It all began with Dr. Carl von Linde, who
founded the company and gave his name
to it.
The dawn of the cryogenic era came in 1895
when he invented a process for liquefying
atmospheric air and a variety of gases. As
early as 1932, Linde installed the world’s
first full-scale helium liquefaction system at
Kharkov University in Ukraine. More than
500 plants have since been placed in service
worldwide.
Our Pfungen location near Winterthur, Switzerland,
now employs more than 70 experienced,
committed engineers and technicians who
plan, design and build apparatus for helium
and hydrogen liquefaction as well as refrigeration
systems capable of reaching temperatures
between –193 °C and –271 °C.
But engineering is just one aspect of Linde
Kryotechnik. Our partnership with our customers
is defined not only by future oriented technical
innovations but also by economical and
reliable products and services – all delivered
on time. Through these qualities and the know
how accumulated over many decades, we have
earned a worldwide reputation.

Engineering

In cryogenic technology, just as in other
fields, we grow by meeting challenges.
Every new project represents a new
challenge to us. Besides our off-the-shelf
equipment, which can be adapted to suit
individual needs, specialists at Linde
Kryotechnik also design custom built
equipment for helium and hydrogen
liquefaction as well as refrigeration
systems.
We continually work to improve and optimize
all system components, using the experience
and innovations derived from past projects.
This understanding of quality has earned ISO
9001:2000 certification for our products and
services.
But this by itself is not enough for us. Every
project is assigned its own project manager
along with the project team made up of process
engineers, designers, and electrical engineers
and technicians. And there’s more: As our
customer, you receive detailed periodic reports
from the project manager describing the status
of the project and what steps come next.
At Linde Kryotechnik, quality always reveals
itself as a sum of many positive details viewed
in the light of the user’s individual requirements.

Linde Kryotechnik designs and builds
cryogenic systems for the most varied fields,
from fundamental research and industrial
applications to the cooling of superconductors
and cold neutron sources, fusion
and fission applications, and the liquefaction
of helium and hydrogen.
This broad coverage imposes tough standards
on our engineers, technicians and management,
for these systems are largely based
on our own design and manufacturing know
how. Specially developed key components are
designed for day-in, day-out service under the
most severe conditions. And always in line with

Cryogenic systems are very complex, and only
a few companies anywhere are in a position
to take on the task of designing and building
them. With more than 500 systems in service,
Linde Kryotechnik is the world leader. We are a
reliable partner, extending support that ensures
trouble-free operation over the long term, far
beyond installation and commissioning.

Helium liquefiers
Linde Kryotechnik has decades of experience in
helium liquefaction and offers a variety of standard
and custom built equipment to suit every need
and every application. The systems offered have
capacities from 10 to over 3500 liters per hour and
are thus of interest to universities and institutes,
just as our specialty solutions are to gas producers.
Helium recovery systems
When liquid helium is drawn from an open loop,
it normally cannot be returned to the liquefaction
system without prior treatment. Linde Kryotechnik
offers many single components for helium recovery
as well as complete systems, from collection to
reinjection into the helium liquefaction cycle.
Storage and distribution systems
A detailed knowledge of thermodynamics, working
media and materials of construction enables us to
design distribution systems ranging from simple
transfer lines to complex distribution systems for
specialty gases. We have mastered the storage
of liquefied gases and offer our customers a wide
selection of storage solutions.
Helium refrigerators
A helium refrigeration system is a closed loop
installation in which a constant quantity of helium
circulates continuously. Linde Kryotechnik designs
and builds special helium refrigeration systems
rated at hundreds of watts to well over 20,000 W
(equivalent power at 4.5 K) – there is no upper limit.
For example, Linde Kryotechnik delivered its first
refrigeration system to CERN in Geneva as early
as the 1960s. The company is now responsible for
designing, building and commissioning the giant
refrigeration systems of the Large Hadron Collider
(LHC) project.
Hydrogen liquefiers
Linde Kryotechnik has a long tradition of building
hydrogen liquefaction plants. The hydrogen capacities
of the systems used begin at 150 liters per hour
and range up to over 20,000 liters per hour. But our
years of experience also enable us to respond to
customer needs that go beyond these limits.
Examples of proven key components used in our
systems are aluminum plate heat exchangers and
expansion turbines with gas and oil bearings, all
designed and fabricated in our own production
shops.
Special cryogenic plant engineering
One thing that makes cryogenics especially stimulating
is the continuous exchange and discussion
with our customers about how we can achieve their
objectives, often leading to further questions and
tasks for our engineers, some of which are beyond
the boundaries of our core business, allowing us to
extend and enhance our range in an exciting way
and frequently arrive at completely novel cryogenic
solutions.

operating qualities, and design for reliability.
But we also realize you should always have
a point of contact with Linde Kryotechnik’s
special brand of customer service, whether you
have installed new equipment or upgraded an
existing system.
Service will assist you in all repair and
maintenance activities. No matter where or
when. It goes without saying that you receive
personal consultation and customer support.
If necessary, our service engineers will even
visit your site to ensure that your equipment
is running. Through our remote control access
(using secure, password-protected modem
connections), we also support you in correcting
minor problems and aid you in operating your
system.
Naturally, key replacement parts for all current
systems are always in stock and ready for
delivery. It may cost us more, but it is better for
you.
Our precise engineering is complemented
by our perfect service, which is always
open to our customers‘ suggestions and
