De peste 100 de ani, monumentul ecvestru al regelui maghiar de
descenden]\ rom‚n\ este locul de `nt‚lnire al clujenilor. Ne
afl\m `n Pia]a Unirii, deslu[ind urmele a peste 2.000 de ani de istorie.
Sub caldar‚m se afl\ vestigiile unei a[ez\ri neolitice, peste care se
suprapun locuin]e [i obiecte romane, din vremea c‚nd Clujul primise de
la `mp\ratul Hadrian numele de „Municipium Aelium Hadrianum Napoca“.
Retragerea aurelian\ a adus dec\derea ora[ului, distrus mai apoi
de migra]iile evului mediu timpuriu.
Clujul avea s\ renasc\, iar `n 1167 era men]ionat pentru prima dat\
`n documente drept „Castrum Clus“. La 1350 `ncepe construc]ia primei
catedrale, de rit romano-catolic, dedicat\ Sf‚ntului Mihai. Dup\ altarul de
24 de metri, lucr\rile au continuat p‚n\ `n 1487. Decora]iunile ini]iale s-au
pierdut, dar o restaurare contemporan\ a pere]ilor a dezv\luit fragmente
ale unor fresce delicate, din secolele XIV-XV. ~n capela de la baza turnului
a supravie]uit o alt\ fresc\ de secol XV, „Golgota“.
Poarta sus]ine `nsemnele heraldice ale regelui Sigismund. Catedrala,
unul dintre cele mai vechi edificii transilvane `n stil gotic, domin\ actuala
Pia]\ a Unirii, odinioar\ „inima“ ora[ului.
O FARMACIE ISTORIC| {I „STRADA ~N OGLIND|“
Pe latura nordic\ a Pie]ei Unirii, la intersec]ia cu bulevardul Regele
Ferdinand, mai poate fi v\zut\ cl\direa care a ad\postit prima farmacie
clujean\. ~nfiin]at\ `n 1572, ea a apar]inut municipalit\]ii p‚n\ `n 1752,
c‚nd a fost `nchiriat\ unui farmacist particular [i a func]ionat p‚n\ `n
1949, inclus\ apoi `n Muzeul Na]ional de Istorie al Transilvaniei.
Cl\direa ad\poste[te acum colec]ia de istorie a farmaciei, obiecte de
uz farmaceutic de pe `ntreg cuprinsul Transilvaniei. Amenajarea a p\strat

Cluj. We are in Unirii Square, following
the trail of over 200 years
of history.
Neolithic ruins lie beneath the
cobblestone. Above them lie Roman
walls and objects from the time
when Emperor Hadrian had
named Cluj “Municipium Aelium
Hadrianum Napoca“. The withdrawal
of Emperor Aurelianus
meant the decay of the city, destroyed
later by migrations during
the early Dark Ages. Cluj was later
reborn and, in 1167, was first mentioned
in documents as “Castrum
Clus.“
The construction of the city’s
first cathedral began in 1350. It
was a Catholic cathedral, dedicated
to Saint Michael. After building
a 24 meter altar, the works
continued until 1487. The initial
decorations disappeared, but a
recent restoration of the walls
unveiled fragments of delicate
paintings, from the 14 th
and 15 th
centuries.
In the chapel of the tower,
another 15 th
century fresco, “Golgotha,“
survived. The gate holds
King Sigismund’s coat of arms.
The cathedral, one of the oldest
Gothic buildings in Transylvania,
towers over Unirii Square, which
used to be the “heart“ of the city.
A HISTORIC DRUGSTORE
AND THE “MIRROR STREET“
On the northern side of Unirii
Square, at the meeting point of
King Ferdinand Boulevard, stands
the building that hosted the first
drugstore in Cluj. Set up in 1572, it
belonged to the city until 1752,
when it was rented out to a private
pharmacist. It was open until
1949 and later it was included in
the Transylvanian National History
Museum.
