Principal’s Message
Students and staff all returned from camp with wonderful
tales of fun, fellowship, significant learning and deeper
understandings about team and community skills. It is a
significant act when teachers agree to supervise school
camps and other weekend student activities. I know our
students have learnt to appreciate the generosity and
commitment of our staff, rather than simply expecting it.
On Monday morning James Unsworth arrived at our staff
morning briefing carrying a box full of trophies. Both he
and Anna Wood spent the weekend at the Malaysian World
Scholars Cup Competition with a large team comprising
of many of our brightest students. Our team won just
about everything that was on offer at the event. They
not only won, or were placed in almost every section of
the competition, but also earned a great deal of respect
from the other participants for their humble and respectful
demeanour demonstrated in winning. Winning honours as
the champion school in both the junior and senior section of
the competition is an outstanding result.
Our Junior Young Voices and Senior String Quartet students
impressed a large audience when they performed at the
Bangsar Shopping Centre recently in the International
School Talent Competition.
Our Under 16 Boys’ Basketball team won gold at the French
International School tournament, winning all four of their
matches convincingly. Our netball, rugby and girls touch
football teams competed with great flair and success in their
recent sports exchange with Penang Uplands School.
Our students are excelling on many fronts. This week we had
Under 12 and Under 14 development squads (learn to play)
rugby matches against ISKL. Several students took part in
the the Australian Schools computing competition. Some of
our Performing Arts groups performed during lunchtime on
Wednesday.
Our recent Cross Country Carnival was a great success and
another example of superb team work in the way it was
organised and conducted.
More than 40 of our most talented creative writers from year
3 to year 11 took part in writing workshops recently. Students
in Junior School have enjoyed increased opportunities
in sport, performing arts and academic challenges. Our
students are embracing opportunities to Explore, Extend
and Excel in many curriculum and co - curricula pursuits.
Enjoy the term break. It has been a very productive term for
all of our students.
Camps
Welcome back to all students and staff from
the various Senior School Camps. I had the
‘pleasure’ of accompanying the Year 9 group
to Sabah. The reason that I place pleasure
in inverted commas is because most people
would not consider the idea of squat toilets,
bucket showers and living under canvas a
pleasure. However, these discomforts were
more than compensated for by the can do,
positive attitude of the students. Time and
again they were challenged and time and again
they succeeded. These challenges came from
all different quarters: whether it be mixing
concrete, climbing hills, teaching a two and
half hour lesson or learning and performing a
traditional dance. On each occasion students
stepped up. We should be rightly proud of our
young men and women. I am sure that there
are similar stories from other camps.
I would like to re-emphasise my comments
in the last newsletter about the sacrifice
that AISM staff make to allow the camps to
happen. I was again pleased with the families
that took the time to come up and thank camp
staff for their efforts. It means a lot.
ICAS testing
With the Computer Skills test now completed
it is time to look towards the other tests. The
Science Test is scheduled for the first day back
next term (Tuesday, 24th April). A letter
has been sent home with students outlining
the details for this test.
Dates for the remaining two tests are:
English Thursday, 19th July
(note change of date due to vacation)
Mathematics Tuesday, 24th July
Congratulations
A huge congratulations to Mr Unsworth and
the Scholaroos. An incredible achievement.
Best in both Senior and Junior teams and
numerous (50+) awards. A full report is in
page 10 of this newsletter.
Eliza Chew (Year 10)
has been selected as
part of the Malaysian
Philharmonic Youth
Orchestra for their
upcoming season.
This is a remarkable
achievement and I look
forward to seeing Eliza
perform later in the year.
Photography
Students from Photography class, share what they have
learnt recently.
Depth Of Field
In Photography, we have been learning about Depth of
Field. Depth of Field is when you choose to have either
a part of your
photo in focus
or everything in
focus. The theme
was “Nature” and
I was interested in
creating a shallow
depth of field on
the tree.
Year 10
Mr B’s Careers Corner
Career Voyage
Week 10 has proved to be another busy week for careers
and pathways at AISM. On Tuesday, our Year 9 students
took part in the JIIG-CAL Career Voyage survey. This is an
online program that allows students to consider future career
paths by completing a preference-based questionnaire.
The survey looks at what areas students might like and
generates a report based on their preferences. The results
will form the basis for Year 9 student interviews, which will
commence early next term.
