Commentary
They shoulda’ talked to my old dad
It’s only wrong if you get caught.
That’s obviously been the motto of
a lot of people in business and politics
over the past few years.
Of course, it’s always been that way.
But recently, it seems corruption has
been taken to a whole new level.
We’ve had Ken Lay who ran Enron
into the ground and was dumping his
shares in the company while encouraging
his employees to keep buying the
stock and ruined the lives of thousands
of people. Of course he says none of it
was his fault.
We’ve had Dennis Kozlowski of
Tyco who took looting his company for
personal luxeries to the point of being
obscene
And just recently, we’ve had congressman
Randy Cunningham of
California, who sat on a powerful
House subcommittee overseeing military
spending,who has admitted taking
$2.4 million in bribes from two defense
contractors. The two contractors were
awarded more than $200 million in
military contracts while Cunningham
was on the committee.
The really sad part of this is that
Cunningham is a decorated war hero.
He was by all accounts, a person you
would fi gure was trustworthy.
Now, a man who who has been
called the most powerful lobbyist
Washington, D.C. has ever seen, Jack
Abramoff, has made a plea deal with
federal prosecutors.
There has been much speculation
about what he knows and what he will
say about some members of congress.
According to the latest news, some
20 congressmen and senators are
involved in corruption investigations.
There may be as many as 60 implicated
when Abramoff tells all he knows.
It’s amazing how a burst of ‘generosity’
has hit politicians as they ‘donate’
money received from Abramoff to
charities. In fact, they can’t seem to get
rid of it fast enough.
The Kwajalein Hourglass ment of the Army or USAKA. It is published Wednesdays
and Saturdays in accordance with Army Regulation
The Hourglass is named for the insignia of the U.S.
Army 7th Infantry Division, which liberated the island
from the forces of Imperial Japan on Feb. 4, 1944.
The Kwajalein Hourglass is an authorized publication
for military personnel, federal employees,
contractor workers and their families assigned to U.S.
Army Kwajalein Atoll. Contents of the Hourglass are
not necessarily offi cial views of, or endorsed by, the
U.S. Government, Department of Defense, Depart-
I would imagine there are many
heads resting a little uneasy on their
expensive pillows in their expensive
beds in their expensive Washingtonian
homes these nights.
I’ll bet some really high priced
lawyer’s phones have been ringing off
the hook, too.
Of course, the richer you are, the
better your chances of getting off.
Money always talks.
Remember the story of how Jesus
said it was easier for a camel to pass
through the eye of a needle than for
a rich man to enter the kingdom of
heaven? I never quite understood
that. But recently, I think I do.
So what are we to think? What are
our children to think? How can parents
teach children honesty and integrity
when they see corruption in the
highest places and let’s face it, for the
most part, no consequences are being
suffered?
Yeah, we see a few of these crooks
get caught, but we know that mostly,
ordinary people like us who try to live
honest lives and do the right thing
are just making the crooks richer and
sometimes we feel like chumps for being
honest.
A lot of it is our fault. We just say
‘what a shame’ but don’t do anything
about it. Like maybe vote the crooks
out of offi ce for instance. But then, we
may just be trading old crooks for new
ones.
In some countries, governments
are controlled by the guys with the
most guns. In America, government is
controlled by the guys with the most
money.
So, does it pay to be honest? Well, I
guess if you’re storing up treasure here
on Earth as it says in the Bible, then it
doesn’t.
But nothing on Earth is going to
last forever, except, maybe, corruption.
How does that ancient saying
go? Power corrupts. Absolute power
The Kwajalein Hourglass 2
corrupts absolutely.
I’d like to think that most of the
people elected to public offi ce have
good intentions when they start out.
But the way the circles of government
and business work, I also think that it’s
incredibly hard for an honest person in
politics to stay honest. Sadly, a lot of
them don’t.
