STUDENT SUPPORT Spotswood College prides itself on being a caring family school and therefore places a strong emphasis on Pastoral Care. • Hapu Leaders help their Hapu Group build a sense of belonging. Their focus is on helping students identify with our school and to develop their commitment to learning and achievement through high levels of attendance. • Deans at each year level guide and assist students. The Deans are also there for administrative purposes arranging options for students, but also to be a listening ear and to sort out problems. • We have recently restructured our student support structure. The foundation of our student support is the whanau or family group where one teacher meets each day with 14 students. This small group allows for the development of strong relationships and is the focus of the home/school/student partnership through which Individual Development Plans are created, monitored and refined over the five years students are with us. • The Careers Advisor is available to give advice on careers and to see that students have career pathways which is an essential aspect of the Individual Development Plan (IDP). • The Guidance Counsellors are available for students who wish to have personal counselling as well as for careers advice and University liaison. • Year 13 Peer Support Leaders are there to bridge the gap between Year 8 and Year 9. • The Resource Teachers of Learning and Behaviour (RTLB) monitor students’ progress and ensure they maximise their education opportunities. We have an excellent Careers Guidance Programme beginning at Year 9. Kiwi Careers is on-line and students are encouraged to use the career resources. Students also have the opportunity to participate in the many careers seminars. The partnership begins at enrolment and continues through the Whanau teacher, the Deans, through reports, Parent Teacher Interviews and Whanau Hui Meetings. Reports Issued 3 times per year February/March Year 9 Parent Information Night Interim Reports Report Interviews & Yr 11-13, IDPs May Mid Year Reports, Yr 11, Yr 12 & Yr 13 Report Interviews, Yr 11, Yr 12 & Yr 13 NEWSLETTERS These are vital to keep parents informed. They are issued to students three per term. They contain news of school events, activities and give information on forth-coming events. Newsletters are posted on the school website. PARENT GROUPS Board of Trustees Board of Trustees meet on the last Monday of each month at 7.15p.m at Spotswood College. All parents are invited to attend the meetings. Parents are also invited to contact the Chairperson, Mr Ross Dingle, with feedback or any queries or concerns. Komiti Maori Komiti Maori Meetings are held the 1st Tuesday of each month at Spotswood College in Whaitata at 5.30pm. This group builds a strong partnership between our school and our Maori community. Parent Teacher Association President: Mary Brewster Treasurer: Vincenza Clark The Spotswood College PTA committee meets in the School Boardroom on the 3rd Wednesday of each month in term time, with speakers on alternate months. All parents and caregivers are welcome to come along to hear what’s going on at the College, talk with the Principal and July Mid Year Reports, Yr 9 & 10 Report Interviews, Yr 9 & 10 August Senior Exams October End of Year Reports, Yr 11, 12 & 13 November Year 10 Exams December End of Year Reports, Yr 9 & 10 meet the teachers. You will have the opportunity to get to know other parents who also care about their children’s education and assist with the resourcing of the school. Band Boosters This enthusiastic group meets on the 1st Tuesday of each month in the Music Suite. This group works hard to support the school’s band programme by raising money for uniforms and trips. ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITIES A C A D E M I C O P P O R T U N I T I E S Spotswood College offers a wide range of academic opportunities in order to meet the learning needs and interests of students.