Futurewise Profiling
A number of Year 10 students had their Morrisby
psychometric profiling on Wednesday this week. This is
a far more detailed testing program than Career Voyage
and is part of the Futurewise membership. The results will
be available next term and will aid students and parents
with subject selections, work experience and eventually
university applications. This profiling looks for fundamental
abilities and the scores are not improved by revision, so
students of all academic abilities are able to complete the
process. Following a profiling session, students receive a
detailed report which identifies their strengths in reasoning
that include:
o verbal and numerical ability
o perceptual, spatial and mechanical ability
o personality and learning style
o problem solving ability
Save the Date!!
An early notification that our IDP Australian University
Fair will be on the evening of Monday, May 7th.
The event will start at around 5.30pm and will end at
around 8pm in the school gym. All parents and students
from Year 7 to 12 are warmly invited to attend.
Middle School News
Camp week for 2012 has been a huge success with all
Middle School levels participating. The students were
given many exciting opportunities to develop and
nurture their skills and talents.
Whilst each camp has different learning outcomes the
general facilities on all camps were excellent. I had the
pleasure of partaking in both the year 5 and 7 camps
and was encouraged by the positive contribution of all
students to the success of their camp.
The camp experience also assists students with life
skills. They learn how to live and mix with others
and how to make their own decisions and valid
choices. They also learn how to take responsibility for
themselves. I certainly recognised that as the week
went on the students were clearly demonstrating more
independence and the ability to make responsible
choices.
I was impressed by:
• the students ability to support and encourage each
other when they felt challenged.
• excellent behaviour of our students given that all
camps were located where some facilities were shared
with the public
• Resilience
• Empathy for others in a shared environment
• Respect demonstrated to teachers and instructors
I wish to formally thank all of the staff who gave up their
time away from their families to be on duty 24 hours
a day for the camp week. Teachers make significant
contributions in time and energy throughout the week
and without this dedication the program would not be
possible.
World Scholars Cup
I would like to congratulate those Middle School
students who were selected and participated in the
World Scholars Cup. The results were outstanding and
demonstrate that our curriculum is both rigorous and
effective in teaching high order concepts.
Term Holidays
I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the
students and their families a safe and restful holiday
and Happy Easter for those Christian families in our
school community.
Year 5 Band Open Rehearsal
On Wednesday, 4th of April the Year 5 band were
together for the first time. Mr Malcolm McCormick
is doing a wonderful job with these students and it
would be very encouraging for parents to continue
showing their support.
Kylie Booker, Head of Middle School
Information Resource Centre News
Poetry Week included a
variety of activities. Ken
Spillman’s presentations
to our Middle & Senior
school students focused
on being creative and
using one’s imagination.
His workshops covered
areas such as ways to develop storylines and
characters. Ken introduced the younger students
to his Jakes series including titles such as “Jake’s
Monster Mess”.
Roving Books Stall was once again very popular and
took over RM3, 000 of which our library will receive
10%.
The Middle & Senior School Poetry Slam was very
entertaining.
Junior School dress-up day and parade provided lots
of fun with Ms Wendy Benner as the colourful and
very entertaining, dragon MC.
Local storyteller, Anne Ooi delighted the Prep, Kindy
and Year 1 students with a variety of very animated
and captivating stories.
Last week I attended
the EARCOS (East Asia
Regional Council of
Schools) conference in
Bangkok. There was a
strong library strand,
which focused on
traditional as well as e-format. The keynote speakers
were inspiring with presentations on topics such as
“Teachers Make the Difference” and “Educational
Transformation through Digital Creativity.” Our new
library will focus on blending digital and non-digital
resources.
Many thanks to all the parent helpers this term. Your
contribution to our library is very much appreciated.
Happy holiday reading.
Junior School News
Well done everyone on a terrific start to the year. It’s
hard to believe that we are already at the end of Term
1. I would like to thank the teachers for their efforts this
term and congratulate them on a great start to the year.
Our Year 3 and 4 students attended camp last week and
I am led to understand that the new venue was a hit
with the students. I would like to extend my thanks and
gratitude to those teachers who gave up their own family
time to attend the camp.
I attended the Saturday
soccer with Mrs Welsh on
the weekend and it was
great to see so many of our
young boys and girls running
around out there and having
fun on a Saturday morning.
Learning to play as part
of team is of such value
to a child’s development
and I would encourage
anyone who is thinking of
bringing their children to the
Saturday morning soccer to
do so.
Junior School Poetry Competition
The Junior School Poetry Competition proved to be
thoroughly entertaining for all! There are many thanks
in order:
Firstly, to all those students who performed and all
those who had a go in class!
