Navigating cautiously
for opportunities
Editorial
Despite the volatility in global markets
and the fragility in the Eurozone, the mood at
the recent Pareto Oil and Offshore Conference in
Oslo, Norway was upbeat. The annual gathering is
Europe’s premier platform in the oil and offshore
business, where global industry players banter
views on the industry’s outlook, emerging trends
and challenges.
With renewed concerns over the safety of nuclear
energy arising from the Fukushima disaster, and
renewables still too expensive an option for
widespread use, fossil fuels are set to remain the
world’s main source of energy for the foreseeable
future.
Industry analysts at the Conference forecasted that
oil prices will continue to rise up to US$120/barrel in
2012, on the back of diminishing spare production
capacity. In tandem, spending on exploration and
production is also projected to hit US$818 billion in
2013, an increase by 60% from 2011 levels, with a
clear preference for newer equipment.
Gas is poised to become a more important part of
the energy mix, with consumption expected to grow
by 50% over the next 20 years, mostly in developing
countries. Heavy investment in gas infrastructure
including onshore, offshore as well as along the
LNG value chain will be needed.
Higher oil prices have also reignited interest in the
Arctic region, which accounts for an estimated
22% of undiscovered technically recoverable oil
and gas resources. Today, the region yields 15
billion barrels a day of oil equivalents, about 17%
of global production. Industry players estimate that
countries with Arctic reserves will invest around
US$596 billion for more field development over
the next 10 years.
Keppel Offshore & Marine is well placed to ride on
these trends. One driver of the surge in our newbuild
orders since 4Q 2010 is the bifurcation in day rates
for newer, higher specification rigs, with the bulk
being our proprietary designs.
To date, our new orders secured are close to
$8 billion, many of which are repeat orders from
longstanding customers. Our net orderbook as at
end August stands at $8.94 billion with deliveries into
2014 and several active enquiries in the pipeline.
Keppel Shipyard has a strong track record in the
major conversions including Floating Production
Storage Offloading vessels and Floating Storage &
Re-gasification Units, having successfully delivered
several complex projects including the world’s
first LNG floating storage and re-gasification
conversion.
Nor are we unfamiliar with the challenges of ice
conditions. Keppel Singmarine delivered the first
ice-breakers built in Asia. Since its establishment in
2008, the Keppel Offshore & Marine Technology
Centre has been researching new materials, systems
and processes for optimal rig operations and
performance in Arctic conditions.
Even as the global economy moves into troubled
waters, Keppel stands in good stead and has the
ability to spot emerging trends backed by a sterling
track record for delivery excellence and longstanding
partnerships with industry players nurtured over
many years.
Amidst the current market volatility, we have also
maintained our hallmark stringent risk management
processes across the Group to ensure that all
projects and investments are carefully assessed and
evaluated. These are lessons that resonate across
our different businesses.
Come what may, Keppelites will be vigilant and will
continuously scan the landscape to keep abreast
of new trends and work closely with customers
to innovate and develop value-added offerings, to
sustain the Group’s growth into the next decade.
4 Sustaining Growth Growth
First port project along Yangtze River
New venture by Keppel Telecommunications & Transportation to serve major route
in China.
The joint venture agreement was signed by Mr Pang Hee Hon (front right), CEO of Keppel Telecommunications & Transportation, and Mr Zhang Jianwei (front left), President of Sinotrans Ltd.
Keppel Telecommunications
& Transportation (Keppel T&T)
has signed a joint venture
agreement with Sinotrans
Ltd. to jointly develop and
operate a river port along
Yangtze River, serving Wuhu
City, Anhui Province and the
central region of China.
This marks Keppel T&T’s first
port project along Yangtze
River, which is a major trade
route in China.
The joint venture, Wuhu
Sanshan Port Co., Ltd (Wuhu
Sanshan), will be 50:50
held by Keppel T&T and
Sinotrans Ltd. respectively.
Wuhu Sanshan will have an
initial registered capital of
RMB280 million, injected
by the two shareholders in
equal proportion.
Apart from port operations,
Wuhu Sanshan also aims
to provide integrated
logistics services such
as international freight
forwarding, and other
third party logistics services.
This project is Keppel T&T’s
second partnership with
Sinotrans Group, with their
first being Lanshi Port, a
river port along the Pearl
River, in Foshan, Guangdong
Province.
Wuhu is experiencing strong economic
growth due to its high level of
industrial activities arising from
the attractive and business-friendly
environment. Therefore, Wuhu
Sanshan port’s strategic location at
the intersection of major industrial
hubs along the lower reaches of
Yangtze River will allow Keppel T&T
to take another important step in
our strategy to expand beyond
our base in southern China.
