Background on and Changes in the New Translation of the Roman Missal

P
ope John Paul II presented the Church with a gift for the millennium: the third edition of the Missale Romanum (Roman
Missal) since the Second Vatican Council. The Roman Missal is the book that sits on the altar at Mass and contains all the
prayers and a description of the actions that make up the celebration of the Mass, “the source and summit of the entire
Christian Life.” Along with this new missal, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments provided
us with an entirely new instruction on the translation of liturgical texts entitled Liturgiam Authenticam. This instruction, the fruit
of decades of consultation, describes a new way of translating that is more capable of conveying the meaning, beauty, and form of
the ancient Latin prayers. Indeed, the vast majority of the prayers we pray at Mass have been preserved by the Latin Church for
more than a thousand years and help not only to hand on what we believe but also to make clear who we are.
The prayers of the Roman Missal serve an indispensable role in passing on the faith,
for, as the ancient axiom lex orandi, lex credendi reminds us, what we pray is what we
believe. The authentic translation of these prayers, therefore, plays an important role in
the catechetical life of the Church. Thanks to the new Roman Missal and the instruction
Liturgiam Authenticam, the Church in the English-speaking world will receive a
new translation of the Mass, beginning with the First Sunday of Advent of 2011.
How Did a New Translation Come About
The principles of translation by which our present liturgical books were rendered into
English were first articulated in the1968 instruction Comme le prévoit. Although admirable
in its attempts to enthusiastically and creatively render a text into modern forms
of English, the 1968 instruction’s reliance on the subjective judgments of the translator
often ended up with a time-bound translation influenced by the translator’s theological
presuppositions. In the subsequent decades, a new way of translating evolved that
engaged a variety of experts, from Latinists and patrologists to theologians and pastors,
musicians and poets, and specialists in English literature. Such a collaborative model
of translation sought to reach a final product that was at once more precise and more memorable. It was a task as ambitious as the
process to achieve it was complex.
The first agent of liturgical translation is the conference of bishops, which is charged by the Council Fathers with the translation
and approval of liturgical texts. Bishops, however, are not necessarily translators, so experts need to be engaged to accomplish this
work. For this purpose, the Holy See forms mixed commissions at the requests of the conferences of bishops, organizations devoted
exclusively to the development of translations of liturgical texts into a common language. The mixed commission for the
English language is called the International Commission on English in the Liturgy (ICEL) and is made up of the eleven major conferences
of bishops where English is spoken. ICEL’s chairman is Bishop Arthur Roche of Leeds, and the U.S. representative is
Bishop Arthur Serratelli of Paterson. ICEL is located on Connecticut Avenue in Washington, D.C., but it employs specialists from
around the English-speaking world to assist in its work of translating the Latin liturgical books into the sort of English that is spoken
today.
Over the past decade, our conference of bishops, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, has reviewed translations of
the Roman Missal produced by ICEL in several different forms. In November 2009, the bishops approved the last of the twelve
segments of the Roman Missal by the requisite two-thirds vote of all de iure Latin rite members. The Congregation for Divine
Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, essentially the Pope’s Liturgy Office, hold the responsibility of reviewing all translations
of liturgical texts that have been apprThe entire Church in the United States has been blessed with this opportunity to
deepen its understanding of the Sacred Liturgy, and to appreciate its meaning and importance in our lives oved by conferences of
bishops. Cardinal Antonio Cañizares Llovera serves as prefect to that congregation, while two native English speakers—
Archbishop J. Augustine DiNoia, OP, and Reverend Anthony Ward, SM—serve as secretary and undersecretary, respectively. So
important is the task of confirmation of the Roman Missal, that with the advent of the instruction Liturgiam Authenticam, the congregation
undertook the formation of a committee of advice on the question of the translation of English-language liturgical texts.
That committee is chaired by Cardinal George Pell of Sydney and is composed of senior prelates from all around the Englishspeaking
world. On March 25, 2010, the English language edition of the Roman Missal was confirmed (Prot 269/10/LIn), an
event commemorated by a luncheon with the Vox Clara Committee in the presence of the Holy Father.
Starting this week, a series of articles regarding the changes to the Roman Missal will be published in our bulletin in
preparation for the upcoming implementation, as well as to deepen our understanding of the Sacred Liturgy, and to
appreciate its meaning and importance in our lives.

Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and
Blood of Christ — CORPUS CHRISTI
On Sunday, June 26 we celebrate the Solemnity
of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ—
Corpus Christi. The bi-lingual Mass will be
celebrated at 12:30PM followed by an outdoor
procession to the four altars. At each altar the
Gospel will be read in various languages.
The Feast of Corpus Christi is used as an
opportunity for public Eucharistic processions,
which serve as a sign of our common faith
and adoration. This is also a great
opportunity for us to show our neighbors
our love for the Eucharist.

If you listen carefully to the
conversations around the
Archdiocese, three words
are repeated often: Strategic
Pastoral Plan. This initiative
came from a request of
Cardinal George, through the work of a committee who
extracted information from 8,500 surveys and compared
it with current research findings. The committee determined
that there was a clear need for a Strategic Pastoral
Plan in the Archdiocese because: the majority of Catholics
feel at least somewhat ill equipped to share knowledge
of the Catholic faith with the next generation, the
majority of Catholics do not attend Mass regularly,
Catholics have mixed pride in the Catholic Church,
large numbers of Catholics do not adequately understand
the meaning and value of the sacraments, and
most Catholics who leave the practice of their faith do
so by age 24. These basic needs led the steering committee
to create a plan that would focus on evangelization,
formation and parish vitality and would be implemented
at the parish level over the next 4 years. The overarching
objective is to deepen the engagement of most Catholics
with their faith and the Church.

P. Wypych and Rev. Alberto
Rojas as new auxiliary bishops
for the Archdiocese.
Francis Cardinal George, OMI,
Archbishop of Chicago, announced
the appointment of Fr.
Wypych and Fr. Rojas as new
bishop-designates.
When Fr. Wypych and Fr. Rojas
are ordained as bishops, they will enter the ranks of those who are
successors of the apostles in the Church. At their ordination,
which will be scheduled for later this summer, they will receive
the office of teaching, governing and sanctifying as a
bishop. They will exercise their ministry in union with the Pope
and their fellow bishops throughout the world. Bishop-designates
Wypych and Rojas will hold the title of auxiliary bishop, meaning
they will assist Cardinal George in
the pastoral administration of the
Archdiocese of Chicago.
Fr. Wypych, pastor of St. Francis
Borgia Parish in Chicago, will
serve as Cardinal George’s vicar
for Vicariate V of the Archdiocese
and as liaison to Polish Catholics;
Fr. Rojas, pastor of Good Shepherd
Bp. Alberto Rojas Parish in Chiago, will serve as the
Cardinal’s vicar for Vicariate III of
the Archdiocese and as liaison to Hispanic Catholics. Bishop-elect
Wypych, 55, was ordained as a priest of the Archdiocese of Krakow
in Poland in 1979. He came to Chicago in 1983 and was incardinated
in this Archdiocese several years later. Prior to becoming
pastor of St. Francis Borgia Parish in 2002, Fr. Wypych served
in a number of parishes in the Archdiocese, including Five Holy
Martyrs, St. Giles, St. Ladislaus and St. Pancratius.
Bishop-elect Rojas, 46, studied for the priesthood in his native
city, Aguascalientes, Mexico, and in the Archdiocese of Chicago,
where he was ordained a priest in 1997. Fr. Rojas served at St.
Gregory the Great and St. Ita prior to being named pastor of Good
Shepherd Parish in 2010. Both priests have served as pastors and
associate pastors. Bishop-elect Wypych has also served as a Dean,
and Bishop-elect Rojas was a member of the seminary formation
faculty at University of Saint Mary of the Lake / Mundelein Seminary.

