“HELLO”

NEW LOWA INNOVATIONS
LOWA is committed to providing you not only the best quality but the best
new technology. Our R and D department is continually looking for new ways
to improve fit, and make your outdoor experience safe. A perfect example is
our new VERTEX boot featuring BIOMEX ® Protection technology - winner of
the prestigious Backpacker Editors’ Choice Award for 2004.
Biomex ® Vertex GTX
Did you know that Backpacker reports that 27,000 Americans experience sprained
ankles EVERY DAY Here's a exclusive, new LOWA technology that will keep your
customers from becoming part of that statistic.
Biomex is a unique technology that combines an innovative ankle support system in
lightweight construction. Originally developed in Switzerland to protect snowboarders
and in-line skaters from sprains and breaks, Biomex is now available for hikers exclusively
in LOWA boots.
Biomex is a simple yet revolutionary approach to protecting the ankle. It’s based on the
premise that prevention - in this case, ankle stabilization - equals protection.
Outstanding Ankle Protection
Feature: The articulated plastic cuff is set at an offset axis or angle. It is turned
inward 20-30 degrees rather than at a straight vertical axis. When the knees are
bent, the boot’s uppers follow the angles of the lower leg.
Benefit: Less opposing force on the lower leg is created, thus protecting the ankle
by preventing the twist from occurring and reducing fatigue.
Lightweight Durability
Feature: The plastic heel and articulated cuff are made from a super tough thermoplastic
that is 20% lighter than leather. The upper is made with a combination of
micro fiber and tough abrasion-resistant nylon fabric.
Benefit: Super durable yet light weight, easy to break in.
Gore-Tex ® Lining
Feature: Gore-Tex ® laminate provides waterproofness and breathability.
Benefit: Provides comfort and protection.
Vibram® Trail Run Rubber Outsole
Feature: Low profile rubber outsole with minimal lug design. PU midsole.
Benefit: Lightweight, durable sole and PU midsole provides cushioning and shock
absorption.
SPS System
LOWA's new SPS (Supination-Pronation Support) is a
new, proprietary midsole technology. By placing supportive
TPU inserts within the softer PU midsole mold, SPS helps
control and prevent the over-pronation and supination that
can occur during walking. This result: A more balanced and
stable stride, for better comfort while hiking.
LOWA HISTORY 101
Why It Matters
Pick up any LOWA boot and take a serious look at it. What you see there is the
culmination of over 80 years of boot building experience from an area of the
world…Germany’s Bavaria…where a good pair of boots has always been essential.
Generations of mountaineers, climbers, and hikers helped LOWA develop the
technical innovations and construction techniques that make our boots special.
Details like our patented Gore-Tex ® lasted lining which makes boots fit better, with
fewer wrinkles. Details like our proprietary AWP design, which makes boots more
supportive and comfortable while preventing over pronation.
We are proud to have our products made in Europe
- Our long-standing relationships with factories assure quality.
- Proximity of factories in Europe assure better quality control and quick action if needed.
- We’re boot makers. We value the European tradition of passing the craft down
from generation to generation.
- We are bound by the European Community’s high standards of environmentally sensitive production.
What do those 80 years of attention to detail mean to the
Average Joe This (G.I.) Joe has a very real-world answer:
I first heard about your Tanark boots in a Men's Fitness article. I
bought them because, as a United States Marine, I spend a large
portion of my time on my feet and outdoors…, my unit, 1st Recon
Battalion of the 1st Marine Division, spent the months leading up to
the war going from military base to military base to get in as much
training in diverse climates as possible. I wore my Tanarks from
mountain training in Tahoe, CA, to desert training by Palm Springs,
CA. The Tanarks were on my feet from our departure from Kuwait on
the 1st night of the war to the end of the post-war peace keeping
effort. They walked through almost every major city from Al
Nasiriyah, to Al Hay, to Al Kut, to Baghdad, to Ba Gubah, and back
down south to Kuwaiti International Airport. The boots took a
beating, survived a war, and got me home blister free. I would like
to personally thank you for making such a great boot. My Tanarks are
about done now, but I plan to treat myself to a new pair for
Christmas.