Sustaining Growth 5
The joint venture agreement
ceremony was graced by
Vice Mayor of Wuhu, Mr Lin
Hai, and the agreement was
signed between Keppel T&T
CEO, Mr Pang Hee Hon and
President of Sinotrans Ltd.,
Mr Zhang Jianwei.
Mr Pang said, “Wuhu is
e x p e r i e n c i n g s t r o n g
economic growth due to
its high level of industrial
activities arising from the
attractive and businessfriendly
environment.
Therefore, Wuhu Sanshan
port’s strategic location at
the intersection of major
industrial hubs along the
lower reaches of Yangtze
River will allow Keppel T&T
to take another important
step in our strategy to
expand beyond our base in
southern China.”
Wuhu City, the second
largest economy in Anhui
province, is located near
economic hubs, Shanghai
and Nanjing, the capital of
Jiangsu province. It is also an
important rail hub in eastern
China with five major railway
lines passing through it.
Consequently, this has
enabled Wuhu to capitalise
on its location for growth.
In 2010, Wuhu’s GDP
reached RMB110.86 billion,
an increase of 18.2% over
the previous year. Wuhu’s
GDP is projected to double
during China’s 12th Five-year
Economic Plan period (2011
to 2015), from RMB100
billion to RMB300 billion.
Major appliance makers
such as Midea Group and
Gree Electric Appliances
have set up their production
facilities in Wuhu. Carmaker,
Chery Automobile, is also
headquartered in Wuhu.
Consequently, big auto
parts makers like Siemens
VDO Automotive, Magneti
Marelli, a subsidiary of Italian
company Fiat Group, among
others, have also set up
facilities in Wuhu.
Earlier in January 2011,
Keppel T&T signed the
agreement for land use
rights with the Sino-
Singapore Tianjin Eco-City
Investment and Development
Co Ltd (SSTEC) for the
development and operation
of a green integrated
logistics distribution centre
in the Tianjin Eco-City,
marking Keppel T&T’s first
and significant step into
North China.
Spanning 2.8 hectares
and featuring more than
30,000 square metres
of moder n warehouse
space when completed,
the integrated logistics
distribution centre will be
wholly-owned and operated
by Keppel T&T.
Located at the intersection of major industrial hubs, Wuhu Sanshan port is being developed to serve Wuhu City, Anhui Province and the central
region of China
I n J u l y 2 0 1 1 , K e p p e l
T&T also signed a nonbinding
Memorandum of
Understanding with the
Construction Office of
Sino-Singapore Jilin Food
Zone to jointly develop a
logistics park to serve
the proposed Jilin (Sino-
Singapore) Food Zone. Both
parties are now conducting
the feasibility studies for the
proposed logistics park which
will serve all stakeholders in
the Food Zone. keppelite
Keppel Offshore & Marine delivered fourth EXL jack-up rig to Rowan.
Keppel AmFELS has
completed the delivery of
its fourth EXL jack-up rig
to a subsidiary of Rowan
Companies, Inc. (Rowan) with
a perfect safety record, four
months ahead of schedule
and within budget.
The jackup rig was
christened Rowan EXL-IV
on 10 September 2011 by
Ms Mary J. Dunaway and
Mr Matt Ralls, President &
CEO of Rowan, said, “This
latest EXL jackup rig is a
key addition to our fleet of
high-specification rigs and
will enable us to further
grow our offshore drilling
business. We are seeing
improved demand for our
rigs, especially for high-spec
jack-ups, which are playing
an increasingly important
role in the offshore drilling
market. Keppel AmFELS has
once again delivered another
quality rig to us on time and
within budget.”
Mr Michael Dowdy, VP of
Engineering, Rowan, added,
“Delivering the Rowan
EXL-IV in record time is a
testament to the efficiency
and diligence of the team
in Keppel AmFELS. The
people on this project have
performed so well that you
are delivering EXL-IV four
months ahead of schedule
and with zero lost-time
incidents during the entire
program – that’s quite an
accomplishment.”
Besides the four EXL rigs
latest of these, the Rowan
Norway, was delivered in
July 2011.
Mr G.S. Tan, President of
Keppel AmFELS, said, “We
are pleased to be able to
deliver on our promises to
Rowan. Rowan’s confidence
i n o u r p r o d u c t s a n d
execution capabilities has
led them to entrust almost
US$2 billion worth of projects
to Keppel to date. This latest
delivery is another example
of the excellent teamwork
we have built with Rowan
and a demonstration of
Keppel’s strong engineering,
construction and project
management expertise.