Secondly, to all those parents who supported their
children in preparation for the event.
Thirdly, to Mrs Bal-Short for doing such fabulous judging
when the standard was so high.
The medal winners in order of 1st, 2nd, 3rd.
CONGRATULATIONS TO:
Prep: Aneesha, Aaryan, Caroline
Kinder: Yi Qi, Kayato, Hanz
Year One: Oliver, Charlotte, Danish
Year Two: Lily, Tania, Emily
Year Three: Gilbert, Nalini, Costanza
Year Four: Taasia, Aletheia, Lharanya
With the holidays it is always important to continue a
home reading program with the younger students, to
continue to consolidate that which they have learnt
during the term. It can happen that some children don’t
practise their reading and we find that they have gone a
little backwards in their benchmarking when they return
to school.
I hope you all enjoy your well-deserved break and I look
forward to catching up with you at the beginning of the
new term.
Damian Baynes, Head of Junior School
Year 4 Camp
Year 4 had a fun-filled, jam packed three days at the
Puteri Resort in Melaka. The children enjoyed many
daytime activities including making camp bandanas,
water based telematches, rafting, an obstacle course,
making friendship bracelets and a treasure hunt as well
as our night time activities of a night ‘jungle walk’ and
a disco. There were ample opportunities for bonding
with friends and teachers through discussions and
teambuilding activities. We concluded our time together
with a new found sense of community and respect for
each other.
Year 3 Camp
On Thursday, 29th March, 37 excited Year 3 students
headed to Puteri Resort, Melaka for their very first
camping experience. The students all had a wonderful
time participating in a range of activities including
rafting, swimming, treasure hunting and archery. The
camp was very successful and they are all looking
forward to next year’s camp.
Senior School Elective Drama
students and Advanced English
students recently attend this
performance at KLpac. This
fast paced and very physical comedy examined and
reinterpreted many of Shakespeare’s plays. The
students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the
chance to see some first class acting live on stage. It
is hoped that we will be able to negotiate more student
matinees at KLpac in the future to provide more
opportunities for our students to experience the joy of
live theatre.
Expressions Talent Quest
The AISM Young Voices and String Quartet recently
participated in The Expat Group’s Expressions Talent
Quest at Bangsar Shopping Centre on Saturday 24th
March. Although neither group made it to the finals they
participated with pride and excellence in representing
the school. I would like to congratulate all the student
performers, thank the parents for their support and
especially thank Mrs. Bal-Short and Mr. McCormick for
their work with these ensembles.
Year 5 Band Open Rehearsal
On Wednesday, 4th of April I will be combining both
Year 5 classes to put the Year 5 band together for
the first time. If any parents wish to attend the end
of this rehearsal at 2.45 they are most welcome.
This will not be a formal concert but an open
rehearsal and a good chance for parents to see
what is happening in this programme. I am very
pleased with their progress at this time and I ask
parents to continue to encourage students in their
daily practice.
Junior Music Notes
Many thanks to the students from AISM who attended and performed exquisitely
at the Expressions International Schools Talent Quest held at Bangsar Shopping
Centre on 24 March. It was a great experience for the Young Voices Choir to perform
publically and for the AISM String Quartet who opened the Senior School category.
Competing with beautiful cultural dancers, magicians and such a variety of performers
in such a public space, is a big call for a choir and a quartet. However, the standard of
our performances were in a different league from the other competitors. AISM can be
very proud of the standard of musicianship and how polished our young performers
are. Well done everyone.
Our next big gig will be the ANZAC Day Dawn Service
early next term on April 25. Have a safe and happy holiday
break.
AISM Cross Country Carnival 2012
The lead-up to this year’s
event saw many of our
senior students training
at every opportunity. Each
lunchtime house leaders
were out on the track
promoting their teams
and encouraging the
chance to get some important running time on the
new course. Competition was going to be tough with
many students keen to put lots of kilometres under
their belt. All classes had run the course several times
during PE lessons and fitness was a priority early
in the term. Once again it was great to see Allied
Pickford supporting the school, providing shade
tents and bottled water for
our students and staff.
The stands were also full
of cheering parents and
friends, encouraging the
students in each of the
races.
The scene was set for a great day and, as the Senior
3km athletes took to the start line, the field erupted in
house chants. With the heat of the day kicking in early
the longer events started
to roll through. The racing
was just as hot as the
sun and, as many of the
athletes crossed the line,
you could see how much
effort they had endured for
their team.
