Will God Be in This Place Do You Care
It’s a heart-stopping experience
to feel God’s presence in a
moment. And it’s rare. Like a
dream, by the time we realize
the awesomeness of the
moment, its content has eluded
us.
Jacob our patriarch holds
onto to his dream – of angels
going up and down a ladder to
heaven -- from his moment of
awakening. He erects a
monument to God on the spot.
(It’s the first foundation stone,
tradition understands, for the
Great Temples of Jerusalem
centuries later.) Jacob imprints
this epiphanal moment on his
consciousness. And it affects his
conscience as a developing
leader and father figure.
Our Ohev Shalom
forebears built a monument like
Jacob -- our synagogue. We
continuously decorate it with
remembrances of these
forebears. We beautify its
insides. We plan its activities.
This being said, we feel
uninspired by our synagogue’s
mission – to manifest God’s
presence in our midst, through
prayer, study, and acts of
chesed. We prove that with our
feet. How often do we attend
to the moments that God is
most perceptible in our
synagogue Not very often, I
adduce.
Ask yourself a series of
questions.
1. “When is the last time I came
to a bar or bat mitzvah at
the synagogue as a
congregant, not as an
invitee” Take a step out of
your own life and invest the
community’s celebration
with your joy. Delight in a
child’s thrill at reading from
the Torah for the first time,
after a year of practice.
Honor them by listening to
their divrei torah, and you
will be taught. Bear witness
to the divine light
emanating from parent and
child as they exchange
words on the bimah.
2. “When is the last time I
stepped into the Ohev
library, let alone borrowed a
book” Plunge into a Jewish
book, and you become an
authentic participant – on
par with the great sages of
our tradition -- in the
millennia-old Jewish
dialogue about God, Israel,
the nations, Jewish ritual
and ethics.
3. “When is the last time I gave
my time, not just my money,
to our synagogue” Your
dollars are vital, don’t get me
wrong. Yet you must
uncover God’s presence to
others in a completely
different way -- delivering
challot, reading to
underprivileged youth,
visiting the burgeoning
number of homebound in
our community.
Contributing your insights to
discussion about our ritual
life, to the give and take of
an adult education lecture.
4. “Have I attended Shabbat
Echad, the Taste of Shabbat,
or a recent Synaplex”
Ignore them and it’s your

Library News — Ba'Sifriyah
As the school year draws to a close, I want to
thank the volunteers who helped the library
function this year.
Lisa Gardner, Pattie Saluk, Amy Tashman and
Sheri Whelpley helped keep the library
organized, and read to pre-school through
3rd grade classes. Thanks also to Sue Lipton for helping out
with a project to withdraw books.
Parents, please make sure that all of your children’s
library books are returned by the last day of school. If you
need to find out what your child has checked out, please
Amy Graham, Library Chairwoman
spiritual loss. Ignore them
and you say, “Shabbat at
Ohev Shalom does not
mean anything to me.”
If you answered “yes” to
one, two, or three of these
questions, yasher koach, you
are on your way. If you
answered “yes” to all of them,
there are so many more
moments to infuse with God’s
presence. If you answered
“no” to all the questions, take
a look in the mirror.
God hates our
indifference. No response is
the most dispiriting response
of all, for human beings and
for the Holy One.
God is present at Ohev
Shalom, but is much too
hidden. From each us,
because of each of us, at the
expense of our community’s
spiritual soul and mission.
Friends, I’ve seen one
too many b’nai mitzvah with
scant congregational
attendance. It makes me
embarrassed. I’ve taken one
too many glances at books
lying untouched in the new
books section of our library. It
makes me sad. I’ve watched
one too many cars drive
through the school drop-off
line, instead of into a parking
space. It leaves me feeling
empty, or angry.
Without your presence,
God’s presence is beyond our
reach. Without your caring,
our communal soul, our
nishama, erodes. Without
you, there will be no God in
this place.