“We believe in being Near
Market, Near Customer, and
Keppel AmFELS delivered the Rowan EXL-IV ahead of schedule and with zero lost-time
incidents
Keppel AmFELS’ strategic
location in the Gulf of Mexico
has enabled us to develop
a close relationship with
Rowan and one of its primary
operating markets, to better
serve its customers.”
The ABS-classed EXL jack-up
design is an enhancement of
the LeTourneau Super 116E
model. With a leg length
of 477 ft and hook load
capacity of up to 2,000,000
lbs, the Rowan EXL-IV
employs state-of-the-art
technology to drill highpressure,
high-temperature
and extended-reach wells
worldwide. The rig is
capable of operating in water
depths of 350 ft or more,
and drilling to a depth of
40,000 ft.
company in Tianjin Eco-City,
TEC-Keppel focuses on the
investment, development,
design, construction,
operation, maintenance
and consultancy for DHCS,
Tri-generation and other
utility services in Tianjin
Eco-City.
DHCS is an installation of
a centrally chilled water
and hot water processing
plant to serve a cluster of
buildings for their heating
and air-conditioning needs.
The plant distributes chilled
water and hot water to
its customers’ buildings
through a network of pipes.
As most of the equipment
is located at the centralised
plant, customers can free-up
spaces that would otherwise
be used for the conventional
air-conditioning systems.
DHCS is an energy-efficient
system and therefore will
contribute to the Eco-City in
meeting its key performance
indicators. keppelite
8 Sustaining Growth
On the Alpha track
Alpha Investment Partners
(Alpha), Keppel Land’s
wholly-owned real estate
fund management arm, has
announced the first closing
of its Alpha Asia Macro
Trends Fund II (AAMTF II).
T h e A A M T F I I r a i s e d
a commitment of
o v e r U S $ 4 6 0 m i l l i o n
($556 million) as at end June
2011 from eight institutional
investors including pension,
endowment and sovereign
wealth funds and fundof-funds.
The fund will be
opened for further closings
with investors over the next
12 months.
Following the success of the
US$1.2 billion ($1.6 billion)
Alpha Asia Macro Trends Fund
(AAMTF) that was incepted
in 2007, AAMTF II carries a
similar investment mandate
as AAMTF and focuses on
executing proven profitable
real estate strategies that
leverage prominent macro
trends in Asia.
The target markets for the
AAMTF II are Singapore,
Japan, Taiwan, South Korea
and Hong Kong, as well as
the fast emerging markets
o f C h i n a , I n d i a a n d
Vietnam.
“Building on the strong
performance of the AAMTF,
the successful closing of the
AAMTF II reflects the
confidence of institutional
investors in Alpha’s proven
track record.
“AAMTF’s return to-date has
exceeded 26% per annum
since inception. The 2007
vintage funds have generally
recorded poor performance,
with many affected by the
global financial crisis, but
we were able to significantly
outperform our peers and
o u r a b s o l u t e r e t u r n
benchmark.
“Having the discipline not
to invest too early and the
courage to act when the
markets were down in
2009 has helped AAMTF’s
performance. Similarly,
today’s environment has
become more uncertain and
whilst we have to be more
cautious in our approach,
we expect to see some good
opportunities emerging
in our target markets for
AAMTF II,” said Mr Loh
Chin Hua, MD of Alpha.
Riding on the back of its first
closing, AAMTF II has made
its maiden investment by
entering into an agreement
to acquire a 142-room
boutique Central Park Hotel
in Hong Kong for HK$515
million ($80 million).
Central Park Hotel is located
along Hollywood Road on
Hong Kong Island, within
walking distance to an
MTR station and close to
the business district in The
Located along Hollywood Road on Hong Kong Island, Central Park Hotel is maiden acquisition
of AAMTF II
Central. The immediate
vicinity includes the Soho
and Noho districts as well
as Lan Kwai Fong, which
are popular with both
tourists and locals due to
its wide array of dining and
entertainment options. The
hotel has benefitted from the
influx of mainland Chinese
tourists to Hong Kong and
the current occupancy is
around 90%.
W ith AAMTF II, Alpha
currently manages five
funds with gross assets
under management of about
US$7.3 billion ($8.8 billion)
when fully invested.
Meanwhile, Alpha has also set
up a new office in Shanghai
and appointed Mr Eric Goh
Lai Soon as CEO of China
Operations. Its extension
into China comes on the
back of two deals closed
Innovation rewards
Safety thrives on ideas
and innovation, as Keppel
management and employees
continually find ways to raise
the Group’s safety quotient.
