Dear Parents, Staff and Students
Wednesday June 3 , 2009 Week 6, Term 2
Centenary Celebrations
O
nly a brief input from me this
week as the Newsletter is
rightly dominated by the
events of the Centenary celebrations.
It was a time when the College had the
opportunity to acknowledge the 100
year history of the school and all the
associated stories, traditions and culture.
The response from students past
and present, parents, pastors and
Brothers was overwhelming. It is obvious
to me as a newcomer into this
community that there is a real passion
and pride in this College and the
achievements of its students. Over
20,000 students have had the privilege
of being educated by hundreds of
dedicated teachers and staff over the
100 years.
A number of staff, parents and old
boys were directly involved in the planning
and organisation of events and all
staff participated in at least one major
aspect of the weekend. I will not single
out individuals in this Newsletter as I
have done this privately, yet I am sure
you would like me to acknowledge
their generosity and support of everything
that happened. It is obvious that
celebrations of this scale and nature
take many hours of work. It is this sort
of dedication and commitment that
makes this College such a great place
for your sons.
Thank you also to the students. I could
not have asked for better ambassadors.
It is clear to me from their engagement,
co-operation, presentation
and behaviour that they are very proud
of their College and rightly so. There is
a very positive atmosphere in the College
at the moment as we continue to
work together to move forward.
FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL
Dear parents, students and staff,
Into the second half of Term II; a big couple of weeks for Years
9/10, and 7/8, with Assessments blocks held last week and this.
All students received a letter this morning regarding the arrangements
for Champagnat Day this Friday June 5. If you did
not receive the letter please ask your son to pick up a copy from
the College Office. Two important reminders for Friday:
• Students will wear smart casual clothing, befitting of the
Eucharist/formal celebration of the Champagnat Day
Eucharist.
• All students, with the exception of Year 7, will be dismissed
from the venue.
Continuing some reflections from the recent Sydney Morning
Herald article by Damon Young focussed on boys and young
men, Young argues that humility and trust are the final important
benefits that martial arts offer. Confidence can spill over
FROM THE MATHS DEPARTMENT
During our Centenary weekend celebrations, the Mathematics
Department ran a guessing competition. Congratulations
to Alessia Micalizzi whose guess of 297 lollies was closest
to the correct total of 295 and hence receives the jar of lollies.
All students in Years 7 to 10 would have received from their
Mathematics teacher their username and password to enable
them to access the program HOTmaths via the internet
(www.HOTmaths.com.au)
HOTmaths is a complete Mathematics Learning System. As
its content is based directly on the NSW Board of Studies
curriculum, it supports what your son is learning in Mathematics
classes at school. It is an internet site, so can be
used anywhere that the internet is available. It is appropriate
for teaching and learning in the classroom or for homework
and study to practice and revise mathematical concepts.
The content of HOTmaths is very comprehensive, having
lesson notes and activities ranging from drill and practice
right through to investigations.
A letter detailing this further was sent home to all parents of
Years 7-10 students, on 20 May 2009.
Ms Mandile, Mathematics Coordinator
into arrogance and all of us need to recognize our vulnerability.
In order to learn well and train well, we need to trust our fellow
students and our teacher(s). Whether it be through martial arts
or some other vehicle, these are positive values and activities
that all young men are nurtured by
and can benefit from. They are also
particularly fitting qualities to reflect
on this week – they are 2 of the qualities
that St Marcellin Champagnat
highlighted as essential to the Marist
way.
With best wishes,
WALK WITH CHRIST! Last year over
8,000 Catholics from across the State joined together
to sing, pray and walk with Christ, in a Procession
of the Blessed Sacrament through the
streets of Sydney. This year on Sunday 14 June,
the Bishops of Sydney will lead the Procession
from St Patrick's Church Hill Wynyard to St Mary's
Cathedral. It's a wonderful opportunity for us all to
publicly profess our faith and share the miracle of
the Eucharist with others. For more information,
Day at MCK on Saturday
Last Thursday evening the A Grade and B
Grade Rugby League teams played Marist North
Shore at WIN Jubilee Stadium in front of a very
large and parochial crowd to continue the College's
Centenary celebrations. The same two
teams played at the SCG to celebrate the College's
75 Year celebrations.
In the earlier game the B-Grade were very impressive
in defeating North Shore 34-6. At the
end of the game ex students of Kogarah that
have gone on to play 1st Grade Rugby League
were presented to the crowd. Special guests
included legendary St George great Johnny
Raper and Sports and Recreation Minister, the
Honourable Mr Kevin Greene. Three current
First Graders, Keith Galloway (Wests Tigers),
Darryl Millard (Canterbury Bulldogs) and Atelea
Yea (Cronulla Sharks) attended the evening and
addressed the A Grade before the match.
In a torrid and bruising encounter the boys
were able to repeat the victory of 1984 by defeating
Marist North Shore 24-8 to remain undefeated
in the MCC Competition after 4 rounds.
Best for Kogarah were Aaron Sowter and Captain,
Andrew Sultana, both scoring two tries.
However they were well supported by Nathan
Green, Aaron Pollard and Tim Murray to name
just a few.
The A Grade had to then back up on the Friday
to play Christian Brothers’ Lewisham in the St
George regional final of the Arrive Alive Cup. In
a courageous effort the boys were again victorious
28-10 and will play Kiama High in the next
round of the competition. Mark Hildebrandt
Last Thursday night at WIN Jubilee Stadium in
what was a very historic event for Kogarah Marist
and Rugby League at the College, the A Grade
put on a performance to be remembered for
years to come.
The team showed discipline, skill and power to
overcome the Marist North Shore team. There
was a lot of hype in the days leading up to the
match and it delivered some great team and individual
performances.
Kogarah commenced the game well showing a
lot of determination and toughness in defence,
skill and power in attack which was evident when
Nathan Green scored a brilliant individual try.
Although Marist North Shore proved to be a very
stubborn outfit, the difference in class began to
show when Andrew Sultana crossed for the first
of two tries for him just on the half time bell.
After the break, Kogarah began where they left
off with some good strong tackles against some
of the North Shore big boys. This defence laid the
platform for players such as Jake Kefford, Dominic
Johnston, Aaron Pollard and Jordan Djoeandy
who made numerous line breaks between them.
Strong running from Kosta Cotsonis, Aaron Sowter
and Viliami Haunga showed strength with
Aaron Sowter crossing for two tries during the
second half. Peter-James Garcia also had a solid
game as he looked safe at the back and dangerous
whilst in attack, as did Jared McCarthy.
A special mention also to Assem Ewais, Joshua
Franco and Trent Sacilotto who played well after
playing in the previous game for B Grade. The
supporters must also be commended as they
provided a good atmosphere and acted as a 14th
man throughout the game inspiring the team with
great support.
Thank you to all involved for making it such a
special evening. It was an occasion which will be
remembered by all. Josh Scodeller, Year 12.
