USE OF SYSTEMIC ANTIBIOTICS:<br />

Systemic antibiotics are <strong>in</strong>dicated when cl<strong>in</strong>ically sepsis is<br />

suspected and is confirmed by lab aids.<br />

Always identification of m/o is tried.<br />

Keep a weekly/monthly record of your unit’s flora and the most<br />

effective antimicrobial for each organism.<br />

If the systemic signs suggest sepsis, after obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g relevant<br />

samples one may beg<strong>in</strong> an appropriate drug as determ<strong>in</strong>ed by<br />

monthly records.<br />

If response is positive and confirmed by lab tests, cont<strong>in</strong>ue for5<br />

days or for a day or so after signs subside.<br />

If response is positive but not confirmed by lab tests, one may still<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ue antibiotic but for a shorter time.<br />

If response is negative, await results of tests and proceed<br />

accord<strong>in</strong>gly.
