From the Manager
A New Year... A Time to Reflect
Terry DaSilva
Community Manager
This season is a time to take stock; a
time to reflect on the events of the past
year and to make resolutions for the
New Year ahead. We left behind the
year 2007 and are preparing ourselves,
with a new resolute determination, to
create a better future for ourselves and
our community. My mother always said,
“What’s past is past and don’t look back;
just look forward and convince yourself
to do better the next year.” I did not
agree with that philosophy and questioned it. If we don’t look
back, how will we know if we made mistakes or could have
done better I believe we should look back and remember what
we have or have not accomplished and then ask if we would do
exactly the same again or would we do it differently.
The lessons of the past play an important role in bringing
together a community with so many different backgrounds
and nationalities. History and past lessons, woven together,
can effectively address the challenges and opportunities
ahead. To do this we need to draw from our history the timeless
values that tell about the way we should relate to people
and circumstances. Fairness and compassion, justice and tolerance;
these are the landmarks from the past which can guide
us through the years ahead.
It is a modest, but important step for this community and
management to maintain the efforts that need to be exerted
in order to build our community to its fullest potential. One
true indicator of healthy management is turnovers. We are
fortunate; there was only one turnover in Administration
since RMI started managing Sun City Anthem in February
2006.
For many, the future is a source of excitement, hope and challenge.
For others, the future is a cause of anxiety. I do not
think that we should be over-anxious. We can make sense of
the future - if we understand the lessons of the past. Winston
Churchill said that “the further backward you look, the further
forward you can see.”
The future is now! Enjoy it! ♦
Welcoming 2008
Over the past six
months I’ve talked about
where we’ve been and
where we are. As we ring in
the New Year, it seems
appropriate to talk about
where we’re going in 2008 since many of the
projects initiated by the Board in the last six
months will come to fruition in the New Year.
In August we began discussions with our
attorney to bring our CC&Rs and By Laws
into compliance with NRS116 and other applicable
laws that have changed since we were
incorporated. Our attorney identified eight
areas where changes are needed, and an attorney
who specializes in CC&R’s is preparing
new wording for us. A Board vote is needed to
bring our governing documents into legal compliance
— unlike other changes which require
approval of a majority of the residents in some
instances — so look for this item on the Board
Agenda early in 2008. A similar review will
need to be done following the 2009 Legislative
session to keep our governing documents compliant
with subsequent legislative action.
Late in 2007 the Board contracted for a
“look back” at our reserve rquirements as of
Transition because of the inadequacy of the
2005 Reserve Study. A group of residents
made up of members of our Finance and
Property and Grounds Committees and the
Board will review this report and determine
the adequacy of reserve funding as of
Transition. If deficiencies are found we will go
back to the developer to make sure they are
corrected.
Over the past six months the current Board
established direct communications with all levels
of government, and has gained their agreement
that only the Board, not the developer
or an oversight committee, can speak for Sun
City Anthem. This relationship has already
served us well when first BLM and then the
City announced plans for properties neighboring
Sun City Anthem. We will remain vigilant
as BLM increases their effort to sell properties
on our end of the valley so that future use of
these properties allows us to maintain our quality
of life. The Board will continue to provide
leadership in representing your concerns to all
outside agencies, and we have already initiated
discussions with the Boards of other associations
in this end of the valley to make sure our
common interests are known to our representatives
on the local and national level. In
January we will take the first step when we host
a meeting of the boards of the five Anthem
communities to plan for the 2008 transition of
the Anthem Council.
For too long Trumpets has been the darkest
corner of our community, but we plan to
have the lights back on soon. The Trumpets
Working Group has already heard from several
potential new operators of our restaurant, with
the hope that we will have a new operator
selected by the end of March. This process is
challenging because we are not just looking for
a tenant to lease the space; instead we expect to
sign a contract with a restraunteur who will
provide services compatible with our dining
and lifestyle preferences while meeting our
financial expectations.
Late in November the City approved the
plans for Rec3 and Pulte is eager to break
ground. The Board is currently reviewing the
final design and hopes to resolve the issue of the
co-gen funds in time to approve the plans at the
January Board Meeting. We hope to see you all
Sun City Anthem • January 2008 7

oard President
at the official “groundbreaking” ceremony to be scheduled
as soon as the Board gives Pulte the green light.