Rabbi Mark Robbins

President’s Message: Behaving Jewishly
Dear Friends,
Charley and I are very
fortunate that each year, one
of our manufacturers sends us
on a much needed vacation.
Last year we were in Budapest,
and just a few weeks ago we
were in Brussels and
Amsterdam. Wherever we
travel, we make it a point to do
all of the “Jewish” things that
we can do. Whether that
means just visiting a
synagogue, a Jewish history
museum, or doing business
with a Jewish shop keeper, we
try to do our part to honor our
history.
I think that it might be
easy to take our Judaism for
granted. There are many
museums that have been
erected to mark the atrocities
brought upon us by others.
We all hear our inner voices
repeating the same words
over and over: “never again.”
But how do I make sure that
“never again” holds true I
have often felt that as a Jew
living in Wallingford, PA, my
ability to ensure our safety as
Jews was to financially support
the many national Jewish
organizations whose mission is
Holocaust remembrance. But
as the years pass, and as I visit
so many European
communities that just
disappeared, I realize that the
best way to ensure that “never
again” really means “never
again” is to simply not take my
Judaism for granted.
It is important that we do
things like belong to a
synagogue, bring our children
to Hebrew school, come to the
synagogue on Shabbat and
celebrate the holidays. Our
Ohev Shalom community,
though diverse, is filled with
people who will not take their
Judaism for granted. I am
thankful for a Board of
Directors who constantly strive
to make our synagogue a
better place for our children
and generations to come. I am
thankful to all of our
volunteers who are not
waiting for someone else to do
the task, but happily give of
themselves to work on Ohev’s
behalf. I am thankful for our
Hebrew school parents who
set an example for their
children by making Hebrew
school a priority. I am thankful
to each and every one of you
for supporting Ohev Shalom
and standing together to say
“never again.”
Men’s Club Minute
I hope everyone had an
enjoyable and meaningful
Passover holiday. Other than
the beginning of softball
season, April was a quiet
month for Men’s Club. Our
5 th season playing in the
Main Line Men’s Club Sunday
Morning Softball League
began with a respectable
showing, albeit a loss, against
one of the traditional league
powers, Young Israel. After a
two-week hiatus due to
Passover, the games will
resume again in earnest in
May. The team welcomes
new players Michael Yaros
and Marv Fackenthall. There
is still time to join in the fun
for any Ohev males 18 years
and older who are interested.
Please contact either Ron
myself (610-892-0122 or
Looking ahead to May,
please mark your calendars
for Sunday, May 18. In the
morning Men’s Club will be
hosting the traditional
Mispallelim end of the school
year barbecue. Later that day
the Annual Men’s Club
bowling and dinner meeting
will take place. We will meet
at Sproul Lanes in Broomall
for bowling at 4:45 pm.
Dinner at a local restaurant
(still to be decided) will
follow. More information will
be forthcoming in the
announcements.
AZA makes a comeback at
Ohev Shalom
In March, the Delco AZA
chapter of BBYO had its first
party of the year. Seven 8th
grade boys, six from the Ohev
area and one from Ner Tamid
in Broomall, attended. They
were joined by Guy Katz, an
11 th grader and head of new
membership for the
Philadelphia Region of AZA.
An amazing amount of food
was eaten, pool was played
and eventually, a consensus
was reached on a movie to
watch.
The next event will be a
joint one with the Delco BBG
(the girls) chapter. We have
already begun discussing
plans for a flag football team in
the fall.
Membership in the AZA
chapter is for boys starting in
January of 8 th grade through
12 th grade. Membership is
open to Jewish boys
regardless of synagogue
affiliation. There are
approximately three
conventions each year which
last for an entire weekend.
There are lots of other events
which happen throughout the
year. Some members may
choose to attend every event
possible, while others may
choose to be more selective.
