How Is St. Luke’s Providing Value in Health Care 

Better health, better care, lower cost. This is our Triple Aim as we work every day to promote community 

health and keep medical costs down, prevent disease and injury, find health problems early when they 

are most treatable, and help patients with chronic, complex conditions manage their care to achieve 

their best quality of life. 

Health care is amazing: We save lives, mend injuries, cure diseases that were once incurable, conduct 

promising research, and promote healthy lifestyles. But the challenges are immense: People who don’t 

have access to care, can’t afford care, or receive poor care. Families who lose insurance coverage or are 

bankrupted by medical costs. Epidemics of heart disease, diabetes, and obesity, even in children. 

So what are we doing about it Here’s just a sample: 

• We’re focusing on prevention. People are going to get sick, and they’re going to get hurt. But with our 

programs and knowledge today, there is much we can prevent. 

• We’re building a strong network of primary care—a medical home where patients build a real 

relationship with their provider team (see page 15). 

• We’re advocating for a system that rewards providers for quality care, successful outcomes, and 

cost-efficiency—not just for the number of procedures they perform. 

• We’re eliminating waste through the implementation of Lean. For every dollar we spend to reduce 

waste in waiting time and duplication of services, we save three to four dollars in actual or 

avoidable costs. 

• We’re boosting our own employees’ health, setting the example as well as developing and 

demonstrating the ability to improve the health of our communities (see page 3). 

• We’re engaging the community for philanthropic investment. For every dollar donated, we’re 

matching nine. 

The problems with health care are complex and far-reaching. But innovative 

solutions are coming every day from physicians, nurses, and other leaders in the 

field, as well as health care consumers, employers, insurance companies, and 

those who work in Medicare and Medicaid. Together we are improving patient 

care, working to improve community health, and achieving lower costs.

Accountable Care 

At St. Luke’s, accountable care is our standard of practice, and this fall we will apply to become a federally 

recognized Accountable Care Organization (ACO) through participation in the Medicare Shared Savings 

Program. The federal government is looking to willing health systems like ours to take a leadership role in 

providing effective, evidence-based care that truly serves the needs of today’s patients, families, caregivers, 

and communities. From prevention and education to early screening, from cutting-edge treatment to leadingedge 

research, from delivering babies to caring for patients through hospice, everything we do is continuously 

evaluated and redesigned as needed to best serve the people of our region.

Value = Prevention 

$35,000—wow! That’s how much cash Vinny Picard guesses he blew on 

cigarettes over 23 years of smoking. But there’s no price you can put on 

freedom from smoking, and Vinny is not looking back. Today he sleeps better, 

feels great in the morning, and enjoys the taste of food again. And as a 

security officer at St. Luke’s, he’s got the lung power to race up the stairs in an 

emergency—and we’re all grateful for that! 

Vinny quit smoking through St. Luke’s Healthy U, a healthy lifestyle program 

offered to all St. Luke’s employees. The tobacco cessation component includes 

personal coaching and a home DVD series developed by local anti-smoking 

expert Nancy Casperson, who trained in the latest techniques at the Mayo 

Clinic. The program also includes prescription medication if needed, which 

St. Luke’s Pharmacies initially cover for free. 

The program so far has an 80% success rate, and will easily pay for itself in 

lower health care costs and increased productivity. Great job Vinny! And great 

job Healthy U! 

About Healthy U 

• Of 7,881 employees enrolled in our health insurance plan, 94% are 

participating in Healthy U. 

• Employees qualify for lower insurance premiums if they meet goals 

such as healthy blood pressure and blood glucose. 

• Programs include health coaching and counseling, weight management, 

diabetes, healthy pregnancy, smoking cessation, and more. 

• Pre-hypertension, hypertension, pre-diabetes, and diabetes rates all improved by more 

than 10 percent among employees.

Care 

Cy Burr remembers all too well the first time she faced cancer. Sitting alone in 

a cold, sterile chemotherapy room—not even her parents allowed in with her. 

Waiting days for results. No one asking her what she felt, what she needed. 

Feeling like she had no control. And this was at a well-respected medical 

center. But it was 25 years ago, and almost without exception, this was how 

medicine was practiced. 