With completion planned for late 2008, this will be a
welcome amenity for all SCA residents, especially those
southeast of Anthem Parkway.
In 2007 we cleaned and painted the information
booth on Anthem Parkway to create a post for our
Security Patrol and HPD. Security Patrol volunteers
currently staff the building for 2-4 hours per day, and
Pet Club members will join them in the booth on
Fridays, but additional volunteers are needed so that we
can expand the hours the booth is staffed. If you’d like
to volunteer for security patrol, but don’t want to drive,
this is a great opportunity to contribute a few hours a
week to help the community.
In 2008 we will introduce a new webiste for Sun
City Anthem. Hosted by RMI as part of our management
contract and already included in the fee we pay
RMI, the new site is more “HOA-resident friendly” and much easier to navigate than our current one. It will undoubtedly
take us all a little time to learn to use the new site, but the added features like having your account information available
online and better document organization will make the learning curve worth it.
I know I speak for the entire Board in wishing you all a happy and healthy 2008. Let’s work together to make it the
best year ever in Sun City Anthem. ♦
ARC Approval
Quite often, we are asked if ARC approval is required for various
installations on the outside of your property. The SCA governing
documents require prior approval by the Architectural
Review Committee for all initial installations and/or changes to the
exterior of your property. This includes all permanent installations;
i.e. major changes to landscaping, skylights, exterior lighting,
paint color changes, fences, walls, patio covers, additional
concrete, casitas, gazebos, waterfalls, pools, flagpoles, etc.
Exceptions to this would include replacing a dead plant if you
are replacing it with the same type of plant, or painting your home
Finance - Friday, January 11, 1:30 p.m.
Don Manning /Chairperson
Phone: 453-1492 Email: don.manning@cox.net
The Finance Committee is relaxing a bit after a heavy workload
in 2007. Much effort went into working with RMI and the Board
of Directors in developing the 2008 Budgets and projecting future
revenue requirements. That analysis showed the need for an
increase in the annual Association assessment beginning in
January 2008.
In 2007, we also did a lot of work on delinquent accounts,
Villas Neighborhood issues, and the ongoing review of capital and
reserve project expenditures.
There was also significant work involved in transitioning to the
new accounting system with RMI and improving the financial
statements. We feel good about the progress that has been made,
and we’re looking forward to much-improved financial statements
in 2008.
The Finance Committee is always interested in potential volunteers
who have a strong background in accounting and/or
financial management, particularly with a CPA certification.
Contact Don Manning if you would like more information.
All Finance Committee meetings are open to the public. We
encourage residents to attend these meetings to understand more
about the financial workings of our community.
ensure that our relationship will be a beneficial time for our
Sun City Anthem...A Great Place To Live
By Dave Servello, SCA Security Patrol Chief
Your personal safety within the community,
at home and when traveling about.
Community Safety: More than one resident has concluded that Sun
City Anthem is a safer place to live because of its location, regardless of
the efforts of the Henderson Police Department (HPD), and the SCA
Security Patrol (SCASP). Actually, the crime and accident rates are
reflective of the level of community involvement and concern.
Generally speaking, communities are made safer when their residents
demand higher safety standards be put in place through their community
leaders, or government entities. In this regard SCA is as safe as its
residents want it to be, now and into the future.
Home Safety: Home owners can put bars on their doors and windows,
but what does this visually say to someone who is looking to purchase
a home in the community Walls add privacy to any home, but walls
also give the burglar or thief added privacy to break into a home.
Security alarms detect unlawful home entries, but do not prevent them,
and they are dependent upon inconsistent private company and police
response times. Home alarms with loud outside sound devices are not
allowed within SCA. Large numbers of empty homes and homes with
for sale signs on them attract crooks like magnets. Such things may
attract thieves, but there are many things that the home owner can do
to protect their home: Home alarms can be wired to the home lighting
system which can be set to flash throughout the house, in specific
rooms, or as an outside light (s). Attractive security doors prevent front
doors from being kicked in, and at the same time allow the home owner
to see who is approaching their home. Many home security systems will
automatically phone your cell phone, your neighbor, your friend, your
security company, or anyone/place of your choosing for purposes of
alerting them of a potential home break-in. But if you leave a door
open or a garage door open by accident or design you are inviting a thief
to your home, and at the same time endangering your neighborhood.