C.H., US Marine Corps
LOWA are on the feet of Special Forces units in both Iraq and
Afghanistan. They are worn by our multi-national forces in Bosnia
and even by the Vermont National Guard. Some of these soldiers
even spend THEIR OWN MONEY on LOWAs. Why Because you can’t
get the performance described above when price is the primary
factor in your decision. This is the same, whether you fight in the war
on terrorism or play in the outdoors.
LOWA HISTORY 101
LOWA HISTORY 101

“QUALITY UNDERFOOT”
At LOWA, we don’t skimp on features. We use the best components, technology and take the time
to make the very best boots possible. In fact, over 200 pairs of hands touch each boot during production.
When we say “handmade,” we mean it! (Talk about fussy German quality control!)
Here are just a few examples:
Gore-Tex ® : We have worked in conjunction with W.L. Gore to develop proprietary,
non bootie construction in our footwear. Gore’s “Guaranteed To Keep You Dry”
satisfaction guarantee assures the laminate’s high quality and performance. (see p.7
for more information about Gore-Tex ® )
Vibram ® : Vibram is the leading supplier of performance outdoor footwear. (You
know that little yellow logo on the bottom on your hiking boots…) We work with
Vibram to create proprietary soles that offer specific performance features for
our footwear.
We also develop proprietary components to our own specifications.
The LOWA R & D team is constantly working on new designs and components.
So each year, the product just keeps getting better. Our new SPS sole system
is a recent LOWA innovation.
LOWA uses PU midsoles in ALL of our footwear - some companies don’t!
- PU midsoles offer shock absorption and cushioning. Not using a
cushioned material such as PU in a hiking boot is like a bed without a
box spring. Hard and unforgiving.
- Some boot companies don’t use PU midsoles. They cut corners by
using a less expensive cupped rubber sole - which offers durability but
not comfort.
- Boots with “cup rubber” are heavier and clunkier….making your steps
more tiring and harder on your back. They offer no shock absorption.
They’re used by other competitors because they are cheap!
TPU outsoles: LOWA has developed a new TPU (thermoplastic urethane)
outsole for our multi-sport footwear.
It offers:
- Superior abrasion resistance (3 times better than rubber)
- Outstanding flex performance
- Excellent slip resistance (similar to vulcanized rubber)
- Requires less chemicals for bonding to the midsole
- Recyclable
PU vs EVA
- PU midsoles provide long
lasting cushioning and shock
absorption and help control
excessive foot movement.
- In footwear where the only
goal is light weight, EVA is
best, but it does have limitations.
EVA tends to break down
quickly. In fact it can break
down just sitting in a box in
your closet. Although EVA is
soft and “cushiony,” it has a
tendency to “chunk out” and
tear, and can get easily punctured.
When you see horizontal
striation lines in your EVA midsoles,
the material has lost all
its cushioning ability.
- PU is also a foam, usually
denser, heavier and more
durable than EVA. PU will
stand up longer, and although
it’s a little heavier than EVA,
this is almost made up by the
fact that the base of the rubber
sole can be thinner and contoured.
- PU is more supportive and
cushioned for carrying heavier
loads or for use by heavier
people.
- Environmentally speaking, PU
foam uses less dangerous
solvents, like highly toxic glue,
in the attachment process.
THE LOWA FIT
LOWA has earned a worldwide reputation for superior fit. Our last is one
of the secrets to this - we’ve spent decades compiling data on millions of
different feet. The result is a last design that fits a very broad range of
feet.
The LOWA last is made to the SATRA standard which is a worldwide standard.
It’s not improvised like other brands that use generic lasts in Asian factories.
The LOWA last is typically narrow in the heel and full around the ball of the foot.
- We use pieced leather in our uppers to provide a more precise fit.
- We use different lasts for men and women.
- Our boots generally fit a half size larger than the Brannock size in men’s
and a full size larger in women’s. (This is approximate)
LOWA Offers True Widths!
In addition to our standard medium widths, several of our backpacking, trekking and hiking
boots come in narrow (S), wide (W) and in extra wide (WXL), which has a larger volume in
the toe/ball area.
