Mincu gracefully and skillfully, from 1887 to 1889, remodeled the entire building. Having a distinct splendor and brilliance, the house, which has since been called Vernescu, opened its doors to the famous balls and soirees of high society. After the building again suffered damages during a fire in 1882, its inheritors decided, four years later, to sell it to Guta Vernescu, a lawyer and politician and founder of the Liberal Party. Built in 1906, based on a design by architect Ion Berindei in the style of Louis XVI, the house was erected to serve as the residence of a rich resident of Bucharest, Bazil George Assan, the son of industrialist Gheorghe Assan. BUCURE{TIUL REDESCOPERIT Bucharest Rediscovered 54 Casa Melik ad\poste[te ast\zi Muzeul „Theodor Pallady“ The Melik House today hosts the Theodor Pallady Museum Interior tipic românesc / Traditional Romanian interior CASA MELIK ® ~n alt\ parte a ora[ului, pe Strada Sp\tarului, la nr. 22, se afl\ casa Melik, una dintre cele mai vechi din Bucure[ti. A fost construit\, dup\ unele surse, pe la 1760, `n Mahalaua Armeneasc\ - cuprins\ `ntre Calea Mo[ilor [i Strada Armeneasc\, [i a apar]inut, se pare, unui mare boier, cu rang de sp\tar, de unde îi vine [i numele Str\zii Sp\tarului. La `nceputul secolului al XIX-lea, casa se afla `n proprietatea bogatului negustor Hagi Chevoc (Kevorc) Nazaretoglu, care o las\ apoi fiului s\u, Agop. La 1847, arhitectul Iacob Melik era unul din membrii de frunte ai comunit\]ii armene[ti. S-a c\s\torit cu Ana, fiica lui Agop Nazaretoglu, al\turi de care a tr\it `n casa socrului s\u, cas\ ce avea s\-i poarte numele p‚n\ ast\zi. Participant la evenimentele din vara anului 1848, arhitectul a fost nevoit s\ ia drumul exilului. Iacob Melik a pendulat `ntre Constantinopol [i Paris, re`ntorc‚ndu-se cu familia `n Bucure[ti la 1857. {i-a g\sit casa destul de ruinat\ de unit\]ile militare str\ine ce [i-au avut `n\untru ad\- post vremelnic. A reparat-o chiar `n acel an, p\str‚ndu-i stilul originar [i acolo [i-a tr\it lini[tit restul zilelor. Casa a ren\scut, `n decembrie 1971, ca Muzeul „Theodor Pallady“, `n interior fiind expuse cele mai de seam\ tablouri ale pictorului. Cl\direa, respect‚nd liniile arhitecturii tradi]ionale rom‚ne[ti, cu parterul `n\l]at deasupra pivni]ei, cuprinde o mare sal\ central\, `mp\r]it\ `n dou\ camere, `n jurul c\rora sunt dispuse celelalte `nc\peri. La venerabila ei v‚rst\, Casa Melik `[i `mbie oaspe]ii cu tr\s\turi de o fermec\toare originalitate: cerdacul a[ezat pe col], `nchis cu un geaml‚c, la etajul `nt‚i, o scar\ de lemn interioar\, fa]ade decorate cu pila[tri clasici `n stil doric, corni[\ bogat\, strea[in\ lat\, iar `n interior un tavan de lemn cioplit, decor‚nd sufrageria. ∫ ® Bazil was also a passionate of motoring. In fact, the first motor vehicle to appear in Bucharest, in 1900, which was able to reach the remarkable speed of ... 7 to 8 kilometers per hour, belonged to the Assan family. The truly remarkable building, located in the center of a beautiful garden, has several parlors decorated with paintings and sculptures by famous artists: painter Octav Bancila, Italian sculptor Angello Vannelli. MELIK HOUSE In a different part of the city, at 22 Spatarului Street, stands Casa Melik, one of the oldest houses in Bucharest. It was built, according to some sources, around 1760 in Mahalaua Armeneasca (the Armenian Neighborhood), between Calea Mosilor and Armeneasca Street. It is said the house belonged to an important boyard (a member of a former privileged class in Romania) who had the rank of sword bearer, the apparent namesake of the street, Spatarului (Sword Bearer). At the beginning of the 19 th century, the house was owned by the successful businessman Hagi Chevoc (Kevork) Nazaretoglu, who bequeathed it to his son, Agop. In 1847, architect Iacob Melik was one of the prominent members of the Armenian community. He married Ana, the daughter of Agop Nazaretoglu, and lived with her in the house of his father in law, a house that to this day bears his name. As he participated in the revolution of the summer of 1848, the architect was forced to leave the country in exile. The police even tried to arrest Agop, but Major Locustenu, who had the task of catching him, could not elicit from any Armenian where his house was located. Iacob Melik split his time between Constantinople and Paris, and returned to Bucharest in 1857. After nine years of neglect, Melik found his house quite ruined by the foreign military units that had temporarily lived there. He repaired it that very year, keeping its original style and lived there quietly until the end of his life. The house was brought to life again in December 1971 as the Theodor Pallady Museum, hosting inside its walls the painter’s most important works. The building, which follows the lines of traditional Romanian architecture, with the high-ceilinged ground floor above the basement, includes a big central hall divided into two rooms, with the other rooms built around them. With its respected age, the Melik House lures visitors with its charmingly original features: the enclosed balcony on the corner, an interior wooden staircase, facades decorated with classical Doric columns, a rich cornice, the wide eaves, and inside, a carved wooden ceiling that decorates the living room. ∫