Personal Safety: Law enforcement officers (Federal and Local) are
trained to look for any activity that is odd, different, or out of place, and
they are always aware of where they are, and who or what is near or
approaching them. All SCA residents need to report suspicious activities,
persons, and vehicles to the HPD and SCASP as soon as possible.
Women should use a valet system when traveling about town at night,
and they should always keep their purses closed/zipped at all time when
outside the home. If possible large heavy purses should be replaced with
small pocket purses, or with full shoulder strap purses. Men should
always carry their wallets in their front pants pocket, because this makes
the work of a pick pocket more difficult. Always park your car in a well
lighted area in the open, and as close to busy public activity as possible.
When walking along the street, in the mall, or to your car you should
be alert as to who or what is near you, and always have your car keys
ready. When you arrive at your home, always make sure you know who
or what is arriving there with you. No resident has to live in fear, but
every resident in an age restricted community must learn how to live
smartly. Finally, all Christmas presents are best kept under the tree, and
not in the car or at the front door. ♦
EMERGENCY
PREPAREDNESS GROUP
Meets January 14 at 3:00 p.m.,
Anthem Center
263-6378 retiredone@cox.net
Desired goal: Never to be called into action.
It is hard to imagine an organization whose most satisfying
outcome is never to have to use its expertise. And yet, that is the
entire goal of the Emergency Preparedness Group. The whole
purpose in being is to make our community ready for an emergency
we hope will never occur.
The EPG was established several years ago, originally as a
committee of Sun City Anthem. When it began, the enthusiasm
was great, and many residents came to the meetings. As so often
happens, though, a degree of apathy seems to have set in, possibly
because of the remoteness of 9/11 and a lessened anxiety over
man-made or natural disasters. The risk still exists, however, and
we still are trying to make the community prepared.
The commitment for volunteers is very minimal at any time
except in a declared emergency. The purpose of having a list of
names of willing helpers is to know where to turn if a disaster
occurs. Each of us would be willing to help our neighbors if our
aid was needed, but in the absence of a plan, chaos would ensue.
By signing up with the EPC, you would learn not only how to
be effective, but would benefit by knowing others were ready to
help you in a situation of need.
We especially need volunteer physicians, nurses, and other
health care providers. No action is necessary, but we need to
know who and where you are, and you need to know where to
go to help if help is needed. Only first aid will be given, so there
is no need to worry about licensure or liability.
Please call, e-mail, or send in a volunteer form from the kiosk
in the Community Center. Don’t let the “community” spirit
leave Sun City Anthem.
Queen Mary…By Julia Dodson
Every little girl dreams of being a princess…but Sun City Anthem
Resident, Mary Richard, went beyond that childhood dream - she became
a queen!
Queen Mary was crowned Ms. Nevada Senior 2006 and then went on
to be selected as the first runner up for the Ms. Senior America 2006
National Title.
Mary loves performing and is an active member of the Sun City Anthem
Performing Arts Club. She is a dancer, singer, actress, expert seamstress and
a gourmet cook. She was raised in Hartford, Connecticut and has been dancing
and singing since the age of four and has continued participating in the
entertainment field both in Los Angeles and here in Las Vegas.
Mary's experience as Ms. Nevada Senior has been one of the highlights
of her most interesting life. She not only made new friends among the
other contestants but had the opportunity, throughout her reign, to rub
elbows with the “who's who” of Nevada's social register and political and
entertainment world. Mary says she made unforgettable memories that she
will cherish forever.
Mary was encouraged by friends to enter the Ms. Senior Nevada pageant
in 2005, and was awarded the position of first runner up. The exposure to
the excitement inspired her to participate in the 2006 event and the rest is history! Ms. Richard is now hoping to instill
that excitement in the ladies of Sun City Anthem, as well. She was disappointed when she discovered that there was no
representative from our community vying for the crown this year and hopes to inspire the talented and beautiful women
here to become contestants in next year's competition.
To quote the organization's philosophy “The Ms. Senior America
Pageant is worlds the first and foremost pageant to emphasize and give
honor to women who have reached the Age of Elegance.” It is a search for
the gracious lady who best exemplifies the dignity, maturity and inner
beauty of all senior Americans. The Ms. Senior America philosophy is
based upon the belief that seniors are the foundation of America, and
our most valuable treasure. It is upon their knowledge, experience and
resources that the younger
generation has the opportunity
to build a better society.”
