Qualitative Research Methods (LIN 526P) 3 units<br />

A course on qualitative methods <strong>of</strong> research <strong>in</strong> applied l<strong>in</strong>guistics.<br />

N.B.: On top <strong>of</strong> the basic courses, a student will be advised to take a non-credit prerequisite course Advanced<br />

Academic Writ<strong>in</strong>g if <strong>in</strong>dicators (e.g., essay portion <strong>of</strong> the admissions exam) show that s/he will hardly cope with<br />

the academic writ<strong>in</strong>g demands <strong>of</strong> the regular courses.<br />

The study <strong>of</strong> sentences with<strong>in</strong> the framework <strong>of</strong> a major current syntactic theory. The focus <strong>of</strong> the course will<br />

depend on the theoretical orientation <strong>of</strong> the faculty teach<strong>in</strong>g it.<br />

Advanced Grammar <strong>of</strong> Philipp<strong>in</strong>e Languages (LIN 626P) 3 units<br />

A discussion <strong>of</strong> issues <strong>in</strong> the analysis <strong>of</strong> Philipp<strong>in</strong>e languages.<br />

Advanced Discourse Analysis (LIN 627P) 3 units<br />

High-level analysis <strong>of</strong> language beyond the sentence; the study <strong>of</strong> discourse us<strong>in</strong>g different models <strong>of</strong> analysis.<br />

Contrastive Rhetoric (LIN 628P) 3 units<br />

A study <strong>of</strong> rhetorical patterns <strong>in</strong> the context <strong>of</strong> different languages and cultures.<br />

Semantics and Pragmatics (LIN 629P) 3 units<br />

A study <strong>of</strong> sentential and contextual mean<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Bil<strong>in</strong>gualism and Bil<strong>in</strong>gual Education (LIN 632P) 3 units<br />

A critical exam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> issues <strong>in</strong> bil<strong>in</strong>gualism and bil<strong>in</strong>gual education around the world; preparation <strong>of</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al<br />

A discussion <strong>of</strong> current research on language <strong>in</strong> its social context, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the Philipp<strong>in</strong>e context, divided <strong>in</strong>to<br />

the sociol<strong>in</strong>guistics <strong>of</strong> society (language use and attitudes, language plann<strong>in</strong>g) and the sociol<strong>in</strong>guistics <strong>of</strong><br />

language (ethnography <strong>of</strong> speak<strong>in</strong>g, variation theory).<br />

Sem<strong>in</strong>ar on Research <strong>in</strong> Stylistics (LIN 803P) 3 units<br />

A discussion <strong>of</strong> current research on stylistics and translation, look<strong>in</strong>g at the connection between l<strong>in</strong>guistics<br />

and literary study.<br />

Sem<strong>in</strong>ar on Research <strong>in</strong> Language Teach<strong>in</strong>g (LIN 804P) 3 units<br />

A discussion <strong>of</strong> current research on theories and views <strong>of</strong> language teach<strong>in</strong>g and learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the ESL<br />

classroom, and <strong>of</strong> varied approaches to language teach<strong>in</strong>g as well as packaged pedagogies.<br />