Fast-forward to 2012. Cy is facing cancer for the third time. But it’s a different 

world. Cy’s doctors and nurses at St. Luke’s Mountain States Tumor Institute 

(MSTI) appreciate her input and encourage her to be an active member of her 

own care team. The chemo suite is a welcoming place: Family and friends can 

be with her, and volunteers ask if she’d like a pillow, a blanket, or something 

to eat. 

Patients and families are at the center of all we do at St. Luke’s. Every 

plan, every process, is designed to meet their needs—physically, mentally, 

emotionally, and spiritually. At St. Luke’s MSTI, this includes not only the 

most advanced, most effective medical treatment but counseling, education, 

nutrition, exercise, and spiritual care. 

Patient-centered care also means listening to patients, understanding what 

they truly need, and providing education and information so they know what 

to expect. Cancer is a tough road to travel; patients and those who love them 

need all the support they can get for the best possible quality of life and chance 

for survival. We know—and studies show—that this comes from caring for the 

whole patient, and listening to their valuable insights on their own health.

Value = Community Health 

St. Luke’s McCall’s commitment to prevention and 

wellness goes back nearly two decades, thanks 

to the vision of a very dedicated doctor, board 

of directors, and CEO at what was then McCall 

Memorial Hospital. Dr. Ed Hershgold, internist 

and psychiatrist, started the program with a 

presentation on heart disease prevention. He spoke 

to an audience of one. 

But Dr. Hershgold and the team in McCall felt 

strongly that the hospital had a responsibility 

to promote physical and mental health in the 

community, so they nurtured the fledgling program, 

carefully pooling resources with organizations 

such as the University of Idaho, Ponderosa State 

Park, and the City of McCall. In 2011, more than 

4,900 people took part in classes, screenings, and 

events that ranged from concussion awareness 

to grief support to tracking Santa Claus on a 

snowshoe trek. 

Today the Center for Health Promotion is an 

important component of the St. Luke’s McCall 

Integrative Medicine Clinic, whose service area 

extends to New Meadows, Donnelly, Council, 

and Riggins. 

“Our goal is to help people live energetic lives and 

avoid illness,” says Dr. Dan Ostermiller, medical 

director of the clinic and center. Dr. Ostermiller, 

a family medicine physician and integrative 

medicine fellow who is board-certified in medical 

acupuncture, says “A healthy lifestyle that includes 

exercise, nutrition, stress reduction, and social 

connections brings better health at a lower cost.” 

And Dr. Hershgold Even though he retired 

and passed the baton to Dr. Ostermiller many 

years ago, he still keeps his hand in. He’s 

currently leading a class called, appropriately, 

“Embracing Aging.”

Taking Health to Heart 

St. Luke’s Wood River’s Heart of the Matter is a community tradition, serving more than 1,000 people 

every spring in Ketchum and Hailey. For only $10, participants receive a health screening that includes 

a blood test for HDL and LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and glucose levels; blood pressure check; and 

prostate (PSA) test for men.

Dedicated to keeping people out of the hospital 

Say what 

It’s true—St. Luke’s wants to keep people out 

of the hospital as much as possible. Patients 

with chronic, complex conditions use the 

greatest amount of health care resources, by far. 

Unfortunately, they often wait to access those 

resources until their condition is critical, so they end 

up in the emergency department or intensive care 

unit—two of the most expensive hospital services 

of all. 

We know we can keep many patients with serious 

conditions—such as heart failure and diabetes— 

out of the hospital, and help them manage their 

conditions for a fraction of the cost, with much 

better outcomes for their health. In our outpatient 

Heart Failure Clinics, for example, patients are 

seen by a cardiologist, nurse practitioner, or 

physician assistant for follow-up care that includes 

a complete evaluation as well as education and 

support for following a low-salt diet, getting regular 

exercise, quitting smoking, managing stress, and 

watching for symptoms. 

At home, heart failure patients can take advantage 

of Telehealth monitoring, which sends vital signs— 

such as blood oxygen, blood pressure, weight, 

temperature, and blood glucose—to a Home 

Care nurse every day. Daily review of Telehealth 

data can catch sudden weight gain, changes in 

blood pressure, or other indicators immediately, 

allowing the primary care physician or cardiologist 

to make treatment adjustments before the patient’s 

condition deteriorates, keeping them safe at home, 

stable, and independent. 