- Narrow: Banff, Banff Lady, Trekker, Lady Sport
- Wide: Banff, Banff Lady, Trekker
- Extra Wide: Banff, Banff Lady, Hunter (Fall 04), Tibet (Fall 04)
Selected styles in our ATC collection are now available in narrow widths. LOWA is the only
company that offers the multifunctional category of footwear in a true narrow width. This is
achieved by using “Narrow-specific” lasts and midsoles.
- Narrow: Renegade GTX Mid and Lo, Tempest Lo
LOWA Offers Extended Sizes!
We know how hard it is to find larger sizes.
The following boots are available in hard to find men’s size 15’s and 16’s.
- Civetta Extreme
- Trekker
- Renegade GTX Mid and Lo (16’s)
- Tempest II Mid and Lo (16’s)
- Klondike II Mid and Lo
- Windy Lo
- Enduro II GTX
- Sundance Mid and Lo
- Diablo XCR Mid and Lo
- Vento II Lo
In fact, 10.3% of Americans have feet in these
sizes. Do the sizes equal your sales (Look at the
feet of teenagers - they are HUGE!)
THE LOWA FIT
THE LOWA FIT

LOWA HAS A CLUE
Women Specific Features!
Let’s face it - women’s feet are just different than men’s. (But
you knew that already.) LOWA understands that it’s important
to build a women’s boot with true women’s lasts and design
boots with women’s only features.
Women have:
- Narrower heels
- Proportionally wider forefoot.
- Higher arches which can create sensitive areas on the top of the instep
- Lower calves and Achilles tendons
- Less padding than men’s feet
LOWA’s innovative women-specific boots can be summed up by “out-of-the-box
comfort” which is achieved by:
- C4 padded tongue
- Flexible soles for easier walking and hiking
- Female-specific lasts which are narrow in the heel, higher in the arch and wider at the ball
- Comfort cuffs and Comfort spoilers provide softer, contoured padding to accommodate the
back of the Achilles and ankle areas
- Achilles areas are “notched” down to accommodate back of ankle
- Glove leather on tongue (on non-GTX boots) and extra padding for maximum comfort on
the instep
- Specific boots use a soft glove leather in the upper cuff for a comfortable fit about the
ankle area
- LOWA offers narrows and wide width options in the Banff/Trekker and Lady Sport models.
New for ‘04 - Narrow options in Renegades and Tempests. These are uniquely lasted with all
new molded midsoles.
Comfort Cuff and
Comfort spoilers
provide softer, contoured
padding to accommodate
the back of the Achilles
and ankle areas.
LOWA FLEX/SHANK
An important part of a LOWA boot is its “shank” or “insole” system. The shank is critical
to how the boot will flex while you walk as well as to adding torsional stability. Shanks
are “sandwiched” between the outsole and midsole. LOWA uses nylon shanks that vary
in thickness, are tapered and shaped to determine the correct flex for each boot. We
use nylon shanks because they do not conduct heat or cold.
LOWA has also developed a specialized “stabilizer” nylon shank for our light hiking and
multi-purpose footwear.
Flexes (from the stiffest to the softest)
Mtn boots Cristallo GTX Full nylon/rigid
Backpacking boots Banff Full nylon/semi rigid
Trekking Boots Trekker Full nylon/mid range flex
Hiking Tanark Full nylon/mid range flex
ATC Renegade GTX Stabilizer/soft
ATC Trail Scarab New stabilizer/soft
KEEPING IN STEP
Did you know that the average American office worker only takes about 5,000 steps
a day That’s 3,000-5,000 less than they should be taking if they want to keep fit
and not gain those extra lbs. Put a nice new pair of LOWAs and a pair of LEKI poles
(and a pedometer) together and you get “Nordic Walking” - it’s a great new way for
your customers to get out there and MOVE. So don’t laugh at mall walkers.
Consider them potential customers!
LOWA FLEX/SHANK

GORE-TEX LININGS
“Guaranteed to Keep You Dry”
What is Gore-Tex ®
- It is an ultra lightweight microporous Teflon membrane (PTFE) with billions of
microscopic pores per square inch.
- This waterproof membrane has pores that are so tiny that water droplets
cannot get through (waterproof), but water vapor molecules can escape which
makes it breathable. These pores are 700 times greater than the size of a water
vapor molecule. The temperature and pressure gradient between the outside
environment and inside the boot or shoe supports the outward transfer of water
vapor.
