Reserve Navy Divers<br />

MENTAL DIVING<br />
SUPPORT UNIT (Great<br />
Lakes, IL) focus on supporting<br />
the Navy Experimental<br />
<strong>Diving</strong> Unit<br />
(NEDU Panama City,<br />
Florida). The Reserve<br />
Unit also provides regional<br />
diving support to<br />
Great Lakes, NTC <strong>and</strong><br />
SURGEMAIN Units. The Unit recently<br />
worked with SURGEMAIN Green Bay<br />
providing a diving inspection on the X-<br />
COBIA (WWII Museum submarine)<br />

supporting NAVSEA’s Ships Inspection<br />
Program. The Unit also provides diving<br />
requalification support to other regional<br />
units such as the Center <strong>of</strong> Excellence<br />
EOD detachment <strong>and</strong> the<br />
NSW DET. The reserve<br />
Unit is composed <strong>of</strong> one<br />
EOD Officer, 13 Navy<br />
Divers (NDs), <strong>and</strong> SCU-<br />
BA qualified Sailors.<br />
While serving in these<br />
Navy Reserve Dive Units,<br />
Navy Divers continue to<br />
pursue their civilian interests<br />
as firefighters, diving<br />
medical technicians, police<br />
<strong>of</strong>ficers, commercial<br />
divers, engineers, contractors,<br />
attorneys, engineers,<br />
college students <strong>and</strong> more<br />
while receiving benefits<br />
such as TRICARE, earning<br />
time toward a Reserve<br />
military retirement, promotion,<br />
etc.<br />
CDR Clovis is a community<br />
manager in the Navy<br />
Reserve NAVSEA 00C SUPSALV Unit.<br />
His Navy service spans 28 years <strong>of</strong> both<br />
active <strong>and</strong> reserve duty as an Electricians<br />
Mate <strong>and</strong> Engineering Duty Officer.<br />
MK-28 UBA<br />
Evaluation<br />
NEDU continues evaluation <strong>of</strong> the MK-28 UBA for<br />
progression toward an interim certification. The MK 28<br />
is the commercially available Megalodon closed circuit<br />
rebreather manufactured by Innerspace Corporation, Centralia,<br />
WA. An interim certification is planned for one year<br />
to evaluate reliability, durability, cost, maintenance <strong>and</strong><br />
logistics for possible integration into the fleet. Pictured on<br />
left are the first Navy open-water test dives conducted in<br />
late March <strong>2011</strong> <strong>of</strong>f the coast <strong>of</strong> Panama City, FL. The divers<br />
are Steve Smith, 00C44, BMCM/MDV (ret) <strong>and</strong> ND1<br />