Mary wants to share with
everyone that the pageant,
for her, wasn't a beauty or talent competition
but a chance to present “her whole package” of enthusiasm, zest and love
of life that she so naturally exudes. Mary knows that she meets women everyday
that meet those qualifications and hopes they too take the opportunity, at
this point in their lives, to let the great state of Nevada behold the splendor of
the gracious ladies of Sun City Anthem.
So, think about it, and if you would like more information, send an email
to info.senioramerica.org. You too may go beyond that “princess dream” and
become a queen!
Sun City Anthem • January 2008 21

While Sun City Anthem residents are making plans for the
Palm Springs overnight trip on January 16-17,
the Four Aces are setting up the stage!
Four Aces Return by Popular Demand!
Oldies Prove Golden on Follies Stage
Vocal Harmony Group Performs Classic Hits of the ‘’50s
Like many groups in the early 1950s, the Four Aces began
playing locally in the Philadelphia area. Unable to land a
recording deal at first, they released their first record, “(It’s No)
Sin,” themselves.
When that debut sold more than a million copies, major label
Decca Records signed the group in time to release its next
platinum record, “Tell Me Why.”
By 1958, the Four Aces had seen more than 30 of their records
climb the The Four Aces are one of the finest “close harmony”
singing groups of all time. Their name has
been associated with such classic hits as “Tell
Me Why,” “Stranger In Paradise,” “Three
Coins In the Fountain,” and “Love Is A Many
Splendored Thing.”
22 Sun City Anthem • January 2008
Since the 1960s, the group has continued to perform
and their recordings remain perennial
favorites on radio and compact discs. The Four
Aces include Fred Diodati, 77, the group's senior
member and lead singer, Joe Giglio, 67, hightenor,
Danny Colingo, 63, baritone, and Harry
Heisler, 62, bass. Heisler also serves as the quartet's
musical conductor.
One of the last “super groups” of the pre-rock 'n'
roll era, the Four Aces never abandoned the loving
interpretation of well-crafted songs that
made them stars and typified mid-20th century
pop. Their importance in music history and
their popularity with Follies audiences make
them naturals to guest-star in this year's salute to
Tin Pan Alley!
Don’t miss this three-hour, razzle-dazzle, song
and dance extravaganza with the fabulous Palm
Springs Follies! Tickets may be purchased at the
front desk at the Anthem Center. For more information,
The Springs Preserve Host Annual
Citywide Christmas Tree Recycling Program
The Springs Preserve is partnering for the sixth year with local
public and private organizations to host the Christmas Tree
Recycling program, which runs from December 26 through
January 15. There will be 19 convenient drop-off sites located
throughout the Las Vegas Valley.
Residents who purchase live Christmas trees this season are
encouraged to give back to the community this season by returning
their trees to the environment. Recycled trees are turned into nutrient-rich
mulch, an organic material used in public gardens and
parks across the valley to help conserve soil moisture and keep
plants healthy. The mulch provides a protective barrier for the roots
of other plants and prevents weed growth. As the mulch decomposes,
it provides many nutrients that plants need to survive.
"The program offers residents and businesses an environmentally
responsible method for disposing of their Christmas trees," said
Marcel Parent, manager of education/volunteerism for the Springs
Preserve. "It's an easy way to support the community and reduce
the amount of recyclable material that ends up in a landfill."
In the Las Vegas Valley, approximately 250,000 live trees are sold
during the holiday season. According to a survey from
www.earth911.org, the national average for recycling live
Christmas trees is 93 percent. Southern Nevada is among the lowest
in the nation for recycling trees at a mere 3 percent. Last year,
valley residents recycled 6,669 trees through the program. The
2006-2007 goal is 10,000 trees.
Before dropping trees off, all non-organic material must be
removed, such as lights, ornaments, wires, tinsel and nails. Foreign
objects contaminate the mulch and damage the chipper. Flocked
trees cannot be recycled. Live Christmas trees may be dropped off
at any of the following locations:
Club Happenings
Anthem Authors
Tuesdays, 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m, Bristol Room,
Recreation Center
We invite you to join us and celebrate your
writing.