After the 3km event, came
one of the highlights of the
day with our Prep and Kindy
students taking to the
track and providing some
great entertainment for
the screaming crowd. The
2km and then the Junior
School 1km events followed. Whilst the distances
reduced with age, the commitment and effort didn’t
change and as each race finished, through the pain,
one could see elation and pride of just completing the
race.
With the sun beating down,
the presentation ceremony
was moved to the comfort
of the air conditioned
gymnasium and as each
of the age champions
were presented with their
medals the house teams
roared with cheers for teammates.
The final announcement
was the ultimate prize of
House Champions and
following on from last
year’s success, Freeman
was once again victorious.
Many of our students will continue to train under
the watchful eye of our distance coach, Mr Damian
Baynes, who gives many early morning hours to
prepare these athletes for further competition with
ISAC and Triathlon/Duathlon events.
A big thank you must go out to the staff, who assisted
on the day and the service crew who helped to set
up the course.
AISM Softball Teams
For the first time in AISM’s history we
entered the ISAC Softball competition with
both girls and boys teams.
Although the girls played their first
set of matches without even having
the opportunity to practise (due to the
competition being held shortly into our
term 1), they approached the matches with
great enthusiasm and sportsmanship. The
girls were soundly beaten in the first few weeks, however this
did not stop them from learning the game
quickly and improving immensely as they
experienced game time. A testament to
their improvement was that on the final day
of competition the girls pushed ISKL to a 9
-4 loss. This was after losing to the same
team 19 -2 earlier in the competition. The
girls were also rewarded with a fantastic
win in their final game, over a co-ed team
from Tenby.
The boys started well with a win over
Tenby 21 -2, however they found the going
harder against the more experienced,
larger schools. As with the girls, the boys
displayed a massive improvement as the
competition progressed. As they gained
a better understanding of the rules and
strategies of the game, their team play
improved vastly. The highlight of the
competition was not the
two wins the team had, but in the final
game in which the boys lost to ISKL 5 -3.
This was after losing to the same team 24
-2 earlier in the competition.
I was very proud of both the teams. They
conducted themselves in an admirable
manner on and off the field, displaying
sportsmanship and determination to do
their best.
KLASS last Saturday. We were so proud of
the boys as they tried hard and performed
very well. They won two games, drew three
and lost three against stiff competition.
Thank you to the parents who cheered us on
and especially to our coach for the day, Mr
Hakem, who nearly lost his voice instructing
and encouraging from the sidelines.
U13 Girls Basketball
Two weeks ago our girls U13 basketball team
played their final game in this competition.
Whilst the girls have won one of their five
games, they are to be commended on their
willingness to train and compete. When they
started at the beginning of the year, each
team member had no idea of their position
let alone their role as a member of the team.
Today each player knows what they are
supposed to do, where they are supposed
to stand and what their role in the team is.
Over the next few months, we will continue
training so they can increase their skills.
The students are to be congratulated on the
manner in which they play the game. They
are keen to play, give their best and are
great ambassadors for the school.
AISM vs The International School of
Penang (Uplands)
The Uplands School,
Penang travelled to AISM
for a feast of Aussie Sport
on Saturday 17th March.
Teams in Netball, Rugby
and Touch competed in
a round robin of friendly
competition. The Senior and U16 Girls Netball, Senior
Rugby 10s and 7s and our Senior Girls Touch played a
mixture of games throughout the morning.
Rugby saw some close and
exciting clashes with many
entertaining passages of
play. There were some
great contests as our boys
are just starting to work
into preseason training
and welcomed the hit out.
The AISM Roos were victorious in their games and
look like they would be having a great year ahead.
The first games of the
year for our netball girls
revealed some new talent
combined with the core
of last year’s successful
players. The Senior team,
whilst losing their game,
displayed promising skill
and look like they would be having a good season.
The 16s seem to have picked up where they left off
last year and dominated
their games. Some new
players into this team
combined with a number of
U13 players who stepped
up for the day, showed
that netball is gaining
momentum at AISM.
The touch girls seem to have lost nothing over the
summer break and came out firing against a stunned
mixed boys/girls Penang team. Tries out wide quickly
saw the score move to 4 – 0 before the visitors
bothered the scorer. The tries continued to come as
the speed and stepping of the AISM girls resulted
in a 11 – 5 final score line. Having lost some key
playmakers at the end of last year, it was great to see
others step up and take control.