- This means that your feet will stay waterproof from outside wetness and that
they will stay dry inside your boot as your sweat vapor passes through the Gore-
Tex ® lining so your feet can breathe. Moisture can escape but water can’t get in.
- See www.gore-tex.com for more information.
LOWA’s Patented “Lasted” Gore-Tex ® Construction
- Gore-Tex ® is attached to LOWA boots with a proprietary “lasted method.” Instead
of using the typical bootie, the laminate is stitched to the upper at the cuff then attached to the insole and the
bottom is sealed with Gore-Tex ® tape to provide a waterproof “gasket” to the insole of the boot.
- The advantage of this construction allows for a smooth and seamless Gore-Tex ® lining
which reduces the likelihood of “hot spots” while spot gluing provides maximum breathability of the laminate.
- Wet feet and wrinkles in boot liners cause blisters. Hikers with blisters see fewer sunsets, smell less
wildflowers and have a generally miserable time in the outdoors. Then they become bowlers.
Different Types
- Gore-Tex ® Footwear Lining: A two-layer lining material is laminated to the Gore-Tex ®
membrane. The inner material is sweat transmitting and repels water. The Hydrofil nylon backing
attracts moisture and passes it on to other layers. LOWA uses this lining in our
Backpacking, Trekking, Hiking and ATC boots.
- Gore-Tex® XCR Lining: XCR is also a laminate with three layers of material, however it
is designed for a different construction and end use of footwear. In addition to being waterproof,
it has a high degree of breathability. It provides climate controlled comfort in warmer
ambient temperatures and during increased physical activity. It is ideal for aerobic activities like
fast-packing, running, Nordic walking and for use in casual shoes. LOWA uses XCR in specific
ATC and outdoor cross-training footwear. XCR also works great in casual shoes when you
need protection from snow and slush combined with indoor comfort and added breathability.
Gore-Tex ® Lab testing
Just like LOWA, W.L.Gore is obsessive about quality. Extensive testing in the lab
and in the footwear factories assures no-fail performance. Factories are chosen
and certified by Gore based on their ability to manufacture a product that
meets their high standards. Footwear is regularly tested with Gore “flexing”
and centrifuge machines, which mimic the stresses of in-field use.
KEEPING THE UPPER HAND
A Guide to Upper Materials
Full Grain Leather
This is the outer “skin” of the hide. Its thickness makes it very durable, and it can
look smooth or textured.
Reverse Full Grain
This is the same as full grain, but the hide has been reversed. The texture of the reverse
makes it very durable and is more likely to withstand cuts and over all abrasion.
-Cristallo and Montafon GTX are examples of boots that use reverse full grain leather.
Split Leather
This leather can be either the reverse side of hide, or when the leather is split, the
inner more textured side is called the split or suede. Splits in comparison to full grains
are thinner, as the hide has been cut in order to make it softer and easier to work
with. Splits, like reverses, hold up very well to abrasion because of their rough texture.
They are sometimes used for heel and toe bumpers. Split leather can be oiled or
waxed or left plain based for the desired look.
- Tigre, and other ATC boots (like Tempests for example) use a combination of nubuck
and splits.
Nubuck Leather
This is a full grain leather that has been lightly sanded for a softer finish, or to reduce
irregularities in the leather. It gives it a suede-like look. Nubuck can be oiled or waxed
or left plain, depending on the desired look.
-Tibet, Tanark, Banff, Trekker and Renegade GTX are examples of boots that use
nubuck leather
Micro-Suede
It is synthetic leather that is used in LOWA’s new CXT collection. Micro-suede is up to
1/3 lighter in weight than most leathers, and has high tear and water resistance. It is
treated with a Teflon spray which helps with water resistance.
-Dragonfly XCR, Scarab, Mosquito are examples of shoes that use micro-suede.
Textile
Cordura or a similar coarse weave textile is used generally with split leathers. The textiles
are nylon or a nylon/polyester combination. They are lightweight, abrasion resistant
and have an excellent flex.
-Baleno GTX and Klondike GTX are examples of boots that use a combination of textile
and split leather uppers.