pierwszym prawdziwym autorytetem. W oparciu o relacje z
nim uczymy się świata wymagającego ale także
zachęcającego i nagradzającego wysiłek. Dzień Ojca
pozostaje w cieniu hucznie obchodzonego Dnia Matki, tak
jak często bywa z samymi ojcami.
Małe dzieci mówiące w superlatywach o swoich rodzicach
najczęściej wykrzykują "moja mamusia jest najpiękniejsza",
"mój tatuś jest najsilniejszy", nieświadomie wskazując na
różnicę w postrzeganiu obojga rodziców. Ojciec przez
wieki patriarchalnej rodziny był ostoją w chwilach kryzysu,
ostatnią instancją w konfliktach, sędzią a czasami nawet
udzielnym władcą.
Modelowa rodzina wyglądała tak: matka daje nam ciepło,
bezwarunkową miłość i bezgraniczne oddanie; ojciec uczy
tego, byśmy nie nadużywali dobroci i nie szargali miłości
matki. Uczy też bardzo wielu innych rzeczy, bo taka
właśnie jest jego rola w stosunku do dziecka - uczyć,
wychowywać i zapewniać bezpieczeństwo.
Ojciec niezbędny
Na ważność ojca i konieczność jego pełnej obecności w
rodzinie coraz częściej zwracają uwagę psychologowie,
podkreślając że to właśnie ojciec jest dla dziecka
"przedstawicielem społeczeństwa, reprezentantem
pozarodzinnych autorytetów" i że przez to uczy dziecko
funkcjonowania w społeczeństwie i przestrzegania jego
reguł. A to dopiero początek ogromnego wpływu ojcostwa.
Coraz częściej dostrzega się, że brak lub niewłaściwy model
ojca trwale zaburza umiejętności przystosowania się do
warunków życia społecznego. Brak matki może upośledzać
relacje uczuciowe, brak ojca - relacje z ludźmi cenionymi,
stosunek do autorytetów i poszanowanie dla prawa.
Specjaliści ukazują też różnicę między zaspokajającą
podstawową potrzebę akceptacji bezwarunkową miłością
macierzyńską a stymulującą rozwój intelektualny,
umysłowy i osobowościowy warunkową miłością ojca, na
którą przynajmniej w pewnym zakresie dziecko musi "sobie
zapracować".
Pamiętajmy więc nie tylko o ich święcie, które często
przeoczamy, ale też o tym że dzieci - zarówno te malutkie
jak i te całkiem już spore - potrzebują taty na co dzień.

NOMINACJA DWÓCH NOWYCH BISKUPÓW POMOCNICZYCH
DLA ARCHIDIECEZJI CHICAGOWSKIEJ
W poniedziałek, 13 czerwca, 2011 papiez Benedykt XVI mianował dwóch
biskupów pomocniczych dla Archidecezji chicagowskiej, ks. Andrzeja P.
Wypycha, proboszcza parafii St. Francis Borgia w Chicago oraz ks. Alberto
Rojas, proboszcza parafii Good Shepherd w Chicago.
Ks. Andrzej Piotr Wypych urodził się 5 grudnia 1954 roku w Kazimierzy
Wielkiej. Przygotowywał się do kapłaństwa w Wyższym Seminarium
Duchownym archidiecezji krakowskiej, gdzie uzyskał magisterium z teologii.
Święcenia kapłańskie przyjął w 1979 r., a następnie pracował duszpastersko
w parafiach świętych Apostołów Szymona i Judy Tadeusza w Kozach (1979-