This was demonstrated at
the 14th Convention for
Workplace Safety and Health
Industry organised by the
Association of Singapore
Marine Industries (ASMI)
Keppel FELS and Keppel Singmarine clinched Silver and Bronze Awards for its Safe Intelligent Trolley (pictured right) and Friendly Puncher
projects at the 14th Convention for WSH Innovations organised by ASMI
trolley aims to minimise risk
and safety incidents in the
yard by reducing hand and
finger injuries.
“It also helps to reduce
occupational health hazards,
such as back injuries suffered
by workers. Ultimately, we
hope that this trolley will help
to cultivate a safe working
habit when handling and
transferring materials.”
Besides saving time and
costs, the trolley enables
the yard to adopt a more
automated mode of handling
materials and facilitates
safety in the process.
As for the Friendly Puncher
project, it has proven to
reduce the risk of finger
simple and innovative device
which has received positive
response from end users.
Practice makes perfect
In light of the strategic
importance of crisis
communications, Keppel
C o r p o r a t i o n ’s G r o u p
Corporate Communications
and Group Human Resources
departments have rolled
out a series of crisis media
training for the Group’s
spokespersons.
The trainings are aimed at
equipping the spokespersons
with effective media-handling
skills, and familiarising them
with the typical media
scenarios that may play out
during a crisis.
Following a successful
workshop held in August
this year for a group of
overseas management
personnel from Keppel
Offshore & Marine, another
workshop was recently held
for nine senior management
representatives from Keppel
Integrated Engineering (KIE)
on 13 September 2011.
Mr Ho Kuen Loon, CFO
of KIE commented, “We
were taught how to sharpen
our media interview skills,
bearing in mind today’s new
media landscape and an
increasingly internet-savvy
audience.
“The lessons are very useful
and I would recommend
such workshops to be
conducted on a regular
basis, so that we are able to
assimilate the skills learnt,
and be more prepared in a
real-life crisis situation.”
Participants took part in
recorded role-plays, and
practised how they
would speak and present
themselves to media during
a crisis situation. They were
also guided on preparing a
media statement, and on
fielding simulated scenarios
such as ambush interviews,
press conferences, and
TV interviews.
Commenting on the role-play
exercises, Mr Tan Jui Chai,
DGM of KIE Group Services,
shared, “One of the most
challenging aspects is reacting
promptly and appropriately
to a fast-evolving situation.
In this regard, the workshop
was relevant and practical
in its approach, and was
able to closely simulate such
an environment. This gave
us the opportunity to roleplay
and put into practice
the various media-handling
techniques learnt, to adapt
to different scenarios.”
Mr Joseph Ng, CEO of
Keppel DHCS, added, “It
would beneficial for us to be
ingrained with a ‘prepared
mindset’, and learn more
about practical approaches in
managing operations during
a crisis. Most business units
at Keppel are familiar with
business continuity planning,
and an effective crisis
communications strategy is
the glue that binds together
the elements of a business
continuity plan.” keppelite
Pride of Passage
Every building tells a story or
two. Few, however, can do it
from a vantage of 150 years.
The Ocean Financial Centre is
a history-making landmark.
It is the fourth in the lineage
to rise on the same site
following redevelopment –
in 1864, 1923 and 1974,
each time at the watershed
of Singapore’s economic
development.
The book, PRIME – Pride
of Passage, written by
Dr K K Seet, a lecturer at
the National University of
Singapore, begins at the
present building then retraces
its steps to the previous three
incarnations. Throughout
the narrative, Dr K K Seet
reinforces the notion that
Ocean Building has remained
prime with each incarnation,
whether in terms of its site
and immediate environs,
its facilities and features, or
its architectural innovations
as commercial, urban and
public space.
The first two-storey
Ocean Building was built in
1864, the same year in which
the road Collyer Quay was
built on reclaimed land and
was an important landing
point for the unloading and
storage of goods transported
along the Singapore River.
It was replaced by the second
five-storey Ocean Building
in 1923, which housed the
headquarters of the Straits
Steamship Company. The
third 28-storey Ocean
Building, built in 1974,
was one of Singapore’s first
skyscrapers at 390-foot
tall designed by architect
Swan & Maclaren, which
also housed many other
financial institutions,
shipping companies and
air agencies such as HSBC,
Drew & Napier, Ernst &
Young, ANZ, Citibank and
Cathay Pacific.
Today, Collyer Quay and
Raffles Place area have
also evolved together
with Singapore’s growth
as a financial hub. It has
transformed to become a
centre for financial activities,
with shipping activities
relocated to other parts of
Singapore. The tenants in the
new Ocean Financial Centre
have similarly changed –
replaced by major financial
institutions, law firms and
multi-national corporations,
to remain relevant to the
community.