Patients get the team treatment at St. Luke’s Clinic – Eastern Oregon Medical Associates 

(EOMA). With three care teams that include physicians, nurse practitioners, and nurses, 

patients can be sure that someone who knows and cares about them is always available. 

The clinic, located in Baker City, continues to evolve to meet changing patient needs, 

providing evening and weekend hours, and clinic space for visiting specialists in cancer, 

heart disease, and diabetes. This is the model of a “medical home,” and St. Luke’s EOMA 

is in fact becoming one of the first “Patient-Centered Primary Care Homes” certified by the 

state of Oregon. 

This designation certifies a focus on wellness and prevention, efficient and effective care, 

management and support for those with chronic conditions, and a whole-person view of the 

physical and behavioral health care needs of patients and families.

Living Well with Diabetes 

The number of Americans diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 

continues to climb—closely associated with our country’s 

increasing obesity and inactivity. Today, more than 25 

million Americans are living with diabetes, and many of 

them are struggling with poor health and devastating 

medical bills. 

But there is hope for people with diabetes, and loads of 

success stories. At St. Luke’s Humphreys Diabetes Center, 

hope and success are alive and well, from the original 

center in Boise to clinics, community centers, schools, and 

summer camps throughout southern and central Idaho, 

eastern Oregon, and northern Nevada. 

In 2011, the registered nurses, dietitians, and diabetes 

educators at Humphreys provided care, education, 

counseling, and support for more than 4,700 children and 

adults with diabetes, helping them effectively manage 

their blood sugar through diet, medication, exercise, and 

stress reduction. Studies show diabetes education can 

reduce complications by 50 percent and hospitalizations 

by 72 percent, and that every dollar invested in diabetes 

education can cut health care costs by up to $8.76. 

Thanks to Humphreys, people are healthier, they feel better, 

they stay out of the hospital, and they save money. Young 

and old, they are preventing or successfully managing 

diabetes and living their best quality of life. 

Compassionate Care 

As nurse care manager at St. Luke’s EOMA, Mary Stearns (above, right) gets 

to know and care about her patients. A crucial part of her job is to listen and 

understand the big picture of each patient’s physical, mental, behavioral, 

and social health needs. 

One of those patients was Eileen, who died in 2012 at the age of 87. Mary 

helped Eileen manage her many medications, arrange for home care, and 

connect with community resources, including help for domestic abuse. 

She worked with Eileen’s daughter Pam (above, left) to try to keep Eileen 

out of the abusive situation. “Mary did everything she could do,” Pam says. 

“Every time I cried, she was right there for me.” 

At the end, Mary says, Eileen finally found peace, under the gentle care of 

hospice and in assisted living, away from her abuser.

fun with your family. Increase your knowledge. Challenge 

yourself. Build your confidence. 

Let me hear you say YEAH! 

That’s Youth Engaged in Activities for Health, a fun and 

exciting program that helps children and teens dealing 

with weight issues to develop the tools to take charge of 

their health. Ten-year-old Zayra Martinez is a Wood River 

YEAH! kid who completed the program with her parents, 

Gabriel and Maria, and her little sister Berenice. And 

yes, it was a family project, because YEAH! requires a 

family commitment. 

YEAH! is also a safe place for kids to socialize without fear 

of teasing or bullying. They make new friends and gain 

confidence; some have even gone out for sports for the 

first time. Maria says she liked the program because now 

Zayra really understands why her body needs fruits and 

vegetables, and the whole family is more active together. 

Zayra says she liked it because it was fun. 

During the four-month program, Zayra and her family 

worked with the YEAH! team, which included a doctor, 

nurse, dietitian, social worker, physical therapist, and YMCA 

fitness coach. They went to weekly classes where they 

learned about nutrition and behavior modification, set goals 

for the upcoming week, and did fun physical activities like 

rock climbing, swimming, and Zumba.

