AUTOMATED BLOOD SAMPLER
for
LABORATORY ANIMAL RESEARCH
The equipment behind the science.

Automated blood sampling systems, properly deployed,
can increase the throughput of drug metabolism
and pharmacokinetics research groups. ABS systems
can also improve the accuracy and repeatability of sample
collection, minimize employee exposure to allergens and
reduce the stress on animals caused by handling and restraint.
THREE UNIQUE FEATURES of the INSTECH ABS
1 Undiluted Samples Verified
In-line sensors built into
the Instech ABS distinguish
between pure blood, diluted
blood and IV fluid. Before a
study begins, these sensors
ensure the system is set up
In-line sensor properly to deliver a pure
sample to the collection vial.
Without analytical guidance, the choice of where to
separate the diluted leading edge from the pure sample
is left to chance. (Visual discrimination is particularly
unreliable.) Trimming too much can lead to wasted
blood and overly long sample collection times; too
little, to diluted samples and inaccurate data.
“
In our laboratory,
one technician collects samples
from thirty-six animals simultaneously.
We are no longer a bottleneck in the drug
development process.
“
During a study the sensors serve a dual role. First,
they verify that blood arrives at the sensors at the
correct time in the sampling process. If not, the
culprit is often a catheter blockage; the system will
respond with an auto-retry routine and alert the user.
Second, the sensors measure the blood’s hematocrit,
providing real-time physiologic data.
saline trim volume pure pure blood
Other blood sampling systems either have no sensors
at all or monitor pressure during the process, a parameter
which is not directly related to sample integrity.
By comparison, the Instech ABS monitors the blood in
the line to ensure that the sampler is set up optimally
before a study, respond to blockages during the study
and provide data for analysis afterward.
passes through the in-line sensor

2 Direct Path
Peristaltic pumps in the Instech ABS move blood
samples directly from the animal to the vials in
the refrigerated fraction collector. This design has
several advantages over other systems that use a
syringe pump to pull the entire sample back into
reservoir tubing, then push it forward to the
collection vial: (1) the shorter, direct flow path
causes less mixing, which leads to smaller trim
volumes for undiluted samples and in turn to more
samples per animal; (2) sample cycle times are
faster (samples can be taken closer together); and
(3) sample volumes are not limited by the volume
of the reservoir tubing.
3 Flexibility
The Instech ABS is designed to work with a wide
range of animals, from mice and rats to large animals.
With mice, the ability to collect small volumes and
minimize waste is critical to avoid excessive hemodilution.
The ABS’s low loss mode returns the blood at
the leading edge, cutting wasted blood from 40-80µl
to just 3µl per sample. Instech Solomon’s tapered 1Fr
FunnelCath and low-torque swivels are also keys to
success with mice.
For large animal sampling, simply switch to larger
catheters and tubing sets. The ABS can even split
a single sample between two collection tubes
when blood is plentiful.
Even if you work only with rats, the Instech ABS is
remarkably flexible. An automated routine calibrates
the system for any catheter you choose. The sampler’s
small size and several mounting options give you many
choices for caging, including metabolic cages. Use a
two channel swivel for simultaneous sampling and
infusion or BP measurement, or even a five-channel
swivel for simultaneous sampling and microdialysis.
Automated sampling is an investment. Make the
most of it by choosing the most flexible sampler.
Precision Hardware
Integrated fraction collector
stores up to ten samples at
4-6°C. Wells can be reused as
initial samples are removed.
Five precision peristaltic pumps
move blood and IV fluids
in direct paths through the
system without valves.
Withdrawn blood is replaced
with IV fluid. Low ‘KVO’ rate
maintains catheter patency.
In-line sensors help ensure that
samples are taken as planned.
Fluid swivel allows continuous
one, two, or five channel fluid
access to a freely moving animal.
Use caging of your choice for a
familiar, low stress environment.
Slotted cage top slides off
for oral dosing.
Optional stand for rodent
sampling with integrated
counter-balanced lever arm
and IV bag holder. Other
mounting arrangements
are also possible.

Easy-to-Use Software
Control and monitor up to twelve samplers from a single PC
Program the sample times, volumes, rates, and other
study parameters for each sampler independently or
apply a single protocol to all samplers
Calibrate using automated routines that adapt the system
to the catheters and tubing sets that are best suited to your
animal model and experiment