In fact the new name
Ocean Financial Centre,
reconciles the past and the
future. While retaining the
word ‘Ocean’ in association
with its previous incarnations
and association with the
maritime, the new christening
of ‘Financial Centre’
reinforces the building’s
role in the economic
development of Singapore to
become a financial hub and
preferred business address of
multi-national companies.
keppelite
The history of Ocean Financial Centre is intertwined not only with Keppel’s
own but that of many of its corporate tenants, both local and international,
who have thrived together with Singapore.
Ocean Financial Centre has always stood tall amongst some of our city’s
best-known and cherished landmarks which over the years, have come to
represent Singapore and her growth story.
after its three stakeholders,
namely, the investors in its
funds, its shareholders and
its team.
Highlights from the engaging
questions and answers
session:
Q: What were some
challenges you
faced when starting
Alpha in 2003
A: It was the first time I
was involved in starting up
a company from scratch.
The start-up of Alpha also
coincided with the SARS
epidemic. We had a tough
time. The most difficult part
was getting our first investor
to sign up, but sometimes,
it may not be bad to start
a business in bad times. If
you succeed, you will not be
easily daunted in future.
It was important that I had
a group of like-minded
c o l l e a g u e s w h o w e re
motivated, hungry and excited
by what we were doing. We
must continue to have this
hunger and motivation in
order to continue to grow
the business.
Q: How does the
current negative
outlook for the
global economy
affect Alpha Has
that changed Alpha’s
investment strategy
A: At Alpha, we are now
more cautious but we do
not view this as a time to
stop investing. There are
definitely opportunities
but we need to evaluate
them carefully. As a fund
manager, it is very important
to constantly check our
assumptions to make sure
that they are right.
Experience counts too and
a number of us have gone
through several crises in the
past. With an experienced
team, we can better grasp
Young Keppelites getting insights from Mr Loh Chin Hua, MD of Alpha Investment Partners
when the time is to be
cautious and wait on the sidelines
and when the time is to
be bold and opportunistic.
Q: Alpha is
headquartered in
Singapore. How do
you make overseas
investment analysis
and decisions
A: We have strong locals
on the ground, with wide
e x p e r i e n c e a n d g o o d
connections in local markets.
In any business, people are
usually the greatest assets.
This is definitely true of
ours. We need to create
a fun, challenging and
rewarding environment that
The leadership series
attracts, grows and retains
talents. This emphasis on
grooming and developing
talents is the same across the
Keppel Group.
In the team, many of us have
lived and worked in different
countries and that equips
us with an international
perspective and global
mindset needed to provide
innovative solutions to meet
our clients’ needs.
If there are opportunities in
future for you to take up a
posting overseas, do not shy
away from it and take it as an
opportunity to grow. keppelite
position in the second stage
of Leg 1 of the transatlantic
Congratulating the crew
“On the very first leg, our
Singapore yacht has flown
our flag high with the crew
displaying courage, tenacity,
commended his crew, “I
think we had a really strong
team spirit beforehand but
the way the crew really pulled
together and dealt with
the situation immediately
afterwards and their Can-Do!
attitude astounded me. It has
really gone a long way to
galvanise what was already
a strong team spirit.”
On Singapore’s tactics,
Skipper Ben said, “Our tactics
are pretty straightforward
which is always try to sail
the shortest distance but
there’s a slight complication
in this leg with the South
Atlantic High ... so we will
get a bit of south in, pick up
the wind and once we are
clear to scoot around the
bottom edge of the High,
Fine balancing act
Successfully juggling the demands of work and school, Teh Swee Kheng, Project
Engineer from Keppel FELS graduated as one of the top students of her class and
was Valedictorian of the Mechanical Engineering Faculty at the National University
of Singapore. We learn more about this driven young Keppelite.
Why did you choose to
further your studies
Prior to my part-time course,
I had worked at Keppel FELS
for two years and enjoyed
my work immensely.
I wanted to delve deeper
into engineering work,
to be involved in larger
challenges and take on
further responsibilities; to
do so, I needed to expand my
knowledge and skills.
I chose to study part-time
as I felt that my experiences
at work would help me
understand what was taught
in school. At the same time,
I have seen other Keppelites
successfully balance work
and school, and was inspired
to try the same.
What is your experience
of juggling work and
studies
Balancing work and studies
requires dedication and
self-discipline. Instead of
unwinding after work,
I had to revv myself up
after a long day to attend
classes and complete school
assignments. In addition,
I had to spend many
weekends doing revisions.
