tralsund - world cultural
heritage with a renewed splendour
Stralsund acquired Luebeck city status in October 1234.
In order to protect the town, which was developing at a
fast pace, building works on a city wall were soon commenced.
The surrounding walls became a permanent fixture of the
city as early as in the 13th Century. At this time extended
commerce to the north, east and west as well as the incorporation
into the Hansa union were initiated. Stralsund
was on its way to becoming one of the most significant
Hanseatic cities. A rapid economical development set in.
Stralsund ships were represented at all important trading
centres. One of the most significant historical events of
the Hansa is inseparably linked with the name Stralsund:
The peace treaty of 24th May 1370 was signed here.
From the 17th Century onwards the Hanseatic city played
an important role in the Swedish military major power system.
Thanks to the provisions of the Peace of Westphalia,
Stralsund finally came under Swedish rule and went on in
1720 to become the centre of power of Swedish Western
Pomerania.
After the city was occupied for a short time by the French
and after Ferdinand von Schill died on 31st May 1809 in
the Fährstraße, the Stralsund Swedish period came to an
end in 1815. The whole of Pomerania fell into the hands of
the Prussians and so Stralsund with it too.

The Prussia period was followed by the dark era of fascism.
The bombing attack on 6th October 1944, which
took the lives of many people, hit the city hard. During
the socialist period which followed, many old buildings
were at risk of falling into disrepair. This danger could be
banished however with the political turning in 1989.
After that a continuous redevelopment was started of
the building structure worth protecting. The efforts of the
Hanseatic city of Stralsund to preserve the medieval city
structure were rewarded as the historical old towns of
Stralsund and Wismar were included together in the
UNESCO world heritage list in 2002.
2009 is a reason for the Hanseatic city to celebrate -
after a stately 775 years it is in greatest shape.

Well-fortified walls -
proud churches
The most monumental sacral building of Stralsund is
the gothic St. Mary's Basilica (Basilika St. Marien).
The view from the West tower with its baroque cupola,
which visitors can walk up, stretches on a clear day far
onto the Rügen islands, Hiddensee and Western
Pomerania Lagoon Area.
Impressive features are the enormous Stellwagen Organ,
a special musical treat, and the organ concerts on
the powerful instrument, which the famous Friedrich
Stellwagen from Luebeck had fitted between 1653
and 1659.
Between St. Mary's and the St Nicholai's Church
(Ratskirche St. Nikolai) the "little sister" St. Jakobi is
situated. Heavily destroyed over the centuries, the
church was a great concern of the Hanseatic city until
1990. Since then the church has been restored step
by step.
Art and culture have now made their impact here. The
St Nicholai's Church, with its striking double tower and
connection to the historical city hall, is part of the
unmistakable city panorama. The baroque altar based
on designs by Andreas Schlüter, the astronomical
clock and the famous “Nowgorodfahrer” seating are
some of the most important features in terms of art
history of the church erected in the 13th Century.

The German Sea Life Museum in the Saint
Catherine's Monastery counts as one of the
greatest jewels among the Stralsund Museums
with its exotic aquariums.
Over 300,000 litres of sea water flow through
the viewing tanks, in which the diverse types of
Sea Life can be vividly seen, from the cute
seahorses right through to the shark.
The “Nautineum” on Dänholm also counts as part of
the Sea Life Museum.
In 2008 the “Ozeaneum”, North Germany's biggest
spectacular museum building, opened on Stralsunds
Harbour Island (Hafeninsel).

The just under 40 huge seawater aquariums are a public
attraction, which portray a journey through the under
water world of the Northern seas.
In the ancient St. Catherine Dominican Monastery
(Dominikanerkloster St. Katharinen) the Culture and History
Museum is also located, where an extensive collection
of early regional history and prehistory among other
things found its home. Even the famous gold jewellery of
Hiddensee from the 10th Century can be marvelled at
here.
In the Abbey of St. John by the north city wall, a special
experience awaits visitors. The cloister, the magnificent
rose garden, the baroque library, the chapter house with
precious wall paintings and the “smoking floor” of the
ancient Franciscan monastery (Franziskanerkloster)
bring the past centuries back to life.

