Cow Family Consistency by Morgan Lundy - Essay Contest Winner
Morgan Lundy
is the 14-year-old
daughter of Scott
and Deb Lundy
of Jefferson, Wisconsin.
Morgan
along with her
parents, brother
Mark, and sister
Megan own and
operate the 190-
acre Lundy Farm,
where they milk
55 cows and raise
80-head of young
stock. The herd is currently 75% red and white and
25% red factored. Morgan’s main responsibility on
the farm is as calf manager. She is very active in
the Cream of the Crop 4-H Club, where she is currently
serving as treasurer. She is also active in
the Fort Atkinson FFA, Jefferson County and Wisconsin
Junior Holstein Associations. Morgan also
enjoys dairy judging, dairy bowl, and exhibiting her
red and whites at the Jefferson County Fair, Midwest
Spring Show, and World Dairy Expo.
Cow families have been the basis for our breeding
program for decades. Many of our best cow
families began with a foundation of one of our
many Excellent Triple Threat daughters. But the
cow family that has impacted my dairy career is
the Moza’s. Faithland-Farms Mozambique, a
Beckenrah Elm Park Max-Red daughter, jumped
off a trailer at the 1989 International Red and White
Show and Sale as a wild, hairy bred heifer, but my
mother instantly seen the correct heifer beneath
and purchased her later that week in partnership
with her sister Cindy Utech.
A look into her pedigree finds a GP-81 Vigo
Magnetize dam and a Good 78 grand dam. Perhaps
disappointing to a pedigree fanatic, but my
mother has always been the kind of person who is
much more interested in the animal then its pedigree
and numbers. However, I believe greatness
doesn’t come out of the blue and a deeper look
into her pedigree finds the matron of the family to
be Detert Beacon Inka Mistress EX-95 with lifetime
totals of 224,477M and 4.6% 10,297F. As a sevenyear-old
she completed a record of 25,619M 4.7%
1,211F, which made her a 1958 Honor List Leader.
Through the 1960s she was one of Wisconsin’s favorite
cows, being successful in the showring and
placing popular sons in A.I. here in the U.S and
in Japan. Nearly 50 years later the cow family is
still maintained excellent production, components,
longevity and conformation.
Moza’s first calf was a large bull by Enhancer.
Extremely large calves are something that has always
run in the family, but their wide rumps have
never caused it to be a problem. A mating to Deslacs
Boy George-Red, an Astro Jet son, produced
her fi rst heifer named Megan. Megan was shown
as a spring calf, but did nothing extravagant.
One year later a Browndale Fire-Red daughter
named Magic proved to be a major attraction to
our farm, as a very correct stylish heifer and early
Browndale Fire daughter. As a spring calf she was
nominated All-American.
In 1993, the family proved itself to be a force
in the showring. Magic stood second in the spring
yearling class, which earned her a Reserve All-
American title, while her sister Megan was fresh
as a junior two year old, and won the futurity and
the junior two year old class earning the title of
All-American 2-Year Old. Again in March like
clockwork Moza produced a third daughter by SFL
Scarlets Markem (Chief Mark son of Fagin Scarlet)
named Melanie.
Melanie was everyone’s favorite cow to work
with as she occupied a walkway stall for nearly a
decade. Consistency was her forte, as she calved
in the first two weeks of June for eight consecutive
years producing nine calves and easily exceeded
100,000 lbs. of milk lifetime. Many of Melanie’s
daughters and descendants made homes in other
herds, but we are still milking her eight year old
Rubens daughter.
It was Moza’s fi rst daughter Boy George Megan
that set the pace for the family by becoming its
first All-American and scored VG-85 as a 2 year
old. Like Moza and Melanie she calved regularly,
every June, and produced six natural born daughters.
Testing 5.2% butterfat she made over 1,000
pounds of fat as a 5 year old. She also became
the first member of the family to surpass 100,000
pounds of milk lifetime. She had successful
daughters by Kentville Stardust, Cherown Brilliant
and Corbeil Delco.
Her best daughter Brilliant Monica was a VG-
86 2 year old who in her own right produced successful
daughters. Delco Mistletoe was one such
daughter. As a 3 year old she stood 3rd at the
Midwest Spring Show. She then returned two
years later to win her class as a dry cow in 2004.
Making a trip to World Dairy Expo she was fi rst
junior owned aged cow. Not being pictured that
year kept her out of the All-American contest and
from likely adding a Jr. All-American title and open
nomination to her resume. As an eight year old
she was Reserve Grand Champion at our County
Fair in 2007, while making her best record to date
with 24,464M 5.1% 1244F 3.1 750P. She is also
over 100,000 lbs. of milk lifetime and is bred to
calve to Starfi re in September.
Moza’s second daughter Fire Magic was lost
after her second calving, however her fi rst calf by
Exodus Handsome has kept this branch of the
family going strong and become a brood cow in
her own right. Handsome Magic was shown as
a summer yearling a World Dairy Expo in 1996
where she fi nished fourth. She returned to Expo
as a 4-year old where she had many admirers
and became one of Handsome’s oldest and most
successful daughters. Magic calved eight times
producing several outstanding daughters and became
another member of the family to easily surpass
100,000 lbs. of milk lifetime.