We provide a forum for information, support, and sharing our memoirs,
poems, short stories, essays, or novels with fellow writers.
Our club has published a second anthology titled, “The Write Stuff,”
that includes a collection of the above-mentioned subjects. Production
of a CD of the anthology in co-operation with
Readers Theatre is near completion.
Once again, one of our members voices her
reasons for actively participating in Anthem
Authors. To quote Judy Naegle, “When I first
joined Anthem Authors I didn’t know what to
expect, but I have to say it was the best thing I
could have done at the time. The club keeps
me writing, it’s as simple as that, and I’ve become acquainted with talented,
fun, caring people who will be numbered among my friends forever.”
For club information call President, Beth Williams at 617-4553. You
may also call the president to purchase copies of “The Write Stuff” for
$12.00.
Bid Whist
Fridays, 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m., Anthem Center Game Room
Bid Whist is a quickly-paced card game; an exciting cross between Spades,
Hearts, and Bridge where Spades are not always trump. It’s played by four
people, two sets of partners, using a 52 card deck plus two jokers. The history
of the game teaches us that it is a version of Whist developed by the
Sleeping Car Porters and incorporates language of travel from the routes
covered by the railroad. Complete success is called a “running a Boston”
which is related to the final stop of the train. On-site assistance is available
to help newcomers and those who want to sharpen their skills. In addition
to our weekly game sessions, social functions are sometimes held. Dues are
only $10.00 a year and members can play as often as they care to. Call
Garden
The Garden Club’s November tour of the Las Vegas Springs Preserve
was a great success. Thirty-eight members and guests were guided
through the gardens by Linn Mills, horticulturist extraorinaire, and two
other Master Gardeners. We all agreed that the Preserve merits visiting
time and again.
Our 2008 meetings kick off on Tuesday, January 8, when Dennis
Swartzell instructs us on winter clean up, including pruning and training
young trees. Dennis is a Master Arborist certified by the
International Society of Arboriculture and is the director Emeritus of
The Arboretum at UNLV. The meeting will be held at Anthem Center,
and no reservations are necessary. Join us at 9:00 a.m. for coffee and
conversation. The meeting will commence at 9:30.
Garden Club membership is a true benefit of life at SCA. The
$10.00 annual dues pays for nine meetings a year with outstanding
speakers arranged by Master Gardener Bob Connelly, as well as the
opportunity to meet and socialize with fellow SCA members struggling
to garden in the Mojave Desert. Members get early notice of meetings
and events via email. In addition, Bob maintains a message board for
members. Announce an event or post a problem, and the message is
automatically broadcast via email to all members. Usually, one or more
members will respond with suggested solutions.
Our first announced affair was December 12 at the Morris & Nelson
rooms at 6:00 p.m. at Independence Center. It was an
evening of music, singing, dancing or just
socializing.
On January 20, we are joining
forces with the Opera Club
because of our commonality. The
Activities Department is sponsoring
an upscale gala featuring a tenor
Marx, emphasizes the importance of science in studying human society,
underscores the importance of religon, and writes extensively on bureaucracy,
tradition, modernization, authority, and social change. Joel is a
bible. He has studied many sites in Israel, and has a fountain of knowledge
on the subject. His occupation is studying and developing health
care systems in underdeveloped societies. For much of his years, he
worked with the Rand Corporation, and has visited, advised, and/or
helped develop health care systems in more than thirty countries.
Discussion: Friday, January 25, 10:30 a.m. at 1843 Morganton Drive.
Topic to be determined.
Saturdays, noon to 4:00 p.m. at Independence Hall Aerobics Room
Anthem residents of all abilities are welcome to join the Table Tennis
Club. Club members have access to a table tennis ball machine (robot)
that can help players improve their skills and work on a multitude of different
strokes at different speeds. Free clinics are held every first and
third Monday evening. Also, instructional DVDs are available to Club
members in good standing. Yearly dues are only $5.
Table Tennis began in England during the 1880s. Today throughout
the world, people play table tennis for exercise, recreation and social
interaction. As a non-contact sport, using a ball that weighs only a few
grams, table tennis is practically a risk-free sport. Players can realize a
number of physical benefits from table tennis including improved handeye
coordination and reactions. Over time studies have shown that both
gross and fine muscle movements can be improved. Over the course of
play, a fair, yet not extreme, amount of aerobic activity occurs. Players
can set their own level of involvement.
