Safe in the
Shepherd’s Arms
by Max Lucado
In today’s world it can be difficult to
feel safe and secure. That’s why in
Safe in the Shepherd’s Arms, Max
Lucado offers a reliable source of
safety and security from the twentythird
Psalm. He describes this psalm
as “written by a shepherd who
became a king--because He wanted
us to know about a King who
became a shepherd.” With Psalm 23
as our guide, we can release our
burdens, throw off our fears, and
rest safely in the shepherd’s arms.
drinks remain outside the Sanctuary. Parents, we want this time of worship to be a meaningful
experience for you. If, during the service, your child needs attention, the Parlor (Room 3319)
is available to you. The room is equipped with comfortable furniture and closed-circuit TV so
you can continue to participate in the worship service while tending to the needs of your child.
Welcome to
Worship! This
past week Apple
unveiled the
latest version of
the iPhone. Now
thousands are left
feeling unsatisfied
with their “old”
iPhone. While
culture teaches us
to keep wanting
what is new and
next, God invites
us to live a life
of contentment.
Today we’ll explore
what that means.
Ye Servants
of God, Your
Master Proclaim
was written by
Charles Wesley
in 1744 during
a year of severe
persecution for
John and Charles
Wesley and their
followers. Based
on Psalm 93:1-4
and Revelation
7:9-12, the text
encourages those
who are suffering
or in trouble to
focus on the One
“whose kingdom
is glorious—who
rules over all.”
Prayer of Confession
Merciful God, as our good shepherd you have promised
to supply our needs from the depth of your riches. In
our moments of weakness you grant us grace that is
sufficient for the struggle. At your right hand there is
fullness of joy and pleasures forevermore. Yet we refuse
to be satisfied. We crave things that cannot last and
expect from them a happiness they cannot give. Forgive
our restless yearnings and teach us contentment. Grant
that we might feast at the abundance of your table and
find our deepest joy in you. Satisfy us even now as we
make our silent confessions…
Sacrament of Baptism
In this spiritual
we see Jesus as
the gate to the
sheepfold, but
also he is the
ever-present
protector from
Psalm 139:
(SO HIGH)
“If I ascend to
heaven, you
are there…
(SO LOW) ...
if I make my
bed in Sheol,
you are there.
(SO WIDE)
If I take the wings
of the morning
and settle at the
farthest limits of
the sea, even
there your hand
shall lead me,
and your right
hand shall hold
me fast.”
This hymn text
reminds us that
to claim Jesus as
our “shepherd” is
to acknowledge
that we belong to
him. Paul stated
this truth plainly:
“For you are not
your own; you
were bought at
a price. Therefore
honor God with
your body”
(1 Cor. 6:20).