Shaped by the water

The Stralsund city harbour has always
attracted tourists and locals with its maritime
offerings. Ferries go several times a
day from the quay to the unspoilt
Hiddensee island.
Crossing over to Altefähr on the island of
Rügen is a shorter, yet amazing experience.
Situated right opposite the Hanseatic
city of Stralsund, the traditional fishing
village boasts a view of the Stralsund silhouette
backdrop
North of Rügendamm, approximately 70 m
away, the new Rügenbrücke bridge sets
the city panorama today.
Whether from sea or land, Stralsund is
seen by visitors from its best side all year
round.
Perhaps the nicest piece of seafaring history
has been situated on the pier in the city
harbour since 2003. “Gorch Fock" once
stood on its rear, and was called
"Towarischtsch" for a while. Now it has got
its old name "Gorch Fock" back.
The windjammer now reminds one of the
splendid time of tall ships.

Sea Life Museum
Experience the sea in the museum
The sea has always fascinated people. The DEUTSCHES
MEERESMUSEUM has set itself the task of enabling this fascination to
be experienced. Alongside the new OZEANEUM, visitors immerse themselves
in totally different worlds of experience at three other museum
locations.
Tropical seas behind monastery walls
The Stralsund MEERESMUSEUM (sea museum) in the ancient
St Catherine's Dominican Monastery has attracted visitors for more than
50 years. Oceanography, marine biology, fishing as well as fauna and
flora of the Baltic Sea are displayed on three showroom levels. Particularly
impressive is the 15 metre long skeleton of a finback, which “floats”
in the ancient church choir. The polar bear, Japanese spider crab,
leatherback turtle & co. are more original preparations or true-to-original
exhibits. The aquariums, most of which are located in the basement
vaults in the MEERESMUSEUM, are swarming with such things as carpet
sharks, cute seahorses and colourful butterfly fish. The public's
favourites are the sea turtles which live in a 350,000 litre aquarium and
can be observed through a large pane of roughly 3m x 8m in size.
You can spend time at the museum bistro “Tartaruga” after going around
- with a view of Germany's largest sea turtle tank.
Feel like an oceanographer
Since1999, you can find the NAUTINEUM on Dänholm in Stralsund, an
exhibition centre for fishing, oceanography, hydrography and sea waterways.
There you will get an overview of Pomeranian inshore fishing
among other things. In the boathouse, with an architecturally unusual
height of 14 m, the museum's “Zeesboot STR 9” is located with fully
extended sails, plus some smaller “Strandboote” (beach boats). On the
open-air exhibition ground with its beautiful trees and children's adventure
playground, there are many impressive exhibits on show, such as
cutters, an original fisherman's shed and the first German underwater
habitat BAH 1. A special highlight is the “Helgoland” underwater laboratory,
which can even be explored inside. But the NAUTINEUM, this
prime seat by the sound, has even more to offer, such as a splendid view
of the unmistakable Stralsund skyline and the new Rügenbrücke.
First to the lighthouse then back through the Darss forest
The NATUREUM is located right by the Darsser Ort lighthouse near
Prerow. This natural history museum in the Western Pomerania Lagoon
Area National Park (Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft) is home to exhibitions
on the natural space of Darsser Ort, on the Baltic Sea coast and
on the animals of the Darss Region. The re-enacted “Darss Forest at
night” scene, with crepuscular animals, situated in the basement vault of
the ancient lighthouse attendant house, is particularly facilitating. Baltic
Sea Aquariums, a beach and sand dune garden and wetland biotope are
also part of the NATUREUM just like the walk-in lighthouse, which
boasts a magnificent panoramic view over land and sea. Plus a touch of
aromatic Baltic Sea air at no extra cost. After you have gone up the tower
it is definitely worth visiting the museum café by the lighthouse, which is
joined to the NATUREUM. You can then head back via the Darsser forest
with an invigorated feeling either on foot, by bike or on horse-drawn
carriage.

