****** ****** (SJSHʻ02, SHPʻ06)
7:00am: I wake up, get dressed in jeans
and a T-shirt, have a quick breakfast, and
drive (or bike, on Wednesdays) the two
blocks to school.
7:50am: Marine Biology class,
taught by Ms. Justine Walker (SJSHʻ95,
SHPʻ99). We just finished a unit on dunes
and the transfer of sand. Now weʼre
learning about toxic chemical pollutants
in the environment.
8:40am: American Diplomacy class,
taught by Mr. Barry Treseler. Right now
weʼre in our Vietnam War unit, working
toward Desert Storm.
9:20am: I jet over to 32 Sigall (our
assembly room) to prepare for the
weekly assembly.
9:25am: Grades 9-12 gather all
together for assembly. At the beginning,
I make announcements about student
council (because Iʼm the Student Body
President).
9:50am: Break time. I go to the Gator
Pit (our cafeteria) to get something to
eat—and chat with friends.
10:05am: Honors Short Stories class,
taught by Mr. Kermit Holderman. Today,
we discuss The Storm by Kate Chopin
and A Jury of Her Peers by Susan
Glaspell. This is my largest class by far,
with 18 students. Weʼre all seniors.
10:50am: Creating Literature
class, taught by Mr. Michael Peterson
(SJSHʻ92, SHPʻ96). Each team presents
their research on a certain form of poetry.
ACADEMIC SNAPSHOTS: Left,
in Diane Lovegrove’s time,
students worked in Study Hall
in complete silence. Below,
SHP teacher Michael Peterson
(far left, SJSH‘92, SHP‘96), leads
***** ****** (far right) and his
classmates in a discussion
My team is analyzing free form
open verse.
11:35am: My first free period. I
go to the library to do homework,
catch up on email, and work on my
essay for my college applications.
12:15pm: Lunch begins. I grab
food at the cafeteria and swing
by Mr. Mark Davisʼs room to ask
him to write a letter of recommendation
for my college applications.
Iʼm applying to film programs at
Loyola Marymount, USC, Emerson,
University of Oregon, and Chapman.
Iʼm applying to English programs at
Boston University, UC Santa Barbara,
and UC Irvine.
12:30pm: Lunch continues. I lead
the student council meeting in the Otto
Library. We discuss suggestions from
our new online suggestion box and
discuss the status of fine arts, athletics,
publicity, social events, service-learning,
curriculum, and diversity.
1:00pm: Meeting period. I go see
Valéria Piazza-Lunga to get her advice—
I need a tutor to help me prepare for the
SAT IIs (individual subject standardized
tests) in French language.
1:45pm: AP French class, taught by
Valéria Piazza-Lunga. We take a practice
AP exam, and a few class members
present their memorized one-minute
speeches. This is my smallest class, with
only 6 students.
2:30pm: My second free period. We
are allowed to leave campus if we have
the last period of the day free, so I go
to Posh Bagel with my friend Scott.
After eating, I work on my article for
the student newspaper The Heartbeat,
analyzing Michael Mooreʼs new movie
about the health care industry, Sicko.
3:30pm: Varsity soccer practice. We
COMEDY REHEARSAL: ****
******** (left, SHP‘06) at Kitsch
rehearsal with ***** ******
(SHP‘07)
start with five laps, then play keep-away
and do shooting drills, passing drills, and
scrimmaging.
5:00pm: Grab food at J and Jʼs
Hawaiian Grill with three friends from
the soccer team. We swing by my house,
since itʼs on the way to J and Jʼs.
5:30pm: Kitsch practice in the Sigall
building. Kitsch is a student-run comedy
improv group. There are 12 students
in the group. As team leader, I run the
group through warm-up games, mental
games, and rhyming games to get our
minds going. Then we launch into
improvisation.
7:00pm: Drive home and have dinner
with my mom, dad, and little brother.
8:00pm: Log on to mySHPnet.com
to see my homework assignments.
Work on my computer in my room until
11pm, with short breaks for IM-ing with
friends— we chat about homework and
life.
11:30pm: Go to bed, unless I have a
test the next day, in which case I stay up
a few more hours.
There are 116 boys and girls in my
graduating class.