Nineteen million Americans participate in table tennis each year.
Table Tennis is the most popular racket sport in the world and became
an Olympic sport in 1988.
Thank You Southern Nevada For The Helping Hand
Thank you Southern Nevadans, for your commitment
and continued effort to conserve!
As you know, our primary water resource, the Colorado River, has been in a state of
drought for the past several years, evidenced by Lake Mead's receding shoreline. The
Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) recognizes this and understands that our
region's economy, jobs and existence depend upon a reliable water supply. Even though
the drought has impacted our primary water resource, there is some good news.
Thanks to your conservation efforts in supporting the mandatory watering schedule
and other water-use restrictions, the community used 18 billion gallons less water last
year than it did four years ago. That's enough water to fill 65 Empire State Buildings.
Additionally, more than 96 million square feet of grass has been removed through the
Water Smart Landscapes Rebate program, proving that desert landscaping doesn't
diminish our quality of life, but rather enhances it by ensuring water resources are available
for the future. Thanks for continuing to do your part.
Additionally, the SNWA has created water banks that hold more than 500 billion gallons in reserves for our community. We also
are extending a new intake at Lake Mead to protect the quality and reliability of our supply even in severe lake conditions.
Furthermore, we are working to bring a portion of our state's unused groundwater supplies to the valley in an environmentally
responsible way. Bringing new water supplies to Southern Nevada will help meet future water demands
and reduce our reliance on the drought-stricken Colorado River. The SNWA will continue to protect the reliability of
our community's water supply, and we appreciate your conservation efforts. Together we will continue to develop
sustainable water resource solutions for our community. For more information, visit snwa.com.

Empowering Yourselves As Homeowners
Knowing your rights as a homeowner will help you effectively
deal with contractors and avoid mishaps with unlicensed contractors.
When you need to repair or remodel your home, the Nevada
State Contractors Board has advice to help make your projects run
smoothly.
The NSCB recommends that you always hire licensed contractors.
Each licensed contractor must have a five-digit license number.
You can check a contractor’s license number by contacting the
NSCB, or by visiting our website at: www.nscb.state.nv.us. All
contractors are required to display their license number on all business
cards, bids, contracts, letterheads, websites, vehicles and advertisements.
If they don’t display or have this license number, they
are probably unlicensed.
We recommend that homeowners take the initiative, and get at
least three bids and ask for references. Check these references to
ensure the contractor’s credibility and past performance. You
should obtain only written contracts and understand them before
you sign anything. Do not accept verbal offers. It is important to
keep a record of all payments made, and never pay in cash. If you
want a pool or spa built, make sure to pay the contractor only 10
percent down or $1,000 whichever is less.
As a homeowner, you have the right to file a complaint with
the Board, if workmanship issues arise. You have four years from
the time your project is completed to file a complaint.
Complaints can be filed for both licensed and unlicensed contractors.
Go to our website to download complaint forms, or call us
at: (702) 486-1100.
Unlicensed contractors will approach you to solicit bids. Be
on the look out for high-pressure sales and contractors who
demand payments in cash, or ask you to obtain or pull building
permits. A contractor should never ask you to obtain building
permits.
To help protect people from unlicensed contractors, the NSCB
has created “Homeowners Beware!” door hangers, which warn
homeowners about unlicensed contractors. These door hangers
are designed to be distributed throughout neighborhoods and are
available free of charge to any homeowner willing to help distribute
them. Please join in the NSCB campaign to help protect
homeowners from becoming victims of unlicensed contractors.
For further information, or to request free door hangers, please
contact Ranya Botros, Public Information Assistant at: (702) 486-
1165, or e-mail her at rbotros@nscb.state.nv.us.
In the state of Nevada, it is against the law to contract without
a license. The first offense is a misdemeanor, second is a gross
misdemeanor and the third is a Class E Felony. The NSCB regulates
licensing of contractors and has the duty to protect the
health, welfare and safety of the public.
The NSCB would like homeowners to empower themselves
and become aware of their rights. Don’t become another victim
of unlicensed contractors.
Ranya Botros is the Public Information Assistant with the Nevada State
Contractors Board. She can be reached at: (702) 486-1165, or e-mail her
