ACADEMIC AWARDS EVENING – 2 FEBRUARY
On 2 February the school celebrated the achievement of our top academic learners. This year we
were honoured to have the Vice Chancellor and Principal of the University of Johannesburg,
Professor Ihron Rensburg, as our guest speaker. He spoke about the value of a good education
and in his closing remarks he reminded the learners of how grateful they should be for receiving
just that at our wonderful school.
A special word of thanks to our wonderful school choir. It was an absolute pleasure to listen to their
singing. Their rendition of the ever popular Chiquitita by ABBA was especially appreciated by
everybody present.
GRADE 8 INDUCTION 7 FEBRUARY
Every year, the Grade 8 Induction signifies the completion of the orientation period for the
Grade 8s of that year. At this occasion, we formally invite the group to join our Parktown Family.
This year it was a pleasure to be entertained by the Grade 8s reciting their poems. Not only were
the poems delightfully humorous, but in many cases the underlying message was one that will
surely be remembered by these girls in years to come.
After the information session, parents / guardians were invited to join the staff for refreshments in
Barbet. As always, it was wonderful to meet the parents / guardians of the girls whom we have got
to know over the last couple of weeks. We trust that we will be able to work in partnership in order
to recognise the needs and realise the potential of each and every learner.

HABITS OF THE HEART - ALL STARS Moral Development Programme
On Friday, 20 January, during assembly, the RCL together with Miss Brand and Simba Mhere from
Top Billing, introduced a very exciting initiative to the entire school. The ALL STARS moral
development programme is a two year programme which aims to develop “moral roots” within the
learners at Parktown High School for Girls. As a school we recognise that we have a responsibility
to our learners, to ensure that they leave school not only with a sound knowledge and skills base
from which to enter any career field they choose, but to leave school with a sound moral and
ethical base from which to make wise decisions. This programme focuses on three core moral
values a year. This year the three core values we will be focusing on are Citizenship, Service and
Trustworthiness. Next year we will focus on Accountability,
Respect and Spirituality.
INTERNATIONAL MOZART FESTIVAL
On Friday 2 February Mr Uhlig and Mr Hamner visited the
school as part of the 4th Johannesburg International Mozart
Festival (JIMF). The aim of this visit was to introduce our
learners to the beautiful music of Mozart. Over the years to
come it is the ambition of the Johannesburg International
Mozart Festival to reflect upon Mozart’s genius and ingenuity
and to create a setting that might translate at least some of
Mozart’s truly inspiring characteristics into the twenty-first
century.
Mr Florian Uhlig (Artistic Director of the Mozart Festival),
Miss Cock and Mr Paul Hamner (Composer in Residence of
the Mozart Festival).
FIRST AID
Congratulations to the eight girls in our First Aid Team for completing a level 3 course in First Aid
towards the end of last year. The course revised levels 1 and 2, but also trained the girls to deal
with people in emotional crisis. It taught them how to rescue drowning people, including how to use
a spinal board in the water. Our pregnant teachers can feel a little more secure, as the course
gives training in childbirth too.
Well done to the following who received their certificates:
Payal Ramjee, Alanna James, Shahrain Coovadia, Kerri Thornton, Serena Bearne, Noorunnisha
Khan, Boitumelo Setati and Jasmina Govind.
Jasmina, Serena, Noorunnisha and Boitumelo won a course at the St John's Competition last
year. They completed the Oxygen Administrator’s course at the end of last year. Well done girls!
TRAFFIC CONCERNS AROUND OUR SCHOOL
We are concerned about our pedestrian and vehicle safety in the vicinity of the
school. In addition, our neighbours in all the streets bordering the school are
complaining about drivers’ disregard for them. Their driveways are blocked by parked vehicles
and in other cases they are blocked from entering the stream of traffic as they try to enter or exit
their driveways. We ask our parents / guardians and drivers of transport vehicles to be
considerate and to stop to allow the neighbours to enter the traffic stream or their driveways.
All parents / guardians, drivers and learners are asked to obey traffic rules and road markings.
Learners must take great care when crossing the roads and should do so at pedestrian crossing or
traffic lights where possible. I n all cases they must walk quickly across the intersection using the
shortest route and not diagonally.
PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION
Our first meeting was held on 1 February and was attended by close to a hundred enthusiastic
parents and guardians. We discussed our plans for the year and parents/guardians were given
the opportunity to offer their help on various occasions. Our first event is the school Social on
Friday 17 February. This will be followed by an Action Day on 3 March and then our Cultural Fun
Day on 10 March. If you were not able to be at the meeting, we are holding another meeting on 15
February when you can join the discussions and/or offer your services. At the Social, we require
parents/guardians to be on duty at the school gates, in the bag room, on security, etc. The work is
not complicated and can be undertaken in shifts. The Social is always a very well organised
event, but parental assistance is vital for the evening to be a success.

Support and assistance is needed by the girls and their teachers for and on Cultural Fun Day;
please volunteer your services to your daughter/ward’s register teacher. Again the work is not
complex and can be negotiated, but the event cannot be a success without the help of the parents/
guardians.
The Action Day involves some manual labour around the school grounds and it offers an
opportunity for parents/guardians with or without their daughters / wards to do something practical
to serve the school. Action Day takes place on a Saturday morning and, if you cannot be here for
the entire morning, we welcome your services for just an hour or two.
We encourage you to take the opportunities offered by the PA to help to raise funds for our school.
We certainly don’t expect you to be involved in every event, but if everyone offers just a few hours
per year, it will make a substantial difference to the lives of our children. If you need any further
information, please contact Mrs Bremner at the school.
PARKVIEW RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATON NEWS
“Material - the Movie" is produced and written by Craig Freimond - Parkview resident, Safe
Parkview member and stalwart community activist whose goals in life are to produce the Great
South African Film and to reduce the speed limit in Parkview to 40 km/h.
It's been seven years in the making, and an immense collaboration with Ronnie Apteker
(Producer), Riaad Moosa, and some of the best comedians in the country.
The outcome is a rich, insightful, emotional, funny, warm and beautiful story about a son and his
father, about following your passion, about family, about conflict, and about love. It is loosely
based on Riaad's true story - he is a medical doctor and chose instead to pursue a stand-up
comedy career, a difficult choice in the Muslim community. The movie focuses on the story of
Cassim, who is intended to take over his dad's ailing fabric business in downtown Jo'burg, but he
discovers a talent for stand-up comedy. It causes all sorts of conflict and he has to make some
hard choices. It is a rich tapestry of the Muslim community, of family, of commitment and culture,
layered with the consequences of following a road less travelled. It's also a story of "any-family",
of challenges, and grudges and expectations that are not met.
It is exquisitely filmed, with a moving musical score. It's a feel good, take-a-tissue movie that ends
with a smile. It opens on 17 February at Ster Kinekor (Sandton) and Nu Metro and is PG.
If possible, go within the first two weeks as this is the most important time in the life of a movie on
the big screen!