A special mention must go to two fantastic supporting
families who made the day special for all the students
by providing sustenance in the form of BBQ and drinks:
James and Daisy Murdoch supplied all the sausages,
buns and drink, while Rod and Karen McLaughlin
and Grandparents supplied the BBQ, cooking up
the traditional Aussie lunch. Both Penang and AISM
students were grateful for their contribution.
In all it was a great event, combining some highly
skilful sporting action as well as some very important
social interaction between the schools.
Parent Association Information
Hi Parents,
I’m back again! Following our AGM on the 16th
March, the Parent’s Association Executive Committee
was re-elected with only two changes to the Parent
Representatives. Your committee is:
President: Leanne Robertson
Vice President: Noor’aza Greatorex
Secretary: Kerrie McConnaghy
Treasurer: Chris Lambert
Parent Representative: Annette Pearsall
We say farewell to Rhonda Kortum and thank her for
all her hard work last year. I’m sure she will still be
there helping us out.
We welcome on board Jane Bartley, whom I’m sure
plenty of you already know.
We also welcome Ilhaam Soeker-Jadwat - a new
parent this year who has bravely stepped up to join
us.
As we all have a year’s experience behind us now, we
are looking forward to making 2012 a great year for
the PA.
We have already hosted our first event for the year - a
Twilight Nite - which went successfully. We saw quite
a few new families attending and once again, we had
great luck with the weather - no rain!
Preparation for the Mother’s Day stall is well underway
with Jane and her band of dedicated ladies braving
the markets and streets to ensure plenty of great
bargains at the stall. Gifts will be priced at RM 1.00,
RM 2.00, RM 3.00, RM 5.00, RM 8.00 and RM 10.00.
Envelopes and further information will be given out
when we return to school early next term. For now,
mark your calendars for Wednesday, 9th May. In the
past this has been a day that the children really look
forward to and enjoy, as much as mums enjoy getting
the surprise. If you have any questions please contact
Jane via the AISM Parents Association (pa@aism.edu.
my).
Jane is also very busy
organising a Recycle for
Ringgit campaign. It’s one
of our ongoing fundraising
ideas that helps you, the
environment, the school
and people in developing
countries (transitional
economies). So gather up
all your unused clothes,
footwear, handbags, belts,
hats, scarves, Manchester -
towels, sheets, tablecloths
and light curtains and don’t
throw them away. Keep hold
of them so you can bag them
up and bring them to school
as we will be running our
first campaign this year at the beginning of Term 2.
It doesn’t matter if some items are old. A lot of the
materials can be used as industrial and domestic
cleaning cloths, or recycled for the fibre/material
content and made into animal rugs.
The Parents’ Association will receive ongoing ringgits
for full bags returned, the amount will depend on the
quality of the goods inside each bag.
All the good quality clothing will be sent to local
markets in developing countries including Africa,
China, Middle East, Cambodia, India, Indonesia and
Papua New Guinea to be bought by people who may
otherwise not be able to afford clothes.
So, get busy and start cleaning out those cupboards
during the holidays, as the “red” bag delivery is on
its way.
Our other planned events so far, will be Father’s Day
breakfast and Trivia Night. We also have some other
thoughts for the year…….
If anyone has any suggestions or ideas, the PA can
be contacted directly through our e-mail: pa@aism.
edu.my. We look forward to another great year.
CANTEEN REVIEW:
YOUR SUGGESTIONS
As a result of the parent and student surveys
conducted at the end of 2011, a Canteen Committee
has been formed to conduct a review and implement
improvements to the school canteen. The current
canteen operator contract is due for renewal at the
end of 2012. The Canteen Committee is chaired by
Mr Danny Lee, Head of Finance and Administration,
and includes Principal, Mr David Kilpatrick; Parents
Association Executive Member, Mrs Noor’aza
Greatorex; parent, Mrs Larissa Vaillancourt and
senior students, Lim Shao Qi (12W) and Izzah
Ibrahim (12W). The Committee will review the
Canteen operations against other international
schools and the Australian Canteen Association
Standards, propose changes, and report regularly
on progress back to parents and students through
the Parents’ Association, the e-News and the AISM
newsletter. We need your suggestions!
The Canteen Committee is very keen to receive
constructive parent and student suggestions about
how to improve the canteen with:
- healthy eating choices/menu
- price/cost
- service
Please email your suggestions to either Noor
at 012-2781131 or nooraza@mgreatorex.
com, or Larissa at laramarc@iinet.net.au. All
suggestions, even recipes, are welcome, and your
communication will be treated in confidence by the
Canteen Committee.
