Galston Public School has a great website that all families should take the time to look at. On the
website you can find:
The latest newsletter
Photos of the students on excursions, at drama performances, etc
Direct link to the on-line website for ordering school uniforms
Copies of current permission notes
If your child has not brought home a permission note, you can simply download a copy directly
from the website. If you are having trouble receiving the newsletter by email, you will be able to
find a copy of the latest newsletter as well as past copies. Thanks to Mrs Morgan, in the school
office, for all her hard work keeping the website up-to-date.
5C News
The term began with a bang, as 5C students participated keenly in the school athletics carnival. The
following week many performed in the ArtsNorth Drama Festival, then we all readied ourselves to
have fun with 5/6P on the Years 5 & 6 excursion to Canberra and Mt Selwyn.
The excellent performances in the athletics carnival are continuing for some students at the zone and
area carnivals. The drama festival proved to be a great experience for the performers and audience
members. Our trip to the national capital provided many wonderful hands-on lessons, not only on
democracy, Australian history and federal government, but on resilience, tolerance of food not
cooked by our mums, and how to cope with early morning starts!
With the flurry of these exciting events behind us, 5C students have settled into applying themselves
really well. In mathematics, we have been working with fractions (especially enjoying solving
problems with mandarin segments and chocolate squares) and using compass points and coordinates
effectively in mapping tasks. In and around Book Week, we enjoyed reading some fantastic stories
that have inspired us to write for our buddy readers in 1C and 1K.
We also experimented with surrealist art, after reading the short-listed book, ‘Surrealism for Kids’.
Pom-pom making is the current craft trend in the classroom whilst watching our Questacon lava
lamp glow and change. Each Thursday Miss Gray turns 5C into ‘Change Detectives’ to conduct
interesting experiments.
As the end of the term gets closer, we will don our aprons to bake amazing cakes and sweet treats,
to help support the year 6 students at their mini-fete. There won’t be any science experiments
happening here though, we promise!
Parent Helpers
It has been wonderful to witness the number of parent helpers in the school,
especially in classrooms. This assistance is greatly appreciated by teachers and
certainly assists students with their learning. It is also extremely beneficial for
students to see mum or dad helping in the classroom, as it demonstrates that
education is valued. Thank you to all parents who assist in the school, whether it
be in the classroom, canteen, uniform shop or P&C. We greatly appreciate that you give up your
time to help. Please remember, prior to assisting with a school activity, all parent helpers need to
complete the sign on book in the office. Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated.

leadership skills during peer groups. Well done, Joshua and Jessica!
Beecroft Zone Track Carnival
Today, Miss Payne took a team of athletes to Greenway Park to
compete in the Beecroft Zone Track Carnival. We wished all
competitors good luck and know that they will have represented Galston Public School with pride.
Thank you to the parents who offered to transport children to and from the event. A report on our
school’s achievements in track and field will be in next week’s newsletter
P & C News
Michelle Vumbaca has decided to resign from her position as P&C President. Michelle
has been a wonderful P&C President for the last three years and has made an
outstanding contribution to Galston Public School. On behalf of the staff of Galston
Public School and the school community, we would like to sincerely thank Michelle for
her fantastic work as P&C President. It has been a pleasure to work with her and we
appreciate the tremendous amount of effort and commitment she has displayed in assisting to make
Galston Public School a ‘better place’. Thank you, Michelle.
At the P&C Annual General Meeting, which will be held on Tuesday 18 September, all positions will
be declared vacant. It is extremely important that community members are willing to be nominated
for these important positions, including president, as the P&C is instrumental in promoting the school
and ensuring our school is provided with excellent resources.
Indigenous Performer and Book Swap
Next Tuesday is our Indigenous Performance Day. Please remember to send in your child’s
permission slip and money so he/she can come and see the performance. Next Wednesday is the
Book Swap Day. Keep bringing in those books as we have a fabulous collection to choose from.
Remember all donations will go to remote indigenous children to help with their reading.
Debating
Yesterday Connor, Georgia, Katherine and Callum travelled to Glenorie Public School to debate
‘Society is too protective of children’. Galston was the negative team arguing that society is not too
protective and a child deserves quality care and freedom. The students had a fabulous debate but
did not win on the day. A big thank you to Callum who stepped in at the last moment as our team
adviser, as Jesse was unwell. Well done team!