UPPERS
LOWA UPPERS

CONSTRUCTION PROCESS
Cutting
- LOWA leather cutters are the most experienced workers in the factory.
- Metal die cuts of the boot pieces are laid out on flat sheets of
leather hides and cut.
- Some boots require as many as 25-30 individual pieces of leather
and die cut components.
Stitching
- Each upper is stitched by hand, with up to 75 steps.
- High stress areas are double stitched
- New synthetic, non wicking thread is used in all stitching.
- When the boot begins to take shape, string laces are used
to hold it together.
- All stitching is done in factories throughout Germany,
Poland, Croatia, Slovakia and Italy.
Lasting
- The upper is precisely laced for lasting.
- The insole or shank is tacked to the boot.
- The uppers go through the vapor channel where they are conditioned
with steam and heat for lasting to make them pliable and to
prevent tearing.
- The upper is then stretched over the last and the fore-foot is glued
to the insole.
- Next, the heel is stretched over the last and nailed to the insole.
CONSTRUCTION PROCESS
CONSTRUCTION
13

Randing
- Hand wrapping rands is a costly process that can only be done by hand.
- The boot is prepared by sanding the bottom side walls, then applying
the adhesive and wrapping the rubber rand by hand. Finally, a
special machine presses the rubber rand to the boot upper.
Attaching The Midsole/Outsole to the Upper
-Cemented: The midsole and upper are glued together and then
cemented with adhesive to the upper. Cemented outsoles can be
re-soled by a cobbler.
-Direct Injection: The upper is placed in a machine where liquid
PU is molded to the upper. The rubber outsole is placed on the
mold bottom. Direct injection sole packages cannot be resoled.
KEEPIN’ IT CLEAN
LOWA cares about “clean and green” production methods.
LOWA must adhere to strict EU “green” production regulations.
- German factory is ISO certified.
- Air and water waste is monitored and disposed of according to EU safety standards
The cows that drink from the stream 20 feet from our factory’s back door will attest
to LOWA’s European standards of cleanliness.
BETTER BOOT FITTING
Or, How to Have Really Happy Customers
The ultimate result in perfect boot fitting is to increase customer satisfaction, to make
you and your shop look professional, and to keep people coming back to your store. It
also is a major contributor in reducing the number of boot returns that you get
because of poor or bad fit.
LOWA is a proud sponsor of the Phil Oren Fit System which instructs retailers how to
correctly fit a boot to a individual foot. If you ever have a chance to attend a FitSystem
Seminar, you should jump at the opportunity. Please see page 26 for FitSystem Foot
Measurement Charts.
A Few Steps to Keep in Mind When Fitting Boots
1. Perform a visual assessment of the foot - is it high or low volume Is it wide or narrow
Is there a deformity like bunions or hammer-toe
2. Measure the foot correctly - Be sure to use a Brannock measuring device. Don’t take your customer’s word
that they know what size they wear!! Measure with the correct sock for the boot’s end use.
3. Check for a snug heel fit and correct width.
4. Does the foot flex in the proper place Does the boot break (or bend) at the ball of the
foot Is the boot comfortable where the cuff meets the shin
5. Is there any in-step pressure Check that the boot is laced properly.
6. Is there enough toe room The customer should be able to comfortably wiggle his or her toes.
7. Decide if the customer needs an after-market footbed.
8. Have the customer wear-test indoors to determine final fit.
THE SELLING PROCESS
Qualifying the Customer
There’s more to making a sale than simply providing product information.
Use these tips to connect with your customer and to provide professional
service and advice.
ASK the customer about his/her needs
Where do they intend to use their boots
What sort of terrain (backcountry, on or off-trail)
Are they really going to trail run or do they a versatile outdoor
shoe that is lightweight and comfortable
How much weight will they be carrying in their backpack or will
they only be using a daypack Or no pack at all
Will it be a wet or dry climate
Will they have time to break in their boots
SUMMARIZE your customer’s needs
i.e. “So you’ll be using your boots on a five-day backpacking trip, on
trail, carrying about 40 lbs in the Sierras and you’ll have a month to
break in your boots.” (Or you could always say “Are you sure you
don’t just want to carry a day pack and check into a motel”)
PROVIDE your customer with useful information about the boots you recommend
- Waterproofing and cleaning
- Break-in time
- Sock selection and after market footbeds
Use the information in this book to help you seal the deal.