OZEANEUM Stralsund
In July 2008 the OZEANEUM opened on Stralsund's harbour
island, a further site of the German Sea Life Museum and Northern
Germany's largest new museum building at the same time.
The extensive aquarium tours with huge tanks in some places portray
a journey through the underwater world of the northern seas.
In the Baltic Sea aquarium the visitor ascends deep into the
Stralsund port basin and experiences the diverse flora and fauna
of the different sea regions. Besides well-known types of fish such
as flounders or cods, the aquariums are also teeming with unusual
animals such as catfish.
In the North Sea aquarium the habitats of the North Sea, the North
Atlantic and the polar sea are on show. A generous tunnel aquarium
is dedicated to Helgoland, the only rock island of Germany.
A tide tank simulates ebb and flow and the breaker tank too
ensures movement. The largest tank in the OZEANEUM shows
life in the open Atlantic. It contains 2.6 million litres of seawater.
With the OZEANEUM Stralsund has the largest Baltic Sea Exhibition
in the whole of Europe. Further exhibitions on the ocean and
on the exploration and use of the seas await you with numerous
original exhibits, such as the legendary “GEO” submersible.
The “Meer für Kinder” (“Sea for children”) arouses the enquiring
mind of younger visitors with its points for fun and games.
Truly breathtaking are the “1:1 - giants of the seas”: Simulations of
whales in their original size float over the entire height of the
ceiling.The largest exhibit is the simulations of a blue whale with a
length of 26 metres.

In the oriental enchantment of “1001 Nacht”, a satisfied visitor is
welcomed into a sauna world of over 2,000 sqm including ten different
saunas and bath houses, the sauna bar “Marrakech” and an

Three theatres that were originally Stralsund's, Greifswald's and
Putbus' own theatres have been working under one name and one
management since they merged to become the Theater Vorpommern
GmbH, with one common goal: to present exciting, ambitious
and entertaining shows in the areas of musical theatre, plays,
ballet and concerts. With around 20 premières every season,
eight philharmonic concerts as well as various chamber and special
concerts and numerous guest performances, the Theater
Vorpommern has something on offer for every age and taste.
Musical theatre exhilarates with productions of the humorous type
such as “The Merry Widow” (Die Lustige Witwe) and presents
famous operas such as "The knight of the Rose" (Der Rosenkavalier)
by Richard Strauss or the comic opera "The Italian Girl in
Algiers" by Gioacchino Rossini. Moreover, the musical theatre
breaks new ground in Western Pomerania with lesser played
works such as “The Fall of the Antichrist” (Der Sturz des Antichrist)
by Viktor Ullmann or “The Consul” (Der Konsul) by Gian Carlo
Menotti.
Classic authors such as William Shakespeare, Heinrich von Kleist
or Anton Tschechow are on the play programme, alongside contemporary
authors such as Yasmina Reza or Thomas Bernhard.
The Western Pomerania Ballet (BallettVorpommern) is also
known for its diverse classic and modern offering. Ballet classics
such as “The Nutcracker” are to be found on the programme beside
premières of contemporary choreographies, e.g. "Goldberg
Variations" / "Le Sacre du Printemps", two ballets by Ralf Dörnen.
The Western Pomerania philharmonic orchestra (Philharmonische
Orchester Vorpommern) has made a name for itself as a
constant guest at national and international music festivals and
has been called on for radio recordings and live broadcasts on several
occasions.
Moreover, the Theater Vorpommern presents a number of festivals
each year: the Baltic Sea Festival (June - August), the
“Tanztendenzen” (Oktober), die Putbus Festival (May) and more.
Plus, the area of child and youth theatre is a significant focus of the
theatre. Since September 2008 the Theater Vorpommern has also
been organising concerts and performances in the Ozeaneum
Stralsund.
Alongside the arty offering, the theatre houses themselves are
worth a visit, e.g. the magnificent Art Nouveau theatre of Stralsund,
which has been restored to its original shine after two and a
half years of reconstruction, or the magical Putbus theatre.