Magic was Reserve Grand Champion at our
County Fair as an eight year old in 2003. Also
in 2003 she returned to the colored shavings to
place second in the dry cow class. Along with her
was her Rubens daughter (Mattie) who was a senior
three year old. Mattie was fi rst junior owned
senior three year old and placed fourth in the Bill
Graham Futurity. The pair was third in the dam
and daughter class and Mattie was a member of
our winning senior best three females. Though
never bred for index Mattie won the genetic merit
award in 2003 and again in 2004. Mattie’s Delco
daughter also won a genetic merit award in 2004
as a summer yearling and placed eighth. Mattie
was second four year old at the Midwest Spring
Red and White show in 2004, was a member of
54
our winning senior best three females and helped
us earn the Premier Breeder Banner that year.
Mattie made her best record as a 6 year old with
28,986M 3.7% 1065F 3.5% 1001P. She too has
surpassed 100,000 lbs. of milk lifetime and is fresh
as an eight year old this year with an incredible
March calf by Delco. In addition she has may other
exciting daughters, one of which is a black-red
yearling from a homebred Canyon-Breeze Allen
son from a 12-year old Maughlin Storm dam then
an EX 39,000M Astro Jet..
The next generation and member of the family
to enter the showring is an early Dutchline Red
Devil daughter from Mattie’s Lakeside sister. Red
Devil Mulberry was a very dairy stretchy January
2007 calf that walked on the colored shavings in
2007 and looks even better for 2008.
Careful Sire Selection
There are more good red and red factored bulls
available today then ever from A.I. companies
and with the access breeders now have breeding
good red cows has become easier and we have
seen great improvement in the breed. We don’t
try to use the newest, most “popular” bulls. We
simply use bulls that offer complementary matings.
Over the years we have relied heavily on
our own bulls with pedigrees fi lled with high type
long-lasting cows. We also use several young
sires from appealing cow families. Triple Threat
laid the foundation for most of our cow families,
which was followed by a homebred Jubilant son
from and EX Caveman dam that produced several
All-Americans for us. Over the past ten years the
bull that has worked for us and continues to do
a great job in producing the kind of cows we like
is Corbeil Delco. Recently, the proven bulls that
are working on our cows are Redman, Talent, and
Starfi re.
With the consistent breeding pattern of this cow
family selecting bulls has been easy. We have always
made type the priority. Size and stature are
important. We feel maintaining height of front-end
and width of chest is crucial. We also emphasize
udder, foot and leg, rump width, bone quality, and
depth of rib.
Longevity is also very important to us. We like
to have a surplus of about 20 head to sell each
year. Over 50% of the herd is in their third or over
lactation and we maintain a cull rate of 10-12%.
The measure of a great cow is through her
descendants. In this regard Moza excelled. While
many cow families garner fame for a few years and
then fade away, the Mozas have sustained their
popularity for decades with no signs of slowing
down. Currently 1/5 of our 50-cow herd derives
from Moza without a single embryo transfer. It has
been their inherent type and production qualities
that have brought them to the forefront of the herd.
They all have the same easygoing personality, aggressive
appetite, and remarkable reproductive
performance. What keeps the family fresh and
growing is their tremendous longevity and type,
which can please the most discriminating breeder.
The breeding philosophy of emphasizing cow
families and appealing sire stacks that my family
has so faithfully followed has meant generation
after generation that can compete in the showring
produce persistently quality component-rich milk
year after year.

Albrecht Memorial Scholarships
My name is David Wilson and I am
proud to be a recipient of the 2008 Albrecht
Scholarship. I grew up on my family’s dairy
farm outside of Port Royal, PA with my
parents Steve and Barb Wilson. We milk
30 Holsteins, Red and Whites, and Brown
Swiss on the dairy with about 35 additional
youngstock. I will be a senior at Penn
State University this fall, majoring in Animal
Sciences.
I became interested in Red and
Whites at a young age, and this interest
only grew as I became older. My fi rst red
and white calf was born in 1994 from the
purchase of a single embryo at the “Where Old Friends Meet” sale. This
animal was the nucleus of my red and white herd, leading to a Red and
White Junior All-American nomination in 2005. I have been very active in
growing my Red and White herd and have successfully merchandised from
these cattle over the past several years. Also, I have been active in RWDCA
activities, placing first in the senior division of the Red and White essay contest
in 2007.
At Penn State, I am an active member of the Dairy Science Club, serving
as Vice President this year. In 2007, I was a member of the winning dairy
judging team at the National Intercollegiate Dairy Judging Competition at
World Dairy Expo and earned All-American honors.
In the future, I plan to work on the genetic side of the dairy industry, either
working for an AI company or as a classifi er for a breed organization.
I sincerely appreciate the support of the Red and White Dairy Cattle
Association, and look forward to maintaining my Red and White herd into
the future.