Over the last four years, there
have been times when I felt
quite disappointed about
Former President of Singapore His Excellency S.R. Nathan congratulates Keppel FELS Project Engineer Teh Swee Kheng on her successful
graduation from the Mechanical Engineering Faculty at the National University of Singapore
having to turn down social
events to spend more time
on my school work. During
such times, I would motivate
myself by thinking about the
small rewards I would give
myself after the challenging
period is over.
I have been blessed with
supportive managers and
colleagues. They were
soundboards for bouncing
ideas for my assignments
and facilitated my leaving
work on-time for classes. I
have been able to attend
classes with peace of mind
because I know that my
colleagues have my back.
What tips do you have
for others about to
further their studies,
especially on a part-time
basis
I recommend that they
actively form study groups.
Studying in groups helped
me stay motivated and sped
up my learning of tough
topics. I also suggest revising
regularly – by doing so, even
when work commitments
increased close to or during
my examinations period,
I was still adequately prepared
to take the tests.
Finally, I would urge everyone
to take good care of their
health. Staying fit has helped
me to stay mentally and
physically ‘fresh’ for my
classes and work. keppelite
Winning tales
competition last month,
the winners share on how
they embrace the Fish!
Philosophy at work in this
issue of Keppelite. keppelite
Bitesize takeaways:
• Adopt a positive attitude at work which can rub off on
others and create a happier and productive environment
• Choose to have fun
• Be there for others
• When it comes to customers and colleagues – make
their day!
First-prize
Benjamin Xia, Keppel FELS
“The Fish! Philosophy reminds us that adopting a
positive attitude at work can rub off on others and
create a happier and productive environment. If we
spend most of our waking hours working, we ought
to maximise our battery life by enjoying and being
energised by it.
“The choice is ours to have fun or be miserable at
work. We can choose to savour every moment and be
there for others whenever they need us. With this
attitude, I have been able to build good relationships
with my colleagues, and this enables us to better
synergise our strengths as a team.”
Winners of the Go Fish! Group-wide photography competition: (from left) Roy Tan, Benjamin
Xia and Lynnette Leong
Second-prize
Roy Tan, Keppel Corporation
“At work, my colleagues and I always take time
out of our busy schedules to catch up and help one
another. Communication is key in our line of work
and building good relationships creates a positive
environment for me to embrace work with a smile
every day.
“It’s the small gestures – from warm greetings to
having coffee together – that our colleagues and
customers appreciate, which in turn makes our
work much easier. We don’t get the chance to do
it as often as we would like to but it’s a fish we’re
keen to catch.”
Third-prize
Lynnette Leong, Keppel Bay Sailing Academy
“How many people actually enjoy what they do
at work Well, I do. I get to meet strangers from
all walks of life, learn to sail together and become
friends.
“We experience all the highs and lows of being out
at sea, from taking the helm and learning the ropes
on sunny days to overcoming seasickness and other
perils in stormy conditions.
“Everyone learns to work together to get the
boat quickly and safely to the destination, and
we always end each journey discovering so much
about ourselves and appreciating the simple things
in life we take for granted. It is no wonder that our
customers keep telling us that we have the best jobs
in the world!”
sharp cultural acumen and
understanding of local ways
of living and working.
Consequently, Raymond
has had to learn to pick up
nuances in conversing with
the locals.
Raymond shared, “A lot
of meaning can get lost in
translation and one always
needs to remain culturally
sensitive and open-minded
to fully comprehend what
locals are conveying or
receiving from you. It takes
patience to learn but with
the help of local friends and
colleagues, it is not difficult
to pick up common phrases
and lingos.”
Indeed, after three years of
‘going local’, Raymond has
developed a rich network
of friends and associates,
as well as expatriates he
had met through work
and church, integrating
as well as endearing him
to the local fabric of the
community.
In a city where bicycles
have for decades
remained a major means
of transport, a treasured
tradition and a means
of livelihood, it is little
wonder that Raymond has
also gone local in finding
his way around HCMC,
choosing to spend his free
time exploring the city on
two wheels.
Bearing witness to the
changing face of the city has
given Raymond the indelible
satisfaction of also being
a part of its progress and
positive transformation.
He added, “I am never
bored here because there
are many challenges and
little time to surmount
them, so I am kept on
my toes at all times. It is
mentally stimulating!”
As he and his family makes
Vietnam their current home,
Raymond’s upbeat attitude
certainly helps him to meld
amidst a people that are
known to be optimistic
and full of hope about
their future. keppelite
Teamwork makes headway
As every weathered sailor knows, smooth sailing begins with good planning and
teamwork. To chart Keppel Volunteers’ path of progress for the future, its core
members took to the high seas for a team-building event recently.
