POLYMYXIN B – BACITRACIN (POLYFAX)<br />
This o<strong>in</strong>tment conta<strong>in</strong>s 10,000 units per gram polymyx<strong>in</strong><br />
B and 500 units per gram of bacitrac<strong>in</strong>.<br />
ADVANTAGES:<br />
Pa<strong>in</strong>less application. No systemic absorption.<br />
Wide range of antibacterial effect due to synergistic<br />
effect of two antibacterials.<br />
DISADVANTAGES:<br />
The base of o<strong>in</strong>tment <strong>in</strong> which the antibacterial are<br />
conta<strong>in</strong>ed somewhat <strong>in</strong>hibits their effectiveness aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />
the bacteria present on the surface of the wound.<br />
Polyfax is widely used for treatment of m<strong>in</strong>or and<br />
superficial burns but cannot be relied upon <strong>in</strong> large deep<br />
burns .