Open Day in the Library
Thanks to the generosity of many parents we had over 100 books donated to the library during
Open Day. These books can be borrowed and taken home this week. Mrs Morgan has been
working very hard processing all of the books and has happily covered them all!
Reading Before School
This term Reading Before School has continued and the students are starting to remember when it is
their day to read. Last week we had the happy circumstance of students queuing at the door of the
reading room before school so they could have their turn at reading! Unfortunately we had to cut
their time very short so that everyone could have a turn.
It would be really helpful if we could enlist the help of another parent on Thursday mornings so that
every student who attends can have someone to listen to their reading. It only takes half an hour, so
instead of standing in the cold playground waiting for the bell, why not come along to the warm
reading room, have a seat and encourage children with their reading at the same time. If you would
like to help, please contact Mrs Pendharkar via the school office.
Galston Public School Business Directory – 3 rd Edition
It is very exciting that the Business Directory for 2013 will be our school’s third edition. For new
parents and families to our school, this is a wonderful ready reference of businesses directly
associated with our school.
If you, or a relative, are involved in a business or money making hobby please consider taking out an
advertisement in our booklet. This will let others know of the vast array of skills and talents that we
have right here and also promote your activity to the wider community. Our school is growing all
the time and we are sure there are many new connections that we could make through this
document. We have deliberately kept the prices the same as the first Directory in the hope of
making it as affordable as possible and encouraging new listings. A half page ad is very reasonably
priced at $50.00. Further details are included later in this newsletter.
Crusaders Summit Educational Camp
For students in Years 3 and 4, this great experience of a two day (one night) camp will be held on
Thursday 11 October and Friday 12 October, the first week of Term 4. As there are still a few details
to finalise, Mrs Weiss would really appreciate if you could let her know if your child is definitely not
participating in this camp as final numbers are required. As well, information about any special
dietary requirements for your child is needed. The deposit of $50.00 should have been paid by
Friday 17 August 2012. The final payment of $85.00 is due by Friday 14 September.
Bendigo Bank 10 th Birthday Celebration
On Sunday 7 October Bendigo Bank will be hosting a 10 th birthday
celebration at Galston High School. Part of the celebration will be a Children
of Galston District display. Bendigo Bank has invited all Year 3 to Year 6
children to complete a project on the theme: ‘Why Bendigo Bank is
important to the Galston & District Community’.
A note was sent home earlier this term containing the instructions to complete the project. All
completed projects need to be returned to your child’s teacher by Monday 17 September 2012.
Please ensure that you support this event, as Bendigo Bank regularly donates money to the Galston
Community, especially Galston Public School. These funds ensure that students are provided with the
many additional facilities and equipment that are necessary in modern education.

P & C
Fathers Day Wrapping & Fathers Day Stall
We would like to say thank you to Nicola Bennett and her mum Sheila, Belinda Sharp, Tracy Lewer,
Tanya Koorey, Belinda Crofts, Gail Philp, Kathy Ballinger, Kristen Taylor, Emma MacDonald and
Michelle Carran for helping to prepare and wrap all the gifts for the Father's Day stall. Without their
assistance we would not have been able to have all the gifts ready. We would also like to say thank
you to Belinda Crofts, Karyn Buckle, Tracy Lewer, Georgina Hillman, Nicola Bennett, Kristen Taylor,
Gail Philp, Kathy Ballinger, Nicole Adams and Debbie Webb for helping out on the Father's Day
stall. The stall would not have gone ahead without them.
P & C Message to All Parents
Every September the P & C holds its AGM. All positions will be open for nomination. As some of the
current committee members have been in their positions for 2 or 3 years, we would like some new
parents to start thinking about the contribution they could make to our school. At the moment, the
students have the benefit of a P & C that is willing to provide all those extra events and resources but
the tables can turn very quickly without ongoing parental support.

A list of positions appears below. No experience is necessary for any position and you would have
the full support of the current members while you find your feet. Don’t think you aren’t up to the
job! It unleashes your hidden talents! There are many, many reasons to take on a committee position
including friendships, teamwork, satisfaction and most importantly, being a great role model for your
kids. You’d be surprised how proud the children are when their parents are helping out!
If you can’t take on a committee position, offer to help wherever you can. If we call for disco or
athletics carnival helpers, please be generous with a couple of hours of your time. Those same old
helpers will not be around forever so we need enthusiastic volunteers to continue the P & C’s great
work.