Anyone who is interested in
joining the chapter should
contact me at
roygmarcus@gmail.com. I can
also help girls contact the BBG
chapter about membership.
Tikkun Olam: Repairing the World a Little Bit at a Time
You can change a little bit of
the world for good.
Jerry Rosset died last
month. His daughters and
siblings are in our thoughts
and prayers. One small,
beautiful thing, out of the
many things he did for Ohev
Shalom, was work with Ruth
Kaplan to deliver challot on
Friday afternoons to a few
Ohev Shalom families who
needed a little extra Shabbat
cheer. Ruth ordered them at
the Swarthmore Coop, and
Jerry picked them up and
delivered them.
We’re all working
together to carry on. Is there a
Friday in June through August
when you could deliver all or
some of the challot It takes a
couple of hours, and the time
on Friday is flexible.
Reading Partners: We go
read with kids at Family
Management Center’s afterschool
program, bringing bags
of donated books. The kids
keep all the books they read or
listen to. The time is 3:45—5
p.m. on the following dates:
Thursday, May 15
Thursday, May 29
Tuesday, June 3
Wednesday, June 11
Family Management
Center also always needs
donations of food for healthy
snacks for its after-school
program, especially boxed
juice, milk/Silk that doesn’t
need refrigeration.
Recession and inflation have hit
hardest the poorest families in
our midst. There is real need in
the community around us.
LifeCenter Dinners: We
need help to shop and serve at
dinners at the LifeCenter
two hours on the following
Sunday evenings:
July 6
September 7
November 2
Volunteers need to be at
least twelve. It’s a great project
for parents and teens to do
together. You’ll be paired with
volunteers who know the
ropes. Contact Steve Katz at
stevenmkatz@hotmail.com or
at 610-543-5382.
We also need families to
help with food and school
supply drives next summer and
fall. These are great bar/bat
mitzvah projects, and great
family projects, too. We have
information sheets on how to
do each one.
We hope everyone had a
wonderful Pesach. Thanks to
those of you who attended the
Miriam’s Cup craft. All of the
painted cups turned out so
nicely and we hope they were
well received at the Seder table.
A special thanks to Marianne
for her wonderful reading of
the story of Miriam. I think the
day was enjoyed by all.
The year is winding down,
and we want to remind those
of you who are not members of
Sisterhood, that there is still
time to become a member.
Our next big event is our
annual Donor Dinner on
Sunday, June 22, which is
being hosted by Ruth Goldman
and Doreen Dworkin. It will
include a “tea” luncheon, along
with instruction on how to
make fresh flower
arrangements. This is a
wonderful event but
unfortunately is open to
Sisterhood members only.
Additional information will be
sent out shortly.
We again would also like
to remind everyone who is
interested in donating to Torah
Torah Fund and send it to
Sisterhood. We cannot accept
checks made out to Sisterhood.
Remember that Torah Fund
supports the students and
programs of the Jewish
you to everyone who has
donated so far.
If you are interested
in getting involved with
have any fresh ideas,
please let us know. We
would love to hear from
you.
May 17, 2008
Hannah Herrera will be called
to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah
on May, 17. Hannah is a 7th
Grade honors student at Strath
Haven Middle School.
Hannah’s main interests are
piano, soccer, cooking and
reading. She has taken piano
lessons since age 5, and she
currently plays travel soccer,
which she enjoys very much.
Last year, Hannah and a few
friends organized an antibullying
project at their school.
This, along with raising over
$1,000 last spring for Relay for
Life, are all parts of her mitzvah
project.
Hannah has always
enjoyed her religious
education and plans to
continue it. She has a special
sensitivity to and interest in the
Holocaust, and has enjoyed
this year’s Mispallelim
Study of The Holocaust at Mispallelim
This year, all the classes will
get some educational
component about the
Holocaust. The 7 th graders
began by learning about the
history of anti-Semitism. We
did this so we would all realize
that Hitler’s ideas to pick the
Jews as scapegoats weren’t
original. We learned that
there has been anti-Semitism
for thousands of years in
many countries of the world
at one time or another.
