I am on a Boeing 777 at 38,000 feet somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean on my way home from Dubai, UAE where I participated in teaching, along with Drs Dec Downey and Sam Ariaratnam, in a highly successful ISTT Masterclass. The class was a part of the 2009 Trenchless Middle East International Exhibition and Conference. The Masterclass was a first for ISTT. It featured technical presentations by the three of us on subjects ranging from new installation techniques, such as horizontal direction drilling and pipe bursting, to pipe rehabilitation, including pipe linings and pipeline condition assessment. These presentations were supplemented by presentations from trenchless manufacturing and contractors on real-world, case-studies of trenchless projects. The Dubai ISTT Masterclass had over 40 participants from several Middle Eastern countries including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Oman, as well as attendees from Russia, Bulgaria and the United Kingdom. The Masterclass format seems ideal for getting the message on Trenchless Technology to regions of the world where we have no affiliated societies and to affiliated societies that have a need for trenchless training but may not be in a position to host an ISTT No-Dig. The Masterclass format allows the training to be structured to meet local training needs. Masterclasses can be put together relatively quickly and, as the Dubai experience has shown us, it can be a very effective training tool. Our next big event in 2009 is the International No-Dig in Toronto. It is just around the corner – 29 March to 3 April. By the time this issue of Trenchless International is published, we will be co-hosting the No-Dig conference and exhibition with North American Society for Trenchless Technology. In addition to over 140 technical papers authored by representatives from 15 countries outside North America, the ISTT will recognise achievements in the trenchless industry including two product awards, and a project award. The Society will also make its fifth award of the ISTT Gold Medal at the 2009 No-Dig. The Gold Medal Award is the highest honour bestowed by the Society to an individual involved in promoting Trenchless Technology in-country and worldwide. ISTT’s 2009 educational activities do not end with the 2009 No-Dig. We will continue to pursue training opportunities with affiliates and in other regions of the world. We anticipate holding several more Masterclasses this year and in 2010. Before we know it, the 2010 No-Dig Conference and Exhibition will be upon us.