1981) oraz św. Marcina w Jawiszowicach (1981-1983).
W 1983 przybył do Chicago i w 1989 r. został inkardynowany do tutejszej archidiecezji. Pracował najpierw
jako wikariusz a następnie proboszcz kilku chicagowskich parafii. Ostatnio był proboszczem parafii St. Francis
Borgia Catholic Church przy 8033 W Addison Street w Chicago. Od 2009 r jest dziekanem dekanatu IV-D.
Nowy biskup-elekt Andrzej Wypych będzie odpowiedzialny za Wikariat V , znajdujacy sie na poludniu oraz
poludniowo-zachodnich przedmiesciach Chicago oraz za polskich katolików mieszkajacych na terenie
archidiecezji chicagowskiej.
Bp. Alberto Rojas
Biskup-elekt Rojas studiował w seminarium w jego rodzimym mieście
Aguascalientes w Meksyku i w seminarium archidiecezji chicagowskiej,
gdzie otrzymał święcenia kapłańskie w 1997 roku. Pełnil swoją posługę
duszpasterską jako wikariusz oraz proboszcz parafii Good Shepherd.
Biskup-elekt-Rojas był również członkiem komitetu formacji w
Wyższym Seminarium Duchownym w Mundelein. Ksiądz Alberto Rojas,
będzie odpowiedzialny za Wikariat III Archidiecezji, położony w
zachodniej częsci Chicago jak również za latynoamerykańskich
katolików naszej archidiecezji. Obaj wniosą swoje doświadczenie i
poświecenie dla Kościoła i jego ludu w swoim urzędzie biskupim.

Dzisiejsza niedziela to Święto Trójcy Świętej – jedno z najważniejszych
liturgicznych świąt chrześcijańskich, obchodzonych ku czci Trójcy Świętej: Boga Ojca, Syna i Ducha
Świętego. W kościołach zachodnich przypada na niedzielę po Zesłaniu Ducha Świętego, zaś według
tradycji wschodniej obchodzone jest w niedzielę Pięćdziesiątnicy. W Kościele katolickim święto
zaliczane jest do uroczystości liturgicznych i obchodzone jest jako Uroczystość Najświętszej Trójcy,
tzn., że chociaż obchodzone jest w okresie zwykłym przyjmuje pierwszeństwo nad innymi dniami
świątecznymi. Również Kościoły Starokatolickie obchodzą to święto jako Niedzielę Trójcy Świętej w
oktawie Zesłania Ducha Świętego.

ON TRINITY SUNDAY, FATHER’S DAY, AND HANDKERCHIEF VILLANELLES

“Even though it was last Sunday, we billed our final
Holy Name Society meeting of the 2010/2011 year as our Father’s
Day gathering. And since it’s customary for the HNS
President to extend small gifts to attendees in celebration of
various occasions, I stopped at a suburban Target the evening
prior to pick up some dadly gift for the membership. It was a
quick stop, for I had a very specific gift in mind (something I’d
given as a Dad’s Day gift several years ago during my first
Presidential stint): handkerchiefs.
I asked a young clerk where they were, but she didn’t
know what I was talking about. She covered herself well,
though, paging a (more experienced) colleague who came to the
rescue. My dad dried my childhood tears with his hanky. He
wiped smudges from my face with it. He even spit-shined my
shoes with it. It’s funny. Today we celebrate the Holy Trinity--
three persons in one God--but since Jesus taught us to call God
“Abba,” today seems like the quintessential paternal celebration
as well. And for me, anway, the handkerchief in my pocket only
adds to the festivities.

I thought of Pop and couldn’t help but smile.

(and pondered it, I thought, with some malaise).

next walked me to an unadorned display;

but young clerks wouldn’t know this nowadays.
I thought of Pop again and drew a smile,
then bought a pack or two to reconcile
the present with his long-missed caring gaze.

For Children: a pre-Baptism class is required for Baptism of the first
child. Classes are held in English on the first Wednesday of each
month at 7:00PM in the Convent, and in Polish on the last Tuesday of
each month at 7:30PM in the Church. Following registration, the
sacrament of Baptism is celebrated in English on the second Saturday
each month at 6:00PM and on the fourth Sunday of the month at the
12:30PM Mass. The sacrament of Baptism is celebrated in Polish on
the first Saturday of the month at 6:00PM and on the third Sunday of
the month at the 3:00PM Mass. Please call the rectory to register at

For Adults: Classes are taught through the Rite of Christian Initiation
Program (RCIA) on Sunday mornings at 10:00AM. Please call Stan