Ever since the beginning
of Judaism, we have been
sent from our homes, expelled
from countries, forbidden to
worship God and, worst of all,
killed. Emperor Theodosius II
of Rome condemned Judaism
and legally set Jews apart. To
further set Jews apart, the
Fourth Lateran Council said, in
1215, that Jews must wear
distinguishing badges. In
1492, Jews were expelled
from Spain. In Venice, Jews
were forced to live in Ghetto
Nuovo, where the idea of the
ghetto originated. In Poland,
over 100,000 Jews were killed
in less then ten years. As the
Czar moved across Poland,
Jews were put into the
greatest ghetto of all, the Pale.
Jewish boys who reached the
age of twelve were drafted
into the army for 25 years.
With the assassination of
Alexander II in 1850 came a
new word, “POGROM.”
Then, we studied about
Germany. We began in 1871,
when Germany was finally
united under a single ruler.
We learned about WWI,
Wilson’s Fourteen Points, and
the Treaty of Versailles. It was
the harshness of the Treaty of
Versailles that gave Germany
the incentive for another
European war. We learned
about Hitler’s rise to power,
given to him by the German
people.
Was the Holocaust
inevitable No, it was the
people who made the wrong
choices. Power was abused.
People’s obedience was blind.
Decision-making was erased.
We must learn to make
the right choices in our lives.
We cannot allow silence for
others less fortunate than we,
or allow silence in the shadow
of a nuclear holocaust.
“The world is too
dangerous to live in. Not
because of the people
who do evil but because
of the people who sit
and let it happen.”
Albert Einstein
Mispallelim and
Congregation Ohev will be
teaching all community
members that would like to
attend about the Holocaust,
how GIs remember, being
part of a Yom ha’Shoah
Service, watching a movie,
and listen and having a
discussion with a wonderful
author. All this will happen
on May 2-4. Please plan to
attend all or part of this
weekend events.
Shalom to all,
No More Fear of the Bimah!
On Sunday, March 30, twelve congregants took
part in a program designed to make them more
comfortable during services. The “Facing Your Fear
of the Bimah” presentations were conducted by
Amy Graham, Jack Zigon, Bev Dickson, Rich
Nutinsky, and Andy Szabo, under the guidance of
Rabbi Robbins. They shared their time, knowledge
and enthusiasm for the rituals of Judaism without
hesitation. With the gentle prodding of Vice
President Frances Sheehan and the support of
President Doris Elofer, as well as the cooperation of
Michael Muderick, Joan Joseph and Steve Smith,
the program ran smoothly and provided a needed
learning session for our congregation.
The success of this program is just another
example of the way in which the various segments
of our community come together for our common
betterment.
When you see the participants using their
new skills during services, you can be assured that
you will be able to gain those same skills in the
future. Thanks to all who participated.
Chester Children’s Chorus: Two Invitations
The Chester Children’s Chorus brought 22 of its
singers to the Martin Luther King, Jr., Day
observance. Now, the chorus invites
Congregation members to come hear all 75
choristers sing at its Spring Concert. There are
two performances, Friday, May 9, and Saturday,
May 10, both at 8 p.m., in Lang Music Building
at Swarthmore College. Admission is free and
children are welcome.
Adult members of Congregation Ohev
Shalom are also warmly invited to share their
love of books by reading with a chorus member
this summer. The reading program for 8– and
9-year-old children is a treasured part of our fiveweek
Summer Learning Program, held from
June 23 through July 24, at Swarthmore
College. Each volunteer is paired with the same
child for several weeks so they can really begin
to know each other. The reading hour is 11
a.m. to noon every Monday, Tuesday and
Wednesday, and on three Thursdays. We ask
that volunteers be willing to attend every
reading day for at least two full weeks to
provide continuity for the children, and that
they be at least 20 years old, as our children
respond best to adult guidance.