Working shoulder-to-shoulder to tack and trim the sails, Keppel Volunteers bonded over teamwork, open communication and careful planning
Led by the Keppel Bay Sailing
Academy, members of Keppel
Volunteers set off in two
yachts from Marina at Keppel
Bay in Singapore for Nongsa
Point Marina & Resorts in
Batam, Indonesia.
The sail was part of Keppel
Volunteers’ annual Work
Plan and Retreat session.
Taking turns to helm
the yachts and working
shoulder-to-shoulder to
tack and trim the sails, the
group was reminded of the
importance of teamwork,
open communication and
careful planning.
Regular coordinator and
participant of Keppel
Volunteer events,
Xu Youqing, Engineer, Keppel
Energy, said, “The yacht
race was a good reminder
of how small coordination
lapses can lead to teams
quickly falling behind.
“The exercise also trains
our observational skills and
capacity to think ahead – the
teams literally had to read
and anticipate changes in the
wind, waves and clouds. The
principles of many of these
lessons are transferable to
our working life.”
As a first-time participant at
a Keppel Volunteers event,
Karin Xiao, Senior Executive,
Investor Relations and
Research at Keppel Land,
shared “I was truly humbled
by the passion and fervour
displayed by the volunteers.
They have definitely inspired
me to spur other Keppelites
to join in this meaningful
social mission.
“I was certainly not mentally
prepared for a rough ride
on this sailing trip. The
6-hour retreat cum mini
expedition opened my eyes
to the wonders of true team
work and what a strong
team spirit can do. Through
clear communication and
well-coordinated efforts,
both teams managed to
battle unfavourable weather
conditions and bring all
members safely to shore.”
Over in Batam, the group
engaged in robust discussions
on some of the challenges
faced by Keppel Volunteers
as well as brainstormed on
areas of improvements.
Active volunteer Jacob
Genauer, Project Engineer,
Keppel Shipyard, said,
“Through this session, I got
to meet and interact with
many dynamic individual who
have put aside much of their
personal time for community
service projects. Their
enthusiasm is contagious – I
am eager to play a larger role
in Keppel Volunteers and help
drive social projects.”
Evelyn Liew, Vice-Chairperson
of Keppel Volunteers and
Human Resources Assistant,
Keppel Corporation,
summarised the success of
the session, “We not only
outlined steps to take Keppel
Volunteers forward, but also
forged closer bonds with
one another. With all hands
on deck, I am confident that
we will be able to make a
meaningful difference to
the lives of our fellow
Keppelites as well as the
Wat fun times in Cambodia
The temples (known as
Cambodia, world-famous
architectural wonders, did
not fail to inspire awe in
members of the Keppelite
Recreation Club (KRC) on
their recent visit from 2 to
5 September 2011.
43 members participated
in the four-day, three-night
overseas trip, organised by
KRC to encourage bonding
between Keppelites.
At the first stopover at the
magnificent Angkor Wat,
tour guides shared on the rich
history and stories behind the
structures, adding depth and
colour to the experience.
The group then headed to
the capital city of Phnom
Penh where they relished
scenes of the Mekong
River as well as visited the
Independent Monument and
Victoria Park. At the Russian
market, they hunted for
souvenirs and bargained to
their heart’s content.
At the end of the holiday,
the group returned home
recharged and with fond
memories, countless photos
and new friendships. Time
spent travelling together
was the perfect platform for
them to bond and to get to
know one another better.
For the organisers, the
satisfaction from making
the journey a reality for
fellow colleagues was
most rewarding.
“It was a fulfilling experience
for me to organise the trip
for my fellow colleagues to
bond through travelling and
most importantly, to know
they have all enjoyed it.”
shared Loh Li Ling, Human
Resources Executive from
Keppel Shipyard who was
one of the organisers of
the trip.
“There were lots of
interaction during the trip
and many gave feedback
and suggestions on how
KRC can further meet the
recreational needs of its
members. Many have also
expressed interest to join
Going green for the community
As part of Keppel Land’s commitment to contribute to communities where it operates, a winter clothes collection drive was organised for the needy in the villages in Yunnan, China
Winter is the harshest time
of the year, but the Investor
Relations and Research
(IR&R) team from Keppel
Land, which takes care of
the outreach programmes
in the Corporate Social
Responsibility (CSR)
committee, turned up the
heat with warm hearts.
Over a period of two weeks,
Keppel Land staff as well as
tenants at Ocean Financial
Centre donated their winter
clothing for the needy in
the villages in Yunnan,
China.