Hello, my name is Samantha Garst.
Agriculture has always been a part of my
life, having grown up on my family's dairy
farm, Garstlyn Farm, in New Windsor,
Maryland with my parents Brad and Sheila
Garst and my sister Danielle. Currently, we
are not a milking dairy farm, but we board
show heifers for various investors. In the
past, we have boarded and milked many
show animals including Fannie, Caramac,
Marlene and Miss Special. Having this quality
of show animals on the farm has certainly
helped to inspire my interest in the Red &
White breed.
I have been a member of 4-H for nine years and a member of FFA for
three years, holding many offi ces in both. In addition to my agricultural extracurricular
activities, I was also involved in National Honors Society, Student
Government Association and National Art Honor Society. I graduated from
South Carroll High School in the top fi fteen percentile of my class. This fall, I
will be attending Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, majoring
in Dairy Science. I then hope to attend Virginia-Maryland Regional College
of Veterinary Medicine to pursue a career, and my dream, in Veterinary
Pathology.
I want to thank the selection committee for choosing me as one of the
recipients for this year's Albrecht Memorial Scholarship. I am very honored
to have been chosen for the scholarship.
A very special thank you goes to Dana Erway and Richard Green for all of
their hard work and dedication to raising funds for the Albrecht Memorial!
Thank you to Dana Erway for donating this year's Raffle Calf!
We would also like to thank Lorne Ruesink, MI for purchasing the giclee!
My Junior Story by Kelsey Crull - Essay Contest Winner
I am Kelsey Crull from Poplar Grove, IL. I am 16 and
currently a sophomore at North Boone High School. I
have grown up on a dairy farm with registered Red
and White and Black and White Holsteins, many of the
black ones are red factored.
When I was three years old, I had a favorite little Red
and White calf, her name was Rosette. She was all red
with a white spot on her forehead. She was sired by
Strickler Royal Cadillac *RC. I had a huge obsession
with taking her out on the halter and leading her around
and always wanting to play with her like she was a puppy; and when she
didn’t want to run around anymore, I still wanted to! She would lie down
while I was leading her because she was so tired from walking. I fell in
love with her. My parents decided to give me my fi rst calf, it was Rosette!
That year I got to show her at the county fair. Rosette ended up going VG
and had many daughters. Since Rosette, my herd of cattle has grown to
fourteen, many going back to her. One of her daughters Rosalie has made
close to 200,000 lbs. milk and over 6000 lbs. of both fat and protein lifetime.
She is still going.
On our family farm, I enjoy helping with the daily chore routines. I am
responsible for most of the milkings, working with the veterinarian and assisting
with other everyday activities. I enjoy looking through the information
on the many bulls available and selecting the matings on my own and our
family’s cattle. Some of my goals in my breeding program are to continue
to improve the type and production of my cows. I like to use bulls that are
unique and outcross, using many young sires in our matings.
Through the years, being in 4-H, FFA, sports, showing
at the district shows and county fairs and working on
the family farm has given me numerous opportunities.
I have attended many dairy seminars and have participated
at the PDPW Youth Leadership Derby. I am very
involved in the Udder 4-H Club, holding an offi ce as
president. I enjoy showing at our county fair, showing in
both 4-H and open show and helping the younger members
get ready for the show. The showmanship class
is my favorite class because I always learn something
new each year.
This year, I have been selected to represent Illinois on our Dairy Quiz
Bowl team that will compete at National Holstein Convention. I enjoy FFA,
serving as the ’07-’08 president. I have dairy as my FFA SAE project. This
past year, I was the Section Dairy Profi ciency winner and competed at the
District competition. One of my favorite things is participating in dairy judging
contests through both 4-H and FFA. I like playing school sports, my
favorites are volleyball and softball.
Growing up on a farm is much different than the life of most of the kids in
our area, but I enjoy sharing farm life with them. In the future, I look forward
to going to college and studying animal science. After college, I would like to
continue breeding and showing Red and White dairy cattle and be involved
with our family farm.
GENETICVISIONS ®
Identifying your calf’s potential now…
Now you can look at your herd’s future through Genetic Visions technology! Genetic Visions
can look at your heifer or bull calf's potential prior to entering the herd or progeny testing by
using genetic markers to help identify the most promising animals.
FREEMARTIN
TESTING
The “Y” chromosome can
be detected in blood at birth
and beyond. Its presence in
the female's blood indicates
a freemartin.
COAT COLOR
Genetic Visions utilizes DNA
techniques to quickly identify
your red-carrier, true red or
true black Holsteins. Genetic
Visions also detects the Wild-
Type allele associated with
Black/Red.
BLAD
You can also test
for BLAD, a
simple recessive
gene defect found
in Holstein cattle.
CVM TESTING
Genetic Visions' CVM test is
recognized by the Holstein
Association USA; therefore,
the results will be recorded
and listed on pedigrees.
…means a greater profit yield in your future.
Genetic Visions technology is another valuable selection enhancement tool that ultimately gives
you a competitive edge in today’s fast-paced global market.
