It all began with Dr. Carl von <strong>Linde</strong>, who<br />

founded the company and gave his name<br />

to it.<br />

<strong>The</strong> dawn of the cryogenic era came in 1895<br />

when he invented a process for liquefying<br />

atmospheric air and a variety of gases. As<br />

early as 1932, <strong>Linde</strong> installed the world’s<br />

first full-scale helium liquefaction system at<br />

Kharkov University in Ukraine. More than<br />

500 plants have since been placed in service<br />

worldwide.<br />

<strong>Our</strong> Pfungen location near Winterthur, Switzerland,<br />

now employs more than 70 experienced,<br />

committed engineers and technicians who<br />

plan, design and build apparatus for helium<br />

and hydrogen liquefaction as well as refrigeration<br />

systems capable of reaching temperatures<br />

between –193 °C and –271 °C.<br />

But engineering is just one aspect of <strong>Linde</strong><br />

<strong>Kryotechnik</strong>. <strong>Our</strong> partnership with our customers<br />

is defined not only by future oriented technical<br />

innovations but also by economical and<br />

reliable products and services – all delivered<br />

on time. Through these qualities and the know<br />

how accumulated over many decades, we have<br />

earned a worldwide reputation.<br />

In cryogenic technology, just as in other<br />

Every new project represents a new<br />

challenge to us. Besides our off-the-shelf<br />

equipment, which can be adapted to suit<br />

individual needs, specialists at <strong>Linde</strong><br />

<strong>Kryotechnik</strong> also design custom built<br />

equipment for helium and hydrogen<br />

liquefaction as well as refrigeration<br />

systems.<br />

We continually work to improve and optimize<br />

all system components, using the experience<br />

and innovations derived from past projects.<br />

This understanding of quality has earned ISO<br />

9001:2000 certification for our products and<br />

services.<br />

But this by itself is not enough for us. Every<br />

project is assigned its own project manager<br />

along with the project team made up of process<br />

engineers, designers, and electrical engineers<br />

and technicians. And there’s more: As our<br />

customer, you receive detailed periodic reports<br />

from the project manager describing the status<br />

of the project and what steps come next.<br />

cryogenic systems for the most varied fields,<br />

from fundamental research and industrial<br />

applications to the cooling of superconductors<br />

and cold neutron sources, fusion<br />

and fission applications, and the liquefaction<br />

of helium and hydrogen.<br />

This broad coverage imposes tough standards<br />

Helium liquefiers<br />

<strong>Linde</strong> <strong>Kryotechnik</strong> has decades of experience in<br />

helium liquefaction and offers a variety of standard<br />

and custom built equipment to suit every need<br />

and every application. <strong>The</strong> systems offered have<br />

capacities from 10 to over 3500 liters per hour and<br />

are thus of interest to universities and institutes,<br />

just as our specialty solutions are to gas producers.<br />

Helium recovery systems<br />

When liquid helium is drawn from an open loop,<br />

it normally cannot be returned to the liquefaction<br />

system without prior treatment. <strong>Linde</strong> <strong>Kryotechnik</strong><br />

offers many single components for helium recovery<br />

as well as complete systems, from collection to<br />

reinjection into the helium liquefaction cycle.<br />

Storage and distribution systems<br />

A detailed knowledge of thermodynamics, working<br />

media and materials of construction enables us to<br />

design distribution systems ranging from simple<br />

transfer lines to complex distribution systems for<br />

specialty gases. We have mastered the storage<br />

of liquefied gases and offer our customers a wide<br />

selection of storage solutions.<br />

Helium refrigerators<br />

A helium refrigeration system is a closed loop<br />

installation in which a constant quantity of helium<br />

circulates continuously. <strong>Linde</strong> <strong>Kryotechnik</strong> designs<br />

and builds special helium refrigeration systems<br />

rated at hundreds of watts to well over 20,000 W<br />

(equivalent power at 4.5 K) – there is no upper limit.<br />

For example, <strong>Linde</strong> <strong>Kryotechnik</strong> delivered its first<br />

refrigeration system to CERN in Geneva as early<br />

as the 1960s. <strong>The</strong> company is now responsible for<br />

designing, building and commissioning the giant<br />

refrigeration systems of the Large Hadron Collider<br />

(LHC) project.<br />

Hydrogen liquefiers<br />

<strong>Linde</strong> <strong>Kryotechnik</strong> has a long tradition of building<br />

hydrogen liquefaction plants. <strong>The</strong> hydrogen capacities<br />

of the systems used begin at 150 liters per hour<br />

and range up to over 20,000 liters per hour. But our<br />

years of experience also enable us to respond to<br />

customer needs that go beyond these limits.<br />

Examples of proven key components used in our<br />

systems are aluminum plate heat exchangers and<br />

expansion turbines with gas and oil bearings, all<br />

designed and fabricated in our own production<br />

shops.<br />

Special cryogenic plant engineering<br />

One thing that makes cryogenics especially stimulating<br />

is the continuous exchange and discussion<br />

with our customers about how we can achieve their<br />

objectives, often leading to further questions and<br />

tasks for our engineers, some of which are beyond<br />

the boundaries of our core business, allowing us to<br />

extend and enhance our range in an exciting way<br />

and frequently arrive at completely novel cryogenic<br />

solutions.<br />