Baltic Sea Festival
The Baltic Sea Festival has been offering ambitious, entertaining and
thrilling theatre in a magical ambiance since 2003. With more than
20,000 visitors every year, the festival has turned into an important cultural
attraction in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, which makes
locals and tourists alike go wild from June until August.
You will experience musical delights in Stralsund. The operas “Zar and
Zimmermann” (Tsar and Carpenter) (2003), “Die Zauberflöte“ (The
Magic Flute ) (2004), “Aida” (2006) and “Hoffmanns Erzählungen” (The
Tales of Hoffmann) (2007) as well as the musical “West Side Story”
(2005) among other things were put on with great success on the
Stralsund harbour open-air stage (Seebühne Stralsund). In 2008 the
most loved melodies of Italy could be heard in “La Bella Musica” on the
unique stage by the Baltic Sea. Also in 2009 visitors will experience
something new: For the first time the Baltic Sea Festival will be presenting
a 'romantic' operetta; “The Land of Smiles” (Das Land des Lächelns)
by Franz Lehár.
The Seebühne Stralsund open-air stage, with more than 800 seats, is in
the direct vicinity of the tall ship "Gorch Fock I", the marina, the Ozeaneum
and the old town and offers unique surroundings with a view of the
Sound.
In addition to the open air offerings, visitors can also indulge in dreamlike
sounds at other special venues in Stralsund. Superb musical theatre
can be experienced, whatever the weather, in the St. Jacob Cultural
Church (Kulturkirche St. Jakobi) and the Stralsund theatre, a jewel of the
Baltic Sea coast, which was re-opened in 2008.
In the Hanseatic city of Greifswald the performances go from first-class,
entertaining ballets of the BallettVorpommern (2003 to 2005) to musical
performances such as “Hair” (2006). Since 2007 the Baltic Sea Festival
in Greifswald has been presenting well-known Shakespeare comedies,
thereby guaranteeing an amusing evening with an excellent backdrop.
Visitors could enjoy “A Midsummer Night's Dream” (2007) and “Twelfth
Night” (2008). In 2009 the third humorous play production in a row of the
English poet is to follow with “The Taming of the Shrew”.
The open-air stage at the Greifswald museum harbour with around 800
seats is situated at the idyllic harbour with a view of the historical old
town.
Families too can experience a lot of things at the Baltic Sea Festival. In

The Hanseatic city of Stralsund, located by the sound between the
mainland and the Baltic Sea island of Rügen, the Strelasund,

Stralsund Sail with Stralsund sailing week
Harbour island
The 60th Stralsund sailing week, a highly traditional gathering
for sailing families, male and female crews and youth leagues,
will attract hundreds of participants from near and afar at the
beginning of June. Since more than half a century those passionate
about sailing have been competing every year for the
first places in the courses “Rund Rügen” and “Rund Hiddensee”
as well as in the triangle courses in the Strelasund.
The maritime navigation days are embedded in the Stralsund
Sail, which arouse curiosity with open ship offers.

Historic old town
Nearly 2 centuries under Swedish rule - that leaves traces
behind. The people of Stralsund still feel closely connected

45th International Strelasund swimming contest
Altefähr and Stralsunder Strandbad swimming area
Germany's best known long-distance swimming contest has
been taking place in the Strelasund in front of Stralsund's gates
since as early as 1925. Around 1000 swimmers rise to the
2.4 km distance challenge from Altefähr in Rügen to Stralsund.
The participants jump into the water come rain or shine and
race each other until Stralsund. As soon as the last swimmer
has reached the goal, there is a proper celebration in the
Strandbad Stralsund swimming area with all sport enthusiasts.

Wallenstein festival
Historic old town
The rumbling of gun and musket fire announces the
Wallenstein festival over the old town walls and beyond, an historic
folk festival with a long tradition. The Hanseatic city delves
into past centuries for one weekend. Each year the people of
Stralsunder now celebrate the successful resistance against
the siege of the imperial forces under the leadership of
Wallenstein in 1628.

7. Long Night of the Open Monument -
a monumental journey through 775 years of
Stralsund history
Historic old town
Probably the culturally most spectacular night in the Hanseatic
city of Stralsund, the “Long Night of the Open Monument”,
invites you to experience things “the other way round” and discover
unusual things and surprises. About 50 cultural stops
such as listed private houses and commercial buildings, museums,
churches, monasteries and courtyards emerge as showplaces
for spectacular events and present the old town “from
the senses” with art and culture, shows, dance, music, plays,
readings, guided tours, installation art and culinary delicacies.

Bridge run and Tour d´ Allée
It is now already the 15th time that hundreds of cycling enthusiasts
have come together to ride over the Deutsche
Alleenstraße from Stralsund to Bergen via the Rügenbrücke
bridge. Way over a thousand runners and walkers seize the
opportunity to conquer the Rügenbrücke by foot and to enjoy
the unique view of Stralsund.