CARE AND WHERE TO REPAIR
Drying
- Pull laces and open the tongue. Pull out the footbeds and dry boots at ROOM
TEMPERATURE. Airing out may take 24 hours.
- If very wet, lightly stuff boots with newspaper (this will help in sucking up moisture).
- NEVER dry boots in an oven or by a hot fire.
Cleaning
- Brush dirt off the boot, clean off all dirt on the surface off the boot.
Remove footbeds and clean the inside, removing dirt and sweat residue.
- If boots are really dirty, use saddle soap and rinse wipe thoroughly.
- Pull out the laces and open the tongue.
- Don’t put your boots in the washing machine or dryer (we are not kidding…)!
NOTE: Task Force boots can be polished with a neutral or black cream polish.
Waterproofing
- Treat outside of boot with a water-based waterproofing product that is
appropriate for the boot’s type of leather.
- Please note that WE DO NOT RECOMMEND SILICONE-BASED
WATERPROOFING PRODUCTS.
NOTE: Also be careful about wearing your boots around fertilizers and other
chemicals for your lawn care. These chemicals can tend to break down the
stitching and leather on your boots and this damage is not warrantied.
GLOSSARY
AWP: Asymmetric Walking Position
The ankle section of men's boots is set at a 2 degree outward angle to provide a more balanced
stance, less fatigue and easier overall break-in period.
- A woman's stance is more upright and therefore this angling is not needed.
- The boot has a raised "scree" collar on the inside (keeps out trail debris and cushions the lower leg.)
'C4' Tongue System
Cemented
A patented tongue system that improves overall comfort, flex and ankle control. Anatomically designed
to follow the motion of the foot.
- Asymmetrical padding (thicker towards the outside of the foot)
- Recessed ankle areas (inside slightly higher than the outside)
- Flexible curved insert towards the inside of the foot.
- Soft edging on the upper end.
The type of construction where by the midsole/outsole is attached or “cemented” with glue to the
upper of the boot. This type of construction allows the customer to resole their boots.
Climate Control
This moisture management system keeps feet dry, protecting against blisters and hot spots
- A series of perforations, or holes, inside the boot's cuff lining allows air to enter the boot lining while
walking movement "pumps" heat and moisture back out through the holes.
- Moisture is pulled away from the foot and evaporates while walking
Comfort Cuff (women’s)
Specially developed for women's boots to reduce rubbing and discomfort around the back of the
Achilles and ankle areas
- Contoured soft, expandable cuffs for optimum fit and comfort - helps eliminate pressure points.
Comfort Cuff Spoiler (women’s)
Special women's-only feature on Lady GTX and Arko GTX provides extra comfort around the back of
the Achilles area.
- Special designed tab on back of heel area cradles the Achilles.
- Extremely soft and flexible for optimum comfort.
Cordura fabric
Crampons
Woven nylon or polyester/nylon fabric that is abrasion-resistant and very durable.
Used for climbing ice or traveling on snow
- Metal "teeth" which attach to the bottom of a mountaineering boot.
- Crampons come in two primary styles:
Strap-on attaches by strapping onto the boot. With this crampon style, midsole/outsole does
not need to be completely rigid.
Step-in has special ridges at front toe and back heel areas for attachment. With this crampon
style, midsole/outsole must be semi-rigid.
Direct Inject/Attachment
Refers to the type of attachment where the midsole/outsole of the boot is attached to the upper in a
molded process. The hot PU is in liquid state and is formed in mold and upper is placed on the mold.
GLOSSARY
29

Dri-lex Lining
- Excellent abrasion resistance.
- Woven Hydrofil ® nylon moves moisture away from the foot.
- Helps keep the foot ventilated and dry.
EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate)
Footbed
EVA is a foam that is ultra lightweight and has cushioning properties. Often used in midsoles and heel
wedges.
The material that is sandwiched between the midsole and sole of your foot. Often times it is anatomically
shaped and conforms to the curves of the last. It is made of leather or other synthetic materials.
Full grain leather
Leather that comes from the outer part of the hide, typically fairly thick & durable. Used mostly in
uppers. Holds color well. Could be found on with nubuck or pull-up leather.
