• The world's first offshore wind farm CDM* project was<br />

validated by <strong>Bureau</strong> <strong>Veritas</strong> in China. We validated the wind<br />

farm according to UNFCCC** CDM criteria. This clean<br />

energy project will provide power to households in Shanghai<br />

and reduce carbon dioxide emissions. It is a landmark<br />

venture as China enters a new stage in its development of<br />

Launch of classification rules for naval submarines<br />

rules for naval submarines. We harnessed our expertise in<br />

writing classification rules for other types of vessels by<br />

adapting them to the needs of submarines. These new rules<br />

help protect crews, the environment and the Navy which<br />

Advanced electronics test center opens in the US<br />

• <strong>Bureau</strong> <strong>Veritas</strong> moved its electronics test laboratory into a<br />

newly built facility that’s three times the size of its previous<br />

building. The 60,000 square foot test center is the largest<br />

comparable electronics test laboratory in the eastern United<br />

States. It is equipped with advanced technology to provide<br />

testing and certification of virtually all electronics to help our<br />

clients introduce their products faster and at optimal<br />

First anniversary with Textile Consolidation Fund Egypt<br />

• <strong>Bureau</strong> <strong>Veritas</strong> and the Textile Consolidation Fund in Egypt<br />

celebrated the one year anniversary of their successful<br />

partnership by holding a client open day. Over 50<br />

participants attended the event, held in our textile laboratory<br />

in Alexandria. Representatives from both organizations<br />

spoke about the year’s achievements and the solutions<br />

Guidelines developed for ship’s fuel cells<br />

• <strong>Bureau</strong> <strong>Veritas</strong> established guidelines to regulate fuel cell<br />

technology on ships. These pioneering guidelines are the<br />

first regulations of their kind. Fuel cells generate efficient<br />

electrical power and are kinder to the environment than more<br />

traditional power sources. The technology is new and<br />

expected to grow in future which is why guidelines are<br />

required now.<br />

Exports to Algeria assessed<br />

• <strong>Bureau</strong> <strong>Veritas</strong> began carrying out conformity assessment<br />

and quality control for exports to Algeria, to ensure that all<br />

exported goods meet Algerian legal requirements.<br />

Documents and goods are verified and inspected before<br />

certificates are issued. The scope of work facilitates the<br />

process of exporting to Algeria.<br />

Environmental certification for Total Gabon<br />

• <strong>Bureau</strong> <strong>Veritas</strong> delivered ISO 14001 to Total Gabon for<br />

environmental management. The project involved the<br />

certification of several sites comprising eight new site<br />

certifications as well as two certification renewals. Now all<br />

Total Gabon's production and extraction activities are ISO<br />

14001 certified. This provides a guarantee that the oil<br />

company's environmental performance commitments are<br />

being permanently and rigorously monitored.<br />

• Supersized ships are a growing trend. They offer economies<br />

training program at Nestlé Waters North America. More than<br />

100 Nestlé employees were trained over seven weeks. The<br />

training focused on environmental, health & safety and food<br />

safety competencies, as part of ISO 22000 for food safety<br />

developed environmental initiatives based on local needs<br />

Iron and steel verified for Indonesia<br />

• The Group was selected to perform technical verification on<br />

iron and steel products being shipped to Indonesia from all<br />

countries excluding China, Japan, Korea and Singapore.<br />

Indonesian legal requirements state that the technical<br />

verification of these products must take place in the<br />

countries of export. The objective is to ensure that products<br />

comply with standards that protect the consumer and the<br />

environment while encouraging fair domestic trade<br />

conditions.<br />

Mobility made easier at Carrefour<br />

• <strong>Bureau</strong> <strong>Veritas</strong> and Carrefour began a project to give<br />

disabled people easier access to all Carrefour’s stores in<br />

France. New anti-discrimination laws in France state that all<br />

public places such as restaurants and shops must provide<br />

easy access for disabled people by 2015. Shopping at<br />

Carrefour will soon become a more comfortable experience<br />

for anyone with a disability or reduced mobility.<br />

Ship owners assisted with new recycling rules<br />

• <strong>Bureau</strong> <strong>Veritas</strong> developed and provided a full range of<br />

services to help its clients comply with the Convention for the<br />

Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships. This convention<br />

aims at ensuring that the ship recycling process does not<br />

pose any risk to health and safety or to the environment. The<br />

new recycling requirements address the growing concerns<br />

Clients guided through complexities of CPSIA<br />

• <strong>Bureau</strong> <strong>Veritas</strong> guided clients through the maze that is the<br />

Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA). This<br />

US law aims to increase consumer safety with more<br />

stringent or new requirements for consumer goods. It mainly<br />

covers children’s products such as toys but does include<br />

some adult products including home textiles. As the<br />

legislation became clarified and documented, we kept clients<br />

up to date on their obligations thus helping them to comply<br />

with the CPSIA and protect their brand.<br />

study will last two years and construction is due to start in<br />

Certification body accreditation for Toy Safety Program<br />

• <strong>Bureau</strong> <strong>Veritas</strong> was accredited by the American National<br />

Standards Institution as part of the Toy Industry<br />

Association’s Toy Safety Certification Program. The Group<br />

will be a full service provider for the program, including<br />

testing, hazard assessment, auditing and as a certification<br />

body. The program will help ensure the safety of children's<br />

toys produced anywhere in the world and sold in the United<br />

• AS/EN/JISQ 9100 are the internationally recognized quality<br />

system standards for the aeronautics industry. The<br />

clients on the standards’ evolution and put tools at their<br />

disposal, such as a calendar of implementation with<br />

deadlines for compliance. The updated rules focus on<br />

information security management to UNE EPM<br />

fourth mobile service provider in Colombia. The certification<br />
