Susta<strong>in</strong>able Forestry Certification Scheme - a system <strong>for</strong> certify<strong>in</strong>g that a <strong>for</strong>est is be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

managed accord<strong>in</strong>g to the pr<strong>in</strong>ciples of susta<strong>in</strong>able <strong>for</strong>est management as def<strong>in</strong>ed by the Food<br />

and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to mean:<br />

Management of a <strong>for</strong>est with the aim to ensure that the goods and services derived from<br />

the <strong>for</strong>est meets present-day needs while at the same time secur<strong>in</strong>g their cont<strong>in</strong>ued<br />

availability and contribution to long-term development. In its broadest sense, <strong>for</strong>est<br />

management encompasses the adm<strong>in</strong>istrative, legal, technical, economic, social, and<br />

environmental aspects of the conservation and use of <strong>for</strong>ests. It implies various degrees<br />

of deliberate human <strong>in</strong>tervention, rang<strong>in</strong>g from actions aimed at safeguard<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the <strong>for</strong>est ecosystem and its functions, to favor<strong>in</strong>g specific socially or<br />

economically valuable species or groups of species <strong>for</strong> the improved production of<br />

goods and services.<br />

<strong>Timber</strong> - wood products <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g logs, lumber, veneer, chips, shav<strong>in</strong>gs, sawdust, bark, pulp,<br />

paper and products from these materials exclud<strong>in</strong>g recycled products.<br />

Trader – an entity engaged <strong>in</strong> the bus<strong>in</strong>ess of buy<strong>in</strong>g and/or sell<strong>in</strong>g timber and wood products.<br />

4.0 Requirements - The Operator shall implement a publicly available purchas<strong>in</strong>g policy<br />

that m<strong>in</strong>imally conta<strong>in</strong>s the elements of this section. The Operator may choose to <strong>in</strong>stitute an<br />

established and reputable responsible purchas<strong>in</strong>g policy as long as it m<strong>in</strong>imally <strong>in</strong>cludes the<br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g elements. See examples <strong>in</strong> Appendix 6<br />

4.1 Procurement Policy Statement - The Operator shall prepare a procurement<br />

policy statement, approved and supported by top management that shall<br />

m<strong>in</strong>imally <strong>in</strong>clude the follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

4.1.1 Statement as to the scope of the commitment of the company to purchase<br />

and trade legal timber<br />

4.1.2 Statement as to the strategy of the company to achieve the goal of<br />

purchas<strong>in</strong>g and trad<strong>in</strong>g 100% legal timber<br />

4.1.3 Statement as to the sources of timber that are systematically elim<strong>in</strong>ated<br />

from the supply cha<strong>in</strong> (i.e. unknown or unsusta<strong>in</strong>able sources)<br />

4.1.4 Statement as to the specific actions taken to reduce the risk of illegal timber<br />

enter<strong>in</strong>g the supply cha<strong>in</strong> (i.e. consequences to suppliers)<br />

4.2 Infrastructure and Control Systems - The Operator shall establish a<br />

quality control system and a designated competent Coord<strong>in</strong>ator to<br />