It Takes a Village 

Preventing childhood obesity is a high-priority, System-wide initiative of St. Luke’s Children’s, and we 

are committed to working with community partners to address this growing epidemic. In addition to 

the Wood River program, YEAH! is also offered in Meridian and Twin Falls. YEAH! partners include local 

pediatricians and family medicine physicians, the Wood River YMCA, St. Luke’s-Elks Rehab, Blue Cross of 

Idaho Foundation for Health, St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation, and St. Luke’s Center for Community Health.

Bringing Specialists to 

the Region 

Value = Coordinated Care 

Orthopedic surgeon Greg Irvine thought he was 

coming to McCall to slow down. And although 

he’s cut back on what was a 90-hour work week 

in his longtime Portland practice, he’s busier 

than he expected in his new, small mountain 

town environment. 

Having an orthopedic surgeon in town has made 

a big difference for families in McCall and the 

surrounding area. Before Dr. Irvine’s arrival, people 

often traveled to Boise or Lewiston for even simple 

injuries like a broken bone. Today, they can have a 

hip or knee replaced at St. Luke’s McCall, including 

all pre- and post-surgery appointments and 

physical therapy. 

“Patients recover better close to home,” Dr. Irvine 

says. “Traveling for all those appointments, 

especially when you’re in pain, is a heavy burden— 

financially, physically, and time-wise.” 

Work-related injuries in ranching, logging, industrial, 

and mining bring in many of his patients, along 

with recreational injuries from activities such as 

skiing and hiking. Not all patients can be treated 

in McCall; they may have other needs, such as 

cardiology or intensive care following surgery. In 

those cases, Dr. Irvine arranges immediate care 

with a Boise orthopedist. 

“My fellow St. Luke’s docs have provided 

tremendous support, both here and in Boise,” he 

says. “Between our local primary care doctors 

and the specialists in Boise, we provide seamless, 

integrated care.” 

St. Luke’s employed physician model is 

the key to recruiting specialists to our 

communities. Doctors may feel they face too 

many uncertainties to take a chance in an 

area with a low population like ours, so we 

do all we can to lower the risk. 

When doctors know they can focus on 

medicine rather than worrying about running 

a business, when they know they are joining 

an integrated health care system where 

primary and specialty physicians work 

together to provide coordinated care, they 

are much more likely to choose to live and 

practice in Idaho with St. Luke’s.

From the time she was born, Karly Wiggins was a regular at St. Luke’s Children’s 

Metabolic Clinic. Today, at age 6, she only checks in with her old friends once 

a year. How Karly got from there to here tells the story of St. Luke’s Children’s 

philosophy of care: We provide a wide range of pediatric specialists so kids and 

families receive advanced care close to home, and when children must leave the 

state for care, we work closely with the out-of-state hospital to help coordinate their 

treatment and safe return. 

Like every baby born in Idaho, Karly underwent newborn blood screening. This 

standard testing screens for more than 46 conditions, including citrullinemia type 1. 

In the liver, excess protein is converted to ammonia, which is then broken down 

and excreted as urine. Karly is missing one of the enzymes vital to this process; 

without treatment, highly toxic ammonia could quickly build up to dangerous levels 

in her body. 

Karly’s care was managed by her primary care doctor and a team of specialists, 

including those at the Metabolic Clinic: Dr. Cary Harding—a metabolic disease 

specialist who regularly travels to Boise from Doernbecher Children’s Hospital 

in Portland—along with a St. Luke’s dietitian, nurse, and genetic counselor. Her 

Metabolic Clinic visits included a complete examination—from the condition of her 

hair and skin to her nutrition and growth. 

Following her successful liver transplant, 

Karly Wiggins has become a big fan of ice cream. 

At age 4, Karly’s liver began to fail, and her current treatment was no longer 

enough. She eventually underwent a liver transplant at Primary Children’s Hospital in 

Salt Lake, and received follow-up care from her Boise doctors. 

The transplant changed her life, says her mom, Kara. “She’s a completely different 

kid now—she has lots of energy and keeps up with her brothers. We feel very, 

very lucky.”

At St. Luke’s Children’s seven multidisciplinary clinics, kids and parents can see several specialists at a 

single appointment. Clinics include cystic fibrosis, NICU follow-up, cleft lip and palate, spina bifida, bowel 

and bladder, metabolic, and genetics.

Value = Discovery 

Welcome to the promise of the human 

genome project. 