You know, my dad wasn’t ‘book
smart.’ He was raised during the Great
Depresssion and didn’t have a lot of
opportunity to go to school.
But he was smart in many other
ways.
We weren’t ‘dirt fl oor’ poor, but
wondering what to do with our money
wasn’t much of a problem, if you get
my drift.
My father would do odd jobs for a
wealthy man on the other side of town
and he would take me with him sometimes.
It turned out this man was later
arrested for fraud and sent to prison for
many years.
But I had envied his house, swimming
pool, fancy clothes, shiny new
cars and other things he possessed. I
mentioned my envy to my father.
He told me something I’ve tried to remember
all these years. He said, “Son,
an honest man will have problems
in his life and may not have money.
But an honest man can sleep at night
because at least his problems are honest
problems. And if you always tell the
truth, you won’t have to worry about
remembering which lies you told.”
It’s too bad the congressmen and
senators having trouble sleeping tonight
never had a talk with old dad.
Many U.S. Army Kwajalein Atoll
residents fi nd time to participate
in water related activities. For
those people the rules are a little
different now; USAKA Regulation
385-9 Recreational Water Safety
has been changed and went into
effect Sunday.
According to Mike Moore, USA-
KA Installation Safety manager,
the old regulation was written
in 1995. “The intent was to help
the Kwajalein community and
maintain water safety. The previous
regulation was outdated. The
new regulation is easier to read,
has hyperlinks to regulatory guidance
and provides explanations on
abbreviations, special terms and
defi nitions,” he said.
Kwajalein Range Services employees
can access it through
KARDS under USAKA Policies
and Regulations. Excerpts will be
incorporated into the 2006 Kwajalein
Telephone and Island Directory.
USAKA personnel have access
through the J: Drive
Some changes include:
• Extending the B-boat range
• Clarifying usage of snorkel
vests and personal fl oatation devices
• New Kwajalein Board Sailors
safety rules
• Providing environmental, fi shing,
and archeological information
• Permitting persons 18 and
older to swim alone at their own
risk in the Kwajalein Adult Pool
and Roi-Namur Pool
• Prohibiting feeding of sharks
Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006
by divers
• Requiring two lights per diver for
night dives
• Listing Republic of the Marshall
Islands water taxi vessel safety and
rules of the road information, etc.
Changing the regulation has been
a year-long process. “Within the last
year, recommendations for change
were brought to me from both government
and KRS agencies and private
clubs. Research and coordination
took the greatest amount of time
to complete,” Moore said. “The chal-
lenge is integrating what exists and
what requires change plus contacting
and working with everyone who has
an interest in the regulation. There
are many interested parties affected
by this regulation including USAKA,
KRS, KPD [Kwajalein Police Department],
Small Boat Marina and a host
of private club organizations.”
In order for the regulation to go into
effect, it is processed through the
USAKA Headquarters staff sections.
Now that the new rules are set,
what happens if someone breaks
them? According to the regulation,
“penalties for violating provisions in
this regulation may include a full
range of statutory and administrative
actions for either military or civilian
personnel.”
Moore explained that KPD can issue
citations, the small boat marina
can take action to prevent usage of
vessels and equipment, persons
found driving under the infl uence
while operating watercraft can be
charged and have privileges revoked
and private club memberships can
be temporarily suspended or totally
revoked, etc.
“The main idea is not to break
3
the rules - rather follow and use
them to ensure personal, equipment
and environmental safety,”
Moore said.
Moore described the process
of changing the regulation as a
great opportunity to interact with
people in the Kwajalein and Roi-
Namur communities. “I received
a lot of help from private clubs
and would like to thank David
Seelye from the Kwajalein Board
Sailors; Bill Williamson, Sharon
Hurst, Lisa Shier, Ron Gamble
and Mary Ellen Gibson from the
Kwajalein Scuba Club; Greg Howson
from the Roi-Namur Dolphins
Scuba Club; Simone Smead and
her staff for providing valuable
insight, assistance and historical
knowledge about Kwajalein water
safety; Mike Herrington from KPD
Marine Police; Tim O’Rourke from
Six Sigma for helping to get the
process on track and John Feldman
and the KRS Safety offi ce for
their professional help,” he said.