More information about the reading
program is available on the “You Can Help!”
page of our website,
www.chesterchildrenschorus.org. Information
is also available from the chorus office,
610-328-8180.
There’s much more information about the
chorus and its activities in the chorus’ spring
newsletter, available at the synagogue in early
April.
Cantor Acker’s Notes on Performance
From program for his recital at Gratz College, February 2, 2007
The nexus of performance and
worship has long fascinated
me. How distinct are the two
from one another Isn’t it true
that the best worship
experiences are those that are
most well prepared—rehearsed
if you will And when
something is well rehearsed,
isn’t it not only well practiced,
but also supported by the
knowledge and intention
(kavanah) commonly
associated with worship
When expertise, artistry,
knowledge and intention
combine authenticity results.
And isn’t it really authenticity
that we all—performers,
audiences, worshippers and
cantors—really seek
What difference there is
between performance and
worship lays mainly in how
great the distance between the
singer/cantor and the persona
he or she plays. We commonly
think, for instance, that while
the personality of the singer
playing Don Giovanni is far
removed from that of the
rogue (of course there may
also be surprisingly numerous
points of commonality), the
cantor is playing himself. But
this is not really so. When a
poet reads her own work she
dons a persona—albeit one
much closer to her own—and
this doesn’t diminish her
authenticity. So, too, does the
cantor assume a persona when
she ascends the bimah. She
transmits, in a highly inflected
musical form, texts that are
many generations old, laden
with metaphor and ambiguity.
No cantor can effectively
convey such a stylized message
by just being her ordinary self,
no matter how “natural” she
may come to feel in her role.
In other words, she performs
the text. Authenticity, then, is
not a function of place or the
degree of artifice that conveys
any particular performance or
worship service. Rather, it is a
function of the singer’s ability
to commit to and fully embody,
seemingly spontaneously, the
message of the text, secular or
sacred.
My point may be best
illustrated by what I have
experienced in preparing
children to lead prayers in
worship services. The values I
stress, whether with my
children’s choir or individual
b’nai mitzvah, are: study,
proficiency, understanding,
intention (or kavanah),
discipline, singularity of
purpose, respect (for place and
others) and the ability to allow
all these above to dissolve
spontaneously through the joy
of making music. Parents
invariably remark that they
have never seen their children
so sincerely involved in prayer.
While I believe this is true, I also
know that my preparation of
the children for a theatrical
production differs in material
only; the values taught are
exactly the same. So aren’t the
children on the bimah really
performing every bit as much
as those on the stage
I believe so. And what this
observation testifies to is the
profound desire we all have—
whether performers, cantors,
audience, or worshippers—to
find and create experiences
that afford opportunity to
achieve an altered state of
mind. What we call this altered
state—no matter how fleeting it
may be—depends on the
context. In synagogue we call
it “prayer;” in the theater and
concert hall we call it
“performance.” In either case,
at its best, we experience
something otherworldly,
something quite mystical—even
Divine. And it is this that keeps
us coming back for more
wherever we find it.
Pups for Peace is a humanitarian,
non-partisan, non-profit
organization dedicated to
reducing death and injury
through the use of explosivedetection
dogs to counter
terrorism.
The idea for Pups for Peace, to train bomb-sniffing dogs for deployment
throughout Israel, was born in early April 2002 in the wake of the Passover
massacre at the Park Hotel in the seaside resort town of Netanya, Israel.
Supporters of the organization do not believe Pups for Peace will stop
terrorism - only that it can and will save innocent lives and reduce injuries.
We facilitate charitable giving by providing this service online or via our
toll-free phone number (1-800-669-8930). We accept checks, major credit
cards, and Israel bonds. All contributions are tax deductible to the extent
allowed by law. Internal Revenue Service Nonprofit Tax Exempt 501(c)(3)