Kalydeco is a breakthrough treatment for people 

with a certain type of cystic fibrosis—a gene 

mutation that results in a thick, sticky mucus 

particularly dangerous to the lungs and digestive 

system. And Kalydeco is not just a breakthrough for 

cystic fibrosis (CF), but a model for other conditions 

with mutated genes. The drug is a “small molecule” 

that alters the protein structure and function at 

the cellular level, allowing cells with the mutant 

gene to function more like normal cells. In other 

words, the gene is still broken, but the patient is no 

longer sick. 

Rachel Gerdon took part in the Kalydeco Phase 3 

study through St. Luke’s Cystic Fibrosis Center of 

Idaho. She has not been hospitalized even once 

since she started taking the drug three years ago. 

Before that, she was in the hospital every three to 

four months with serious lung infections, missing 

two to three weeks of work at a time and racking 

up staggering medical bills. And she was getting 

sicker every year. 

But within two months of taking the drug, Rachel 

was breathing more easily and had more energy. 

She and the other study participants showed 

dramatic improvements in lung function, and a few 

even gained some weight—a major challenge for 

people who have CF. 

Rachel has no doubt that without Kalydeco she 

would not be able to keep up with her young 

daughter or teach the gymnastics classes she 

loves. “CF kept me from doing things because I 

was either sick or avoiding places where I might 

pick up a bug,” she says. “Now I don’t even think 

about it. For the first time, I have a normal life.”

Patients Are at the Heart 

of Research 

St. Luke’s is committed to bringing cutting-edge 

research opportunities to all eligible patients, to 

help improve their medical outcomes and quality 

of life. 

We pushed forward in this commitment in 2011 

by hiring Mark Roberts, MD as our first-ever 

System Medical Director of Research. Dr. Roberts 

is leading a research team that oversaw 218 

studies last year, involving 2,297 adult and 

child participants. 

These studies include: 

• The evaluation of a new drug that “turns 

off” an abnormal gene in infants who have 

the most common childhood cancer, acute 

lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). 

• A national research project dedicated to 

osteochondritis dissecans of the knee, a 

cartilage problem affecting an increasing 

number of young athletes. 

• Nursing research fellowship projects ranging 

from “Healing Touch” to IV insertion. 

• A virtual education program for young adults 

who have diabetes, a partnership between 

St. Luke’s Humphreys Diabetes Center, the 

University of Idaho, and the National Institutes 

of Health.

To lead as a health system, a strong research program will

St. Luke’s Jerome! 

A trusted health care resource in the 

Magic Valley since 1952, St. Benedicts 

Family Medical Center joined St. Luke’s 

Health System in 2011. St. Luke’s Jerome 

is working particularly close with St. Luke’s 

Magic Valley, recently joining their two 

Foundations into one integrated Foundation 

to support St. Luke’s and the community. 

Value = Access to Primary Care 

Strong primary care is the cornerstone of St. Luke’s 

vision to transform health care. We believe 

everyone should have access to medical care, 

and those at risk for injury, medical complications, 

or serious illness should receive comprehensive, 

coordinated care. 

This includes a “medical home,” in which a team 

of primary and specialty physicians and other 

caregivers works closely together to provide 

patients with an individual care plan to promote 

their best health. 

Idaho has a primary care shortage, particularly 

in regions that are largely rural and sparsely 

populated. We know that when people must 

travel far for health services, or when they have no 

insurance and no medical home, they often put off 

seeking care for a problem until it becomes a fullblown 

health crisis, or until it is too late. St. Luke’s 

is meeting the need by: 

• Bringing primary care physicians to urban and 

rural areas through employment and other 

financial arrangements. 

• Giving doctors the support they need to care for 

Medicare, Medicaid, and non-insured patients. 

• Working to extend hours to evenings and 

weekends at many St. Luke’s clinics, and making 

them accessible to all St. Luke’s patients, 

regardless of their home clinic. 

• Hiring more nurse practitioners and physician 

assistants to work closely with physicians as 

integral members of the care team. 

Value = Safety + Better Care 

Sepsis is a dangerous complication that kills 

as many people each year as heart attack, and 

outnumbers death from breast cancer almost five 

to one. And it’s avoidable. 

