Economics Institute for Judges, Week One
The Economics Institute for Judges, Week One, addresses fundamental
issues that often are at the heart of legal disputes. Over a full week of
intensive classroom lectures and discussions, judges are given a solid
grounding in economics, finance and statistics. The practical relevance
of these disciplines is emphasized through the analysis of numerous
cases.

The Mason Judicial Education Program has teamed up with the ABA
Section on Antitrust Law to offer an intensive program on “Antitrust Law
& Economics for Judges” to be held Sunday, October 7 – Wednesday,
October 10, 2012. The curriculum is being designed by a committee
of distinguished practitioners and scholars selected by the Chair of the
Antitrust Section.

The Economics Institute for Judges, Week Two, will build on the
concepts learned during the Economics Institute for Judges, Week
One, providing more in-depth coverage of advanced topics such as
accounting, finance, environmental economics, scientific methodology,
entrepreneurship, and the financial crises and its aftermath.

Eighth Annual meeting of the American
College of Business Court Judges
In October 2005, a group of judges working with complex business cases
founded the American College of Business Court Judges (ACBCJ).
With the assistance of the Law & Economics Center at the George Mason
University School of Law, the ACBCJ develops programs and seminars to
equip business court judges from around the country with the knowledge
and skills necessary to deal efficiently and professionally with the
increasingly complex issues they confront.

SEVENTH Annual Judicial Symposium
on Civil Justice Issues
The civil justice system in the United States is in a constant state of flux.
Changes occur at both the state and federal levels, through both legislative
and judicial actions. At the same time, judges face a constant barrage of
new and innovative legal theories and procedural maneuvers. The goal
of the annual symposium is to provide a platform that gives judges a
systematic review and critique of the most important civil justice issues of
the day.
Topics for the Seventh Annual Symposium on Civil Justice Issues include:

• Third Party Financing of Litigation
• Developments in Employment Litigation
• Medical Liability
• ALI’s New Principles of Aggregate Litigation
• Privacy Enforcement Under State Consumer Protection Acts
• Generic Drug Litigation
• The Evolving Role of State Attorneys General
The program begins with registration, reception and dinner on Sunday,
November 11, runs all day Monday, November 12, and concludes by 3:00
p.m. on Tuesday, November 13. Lodging and all class sessions will be at the
Mason Inn on George Mason University’s main campus in Fairfax, Virginia.

I understand that limited spaces are available for these programs and my registration means that another judge will not be able to
attend. My registration also means that I have definite plans to attend the program. I have made arrangements so that it is very
unlikely that my judicial duties will preclude me from attending.
I understand that I will be reimbursed for reasonable travel expenses up to $500 for the program, plus 50% of the amount exceeding
$500. For those traveling from Alaska and Hawaii, the reimbursement is $1,000, plus 50% of the amount exceeding $1,000.
Reimbursement is made upon successful completion of the program attended. Reasonable travel expenses include coach airfare,
ground transportation, and mileage/parking associated with travel to and from the program. Meals are not included.
I understand that I will be personally responsible for meal expenses other than those associated with group meals held in
conjunction with the program.
I understand that I will be responsible for any expenses associated with spouse/guest travel.
I agree to read the assigned materials prior to class, promptly attend all class and group functions, and participate in classroom
discussions and activities.
I agree to make travel arrangements so that I am present for all sessions, including the opening and closing sessions. In general, my
flights will arrive two hours before the start of the program and leave three hours after the end of the program.
I do not expect to leave the bench during the next three years.