He recommends that all recreational
water activity participants
review not only the new regulation
but all supporting Standard
Practice Instructions and related
safety documents.
“The majority of folks respect
the environment we live in
and take the time to think about
the real or potential hazards they
might encounter during recreational
water activity. The safe
water activity participants check
their vessels and equipment, plan
for the unexpected, and watch
out for one another to ensure
their safety and the well-being of
others,” Moore added.
Island organizations come together to
showcase safety, what’s fun, healthy
By Elizabeth Davie
Reporter
Hundreds of island residents ‘got in the mix’
Thursday night for the fi rst trade-show style
event put on by Community Activities.
According to Kim Parker, Community Activities
entertainment supervisor, the purpose of
the event was to showcase a few of the
fun things to do on Kwaj. “We wanted
to give people a chance to get up off the
couch and get involved in the community,
become active, maybe fi nd a new
hobby or fi gure out where the Ivey Gym
is located,” she said.
The event featured trade-show style exhibits,
interactive demonstrations, hospital screenings,
free drawings, free classes and information.
Some of the participants included the Kwajalein
Scuba Club, the Bowling Center, the Kwajalein Art
guild, the hospital and the vet clinic.
Residents that attended the event were treated to
some freebees. Community Activities gave away 250
gym towels with the Get in the Mix logo on a fi rstcome,
fi rst-serve basis. Sign up for free classes such
as Tennis 101, Bowling 101 and a woodshop orientation
was offered.
According to Parker, the idea for the event evolved
from a staff brainstorming session. “We didn’t get
an AFE [Armed Forces Entertainment]
band this year and didn’t have a major
centralized party planned, so, we chose
to try something new and really focus on
some of the strengths within our Community
Activities organization including
being active, healthy and involved in
the community. We wanted to create an
event that would help empower people to
achieve their New Year’s resolutions,” she said.
Parker described the event as tremendously successful.
“I’m sure you’ve heard people say “oh, but
there’s nothing to do on Kwaj.” Those people are
wrong, they just need to get in the mix,” Parker
added.

Rebound, A man hoping to make his way back to the
comedy. Roy McCormick (Martin Lawrence) is one of
the most successful coaches in college basketball, but
he’s just as famous for his hair-trigger temper as he is
for molding winning teams. When an outburst of anger
during a game escalates into an embarrassing public
indecent, McCormick loses his job and is banned from
college sports. Looking for a way to rehabilitate his image,
McCormick takes a job coaching the basketball team at
the middle school he used to attend, only to discover his
players are a handful of misfi ts and losers with no skill on
the court. Can McCormick mold the kids into a winning
team — and make himself into a better man along the
way?
Wedding Crashers, Two guys fi nd out the hard way that
sneaking into the wrong party can cause serious problems
in this comedy. Jeremy Klein (Vince Vaughn) and John
Beckwith (Owen Wilson) are a pair of longtime friends
who work for a law fi rm, helping contentious couples
mediate their divorces. Their job has given them a cynical
attitude about marriage, and as a hobby each weekend
the two make a point of crashing weddings reception,
where they load up on free food and booze and try their
luck at seducing the bridesmaids. When William Cleary
(Christopher Walken), the nation’s Secretary of the
Treasury and a possible candidate for the Presidency,
announces his daughter is to wed, the nuptials are billed
as the social event of the year, and Jeremy and John
decide they must attend the reception. However, John
makes the mistake of falling head over heels for Claire
(Rachel McAdams), the bride’s sister, while Jeremy
attracts the attentions of a woman he’d prefer not to be
involved with, and soon their romantic peccadilloes get
them in very hot water.