Preventing and reducing sepsis and other serious 

complications such as infection, pneumonia, 

and bed sores are vital to survival and quality 

of life for our patients. They also result in lower 

medical costs. 

St. Luke’s was a national leader in developing the 

standards to prevent, identify, and treat sepsis— 

evidence-based procedures that have been 

shown over time to be the most successful. In 

our Emergency Departments, we are recognizing 

sepsis and potential sepsis earlier, and aggressively 

St. Luke’s Health System’s overall sepsis 

mortality rate in 2011 was less than half 

the national rate. 

treating patients within the first six hours of 

admission. In our Critical Care Units, Operating 

Rooms, and patient rooms, doctors and nurses 

follow specific steps to prevent the infections that 

can lead to sepsis, and intervene immediately when 

sepsis does occur. 

These efforts are resulting in dramatic 

improvements in the outcomes for people with 

sepsis, with prevention rates that rank among the 

best in the country. We improved by 70% the rate 

of patients receiving perfect sepsis care, and our 

data shows we are saving the lives of patients who 

would otherwise not have survived—at least 25 

lives saved from 2009-11. 

What is Sepsis 

Sepsis is a potentially life-threatening illness in 

which the bloodstream becomes overwhelmed 

by bacteria as it fights an infection. It’s most 

common and most dangerous in the elderly, 

children, and those who have a weakened 

immune system, are obese, or have a chronic 

condition like type 2 diabetes. If sepsis 

progresses to septic shock, blood pressure drops 

dramatically and major organs and body systems, 

including the kidneys, liver, lungs, and central 

nervous system, stop working.

The hospital has added new patient beds 

and bright, new exterior signs for increased 

visibility, day and night. Plans are under 

way for a new nurse call light system and 

interactive TVs in patient rooms. 

Looking toward the future, St. Luke’s Jerome 

has engaged four local community focus 

groups in assessing the area’s health care 

needs: the medical staff, the Hispanic/Latino 

community, hospital and clinic employees, 

and community members and leaders.

Air St. Luke’s is a crucial part of our new 

Transfer Center, which serves referring 

physicians and their critically ill patients from 

around the region. The center is staffed 24/7 by 

registered nurses, and provides immediate access 

to emergency transport services and consultation 

with cardiologists, neonatologists, obstetricians, 

pediatric critical care, and other specialists.

Value = Education 

Education is everything to Boise State nursing student 

Minela Kostjerevac. When she left Bosnia with her parents 

at age 11, none of them spoke English. Now, at 22, Minela 

is a college senior and ready to make a difference. 

“I wanted to do something rewarding for myself and 

others,” she says. “Something challenging, with real 

opportunities for growth.” 

Medical school students and residents gain valuable hands-on experience 

at St. Luke’s hospitals and clinics through our partnerships with Family 

Medicine Residency of Idaho and the University of Washington’s primary care 

and psychiatry programs. 

But the majority of our students are in undergraduate and graduate programs 

at Boise State University, Idaho State University, the College of Southern 

Idaho, and Northwest Nazarene University. Most are nursing students, but 

nearly every field is represented, including respiratory therapy, social work, 

pharmacy, culinary arts, surgical technology, paramedic training, dietitian 

studies, radiology, and physical, occupational, and speech therapy. 

Minela attended Meridian Medical Arts High School, 

completed internships, became a certified nursing aid, 

and volunteered. Every step contributed to her decision 

to choose nursing. She completed her clinical rotation at 

St. Luke’s Boise on the Telemetry Unit, where patients are 

on continuous cardiac monitoring. She took care of two 

patients each shift, performing under the supervision of a 

registered nurse. 

“Nurses make the difference,” Minela says. “They 

empathize with patients, and really make them feel 

at home.”

Involvement 

Over his long career as a U.S. Air Force pilot, Steve Kaatz was proud to be part 

of something bigger than himself. He feels the same way about serving on the 

boards of St. Luke’s Magic Valley and Jerome. 

“I joined the St. Luke’s Board because I want to make sure we’re on the 

cutting edge of medicine, and to lead others to become committed donors to 

St. Luke’s,” Steve says. 