Glove leather
Leather is nature's original moisture management and climate regulator.
- Soft leather lining cradles the heel and foot area and conforms to the shape of your foot (like a
leather glove).
- Leather lining, like any "skin," needs to be occasionally cleaned and moisturized.
Gore-Tex ® Footwear Lining
Patented membrane that offers waterproof and breathable comfort in footwear.
- Made of ultra lightweight, micro porous Teflon ® (PTFE).
- Membrane is waterproof, but allows water vapor to be permeable.
- Footwear specific laminate is made of the Gore-Tex ® membrane, open cell foam which allows the
moisture to move through to a Hydrofil ® nylon backing which attracts moisture and passes it to the
outer layers.
- Gore-Tex ® lined boots are identified by the "GTX" symbol after the LOWA boot name.
Gore-Tex XCR Footwear Lining
Provides climate control comfort in warmer temperatures and during increased physical activity.
- New, highly breathable waterproof lining.
- Ideal in wet, warm conditions to keep feet cool and comfortable.
- Gore-Tex ® XCR boots are identified with the "GTX XCR" symbol after the LOWA boot name.
Lasts
The last determines the inner shape of the boot and is the major component in determining the fit.
- LOWA lasts are precisely designed according to years of anatomical data about foot shapes and sizes.
- Lasts are a molded cast of a foot shape. It provides the form or template, which the leather upper is
shaped upon.
- LOWA boots are built on different lasts for men and women, to maximize comfort and fit.
Micro-suede
An ultra lightweight and durable synthetic leather. Has water repellent properties and is used in our
ATC Trail collection of footwear. Dries quickly, high abrasion resistance.
Midsole/Outsole
- Midsole is the portion of the boot between the leather upper and rubber outsole. Midsole is often
made of PU (polyurethane). Provides cushioning and shock absorption, stability and support.
- Outsole is made of rubber, often made by Vibram ® . Outsole lugs provide traction and stability
underfoot.
30
GLOSSARY

Nubuck Leather
Outsole
Pronate
- Used in the upper portion of the boot.
- Full grain leather that has been lightly sanded for a softer, suede-like finish.
- Durable and rugged.
The outermost sole of the shoe, it is generally a rubber or TPU sole unit at the bottom of footwear.
The flattening of the arch when the foot strikes the ground.
- Excessive pronation causes increased stress on the inside/medial aspect of the foot.
PU (polyurethane)
Used most often a midsole material. PU in foam form is “blown” with air to produce a foam, usually
denser, heavier and more durable than EVA. Has excellent cushioning properties.
Rand
- Most often applied to the toe and heel of a boot to protect against bumping and scraping.
- Rubber rands are hand-wrapped and glued on; leather rands are sewn on.
Shank
Supinate
Part of the midsole, it provides the boot with correct torsional rigidity and appropriate flex.
- Nylon shanks are sandwiched between the midsole and outsole.
- Vary in stiffness according to category, boot and gender.
- LOWA uses nylon shanks vs steel because nylon does not conduct cold.
- Placed in the midsole between the heel and ball of the foot.
When the ankle "tips" outward, so you are standing on the outside border of the foot.
- Excessive supination predisposes the ankle to injury because the stabilizing muscles on the outside of
the lower leg are in a stretched position.
Split leather
SPS System
Stabilizer
When leather is split, the inner, more textured side, or suede is exposed.
LOWA proprietary technology in which strategically placed TPU (thermoplastic urethane) inserts are
placed in the PU (polyurethane) midsole. These visible harder TPU inserts create “zones” of support
and literally guide the foot into a proper walking motion.
Plastic stabilizer is used to provide ankle stability and torsional control underfoot.
- Placed between the midsole and outsole, it is designed to flex and support in LOWA light hiking
footwear.
- Proportionate support for all foot sizes.
TPU (Thermoplastic polyurethane)
Vibram
- Polyurethane that can be blown or molded
- Used in several of LOWA’s ATC-Trail shoes.
- Lightweight, harder than rubber – more wear resistant.
Italian company which is one of the most respected manufacturers of outsoles.
WXL
- Expanded toe box.
- Higher and broader in the front of the foot area