Some of the staffs at
Keppel Land will also be
pitching in to help transport
these clothing during their
business trip to Kunming,
China, using their excess
luggage weight allowance.
The effort was driven in
collaboration with Bless
China International, a nongovernment
organisation
t h a t w o r k s w i t h t h e
disadvantaged in southwest
China.
This is not the first time
Keppel Land has worked with
Bless China International.
Over the years, Keppel Land’s
Spring City Golf and Lake
Resort has been supporting
their healthcare initiative in
Kunming, by facilitating and
sponsoring foreign doctors
on voluntary medical mission
to perform cataract surgery
for villagers who could not
afford or were too weak
to travel to the nearest city
for treatment.
This is part of Keppel Land’s
commitment to impact
and contribute positively to
communities where it operates.
As part of World Car-Free
Day and Green Consumer
Day on 22 and 28 September
2011 respectively, IR&R
also organised a fun and
educational online pop quiz
for Keppel Land staff to learn
about the options of using
greener forms of transport
and practising the 3Rs of
reduce, reuse and recycle.
USB thumbdrives labelled
‘Go Green with Keppel Land’
were given to staff who
submitted the most number
of correct answers.
In addition, 340 pairs of
movie tickets were also given
to staff to watch ‘School Days
with a Pig’ on 29 September
2011. The award-winning
Japanese film highlights
the theme of responsible
consumerism through a class
of sixth graders who raise a
piglet and are faced with the
inevitable question of what
to do with it when the school
term ends.
Ms Serena Toh, DGM of
IR&R, shared “Keppel Land
believes in promoting
environment sustainability
and contributing to the
community. We hope to
raise awareness that we live
in an interconnected world,
Bridging bonds
To strengthen the bonds
between Keppel Volunteers
and its adopted charity,
the Association for Persons
volunteers to cultivate a
The half-day workshop took
place in Tanglin School,
one of the five special
needs institutions under the
auspices of APSN, under the
professional guidance of APSN
psychologist and teachers.
The training, participated
by 13 volunteers, included
a series of games, from
answering questions
with non-master hands
to comprehending nonlinear
texts with loud and
jarring music playing in the
background. These exercises
enabled participants to
have an impression of the
learning obstacles faced by
MID students and to gain an
insight into the condition.
“Learning disabilities are
often misconstrued in society.
Through the workshop,
Keppel Energy, shared, “We
can achieve more by treating
APSN students as equal
The workshop enriched the
volunteers’ understanding of
MID, as well as a profound
respect for APSN’s invaluable
work and a renewed sense
of purpose.
Jacob Genauer, a Project
built by Keppel.
Such floating cranes of
immense lifting powers
are extremely critical to
the efficient operation of
shipbuilding and offshore
construction work and have
been in great demand to
support the growing needs
of industry.
Mr Lee Tai Kwee, President
of Keppel Nantong said,
“Keppel and Asian Lift have
a winning partnership that
has been instrumental to the
success of both companies.
We are proud to continue
this mutual growth with the
construction of the world’s
largest sheerleg crane.
“Keppel Nantong has
established a track record
in specialised shipbuilding,
some of which are harbour
tugs and anchor handling
supply vessels for Smit. The
construction of Asian Hercules
III adds another dimension to
the versatility and capabilities
of the yard, and we look
forward to delivering it on
time, within budget and in a
safe manner.”
Upon delivery, Asian Hercules
III’s first assignment will be in
Singapore. She will serve the
offshore oil and gas as well
as marine markets in South
East Asia. The vessel will
measure 106 metres (m) long
and 52m wide with a hook
height of at least 172m.
Mr John Chua, GM of Asian
Lift added, “We believe that
Asian Hercules III will play
an important role in serving
the industry where heavy lift
activities are essential. South
East Asia is an important
market, especially with the
high volume of offshore
and marine projects being
contracted here. With the
weight of modules and other
components increasing,
Asian Hercules III will be
well placed to meet the
needs of the market for
greater lifting capacity.
“Having worked with Keppel
for many years, we are
confident of Keppel Nantong’s
ability to successfully deliver
this crane and add to our
highly-capable fleet.”
Keppel Nantong Shipyard’s construction of Asian Hercules III will add to Asian Lift’s formidable fleet of floating cranes
Keppel Nantong is
currently undertaking the
construction of six 45-tonne
bollard pull twin-screw
Azimuth Stern Drive (ASD)
tugboats for Keppel Smit
Towage. They are being
built to Keppel Offshore &
Marine’s proprietary design,
developed by its technology
unit, Marine Technology
Development. keppelite