Steve is one of 90 board members and more than 500 volunteers who give 

their time and skills to benefit St. Luke’s Health System. Our board members 

are community stakeholders who are making decisions and leading innovation 

at St. Luke’s because they are committed to quality health care for their 

families, friends, and neighbors. 

As a member of the Foundation Board, Steve was deeply involved in 

fundraising to help bring the new, state-of-the-art medical center in Twin Falls 

from vision to reality. 

“My dreams were exceeded,” he says. 

Value = Electronic Medical Records 

Access to information is at the heart of 

“myStLuke’s,” our new electronic health record 

system—information that makes health care safer, 

more efficient, and easier for patients to navigate. 

Through the system’s “myChart” feature, patients 

can communicate with their doctor’s office, access 

test results, request an appointment, and review 

their health history—all through the convenience of 

their own laptop, desktop, or tablet. 

With myStLuke’s, doctors have patients’ current 

health information and medical history at their 

fingertips, allowing them to most effectively 

coordinate each patient’s care, reducing duplication 

of tests, communicating instantly with other 

providers, and receiving automatic reminders when 

a patient is due for a test or screening. Doctors can 

transmit prescriptions electronically, reducing the 

risk of transcription errors, and can look at drug 

interactions, allergies, and whether a certain drug is 

covered by the patient’s insurance, before ever contacting 

the pharmacy. 

Eight pilot sites began implementation of myStLuke’s in 

November 2011, and additional hospital services and 

clinics have been added in waves in a process that will 

continue through 2013. More than 5,000 patients are 

actively using myChart, and nearly 2.8 million lab results 

and more than 450,000 imaging reports have been added 

to patient records. In the works: a myChart app that will 

allow patients to access their health record directly from 

their smart phone.

St. Luke’s Kid For A Night is the Children’s Hospital’s largest annual 

fundraiser. Just like Magic Valley’s Epicurean Evening, McCall’s 

Big Squeeze, and Wood River’s Winter Ball, Kid For A Night brings 

friends of St. Luke’s together to put the “fun” in fundraising. 

The new St. Luke’s Nampa opened July 1, 2012, with a full-service 

Emergency Department, along with lab and medical imaging services. 

Additional services will roll out as interior construction progresses. The 

project represents a $30 million investment in Canyon County, and will 

create an estimated 300 new jobs when completed.

Taylor Moss is triple-lucky. And not just because 

she’s a triplet, although that’s pretty cool. Her really 

big luck is that she survived cancer. 

But anyone who knows Taylor’s story will tell you it 

was way more than good luck. She had top care 

from top experts in childhood cancer at St. Luke’s 

MSTI. And she had some extra special people 

backing her up: her parents, D.H. and Margaret, 

her bothers, Caleb and Nick, and a bunch of family 

and friends. 

“The people at MSTI were nothing but great,” D.H. 

says. “Every person was 100 percent professional 

and caring.” 

But D.H. and Margaret saw that staff and families 

had long outgrown the clinic space, so on the 

advice of one of Taylor’s nurses, Barb Scott, they 

decided to give $100,000 to help expand the 

pediatric facilities. Because he owns Tom Scott 

Motors, D.H. was able to structure the gift over five 

years to maximize the potential of matching gifts 

from Toyota. 

“When you take something as devastating as your 

child having cancer, and make it such a positive 

experience,” D.H. says, “there’s never a big enough 

way to say thanks.”

St. Luke’s MSTI Pediatrics expansion is already 

under way, with a beautiful new waiting room 

(above) with plenty of space and fun activities 

for kids, families, and the care team. The 

next phase will more than double exam and 

treatment rooms. Other upcoming projects 

at St. Luke’s include an expansion of the 

Children’s Hospital and a new Heart Hospital 

in Boise.

A Clear Choice in the Magic Valley 

Clear Springs Foods is the world’s largest producer of rainbow trout, processing more than 

20 million pounds of the colorful fish every year. Founded in 1966 and located in the ruggedly 

beautiful Snake River Canyon near Buhl, Clear Springs is a privately held, employee owned 

company. And its 350 employees were thrilled when a brand new hospital opened in their 

community in 2011. 

Clear Springs and St. Luke’s Magic Valley have been close partners for many years, working
