commanded the Christians to remove from Apollo's sanctuary the<br />

loathsome coffin which Gallus had deposited there ^ They did so :<br />

but they managed to render their compliance more offensive to the<br />

emperor than their refusal could have been. Men, women, and children,<br />

in crowds joined the festive procession which accompanied the<br />

holy reliques to their resting-place within the city. Along the whole<br />

route— the Daphnsean sanctuary was four or five miles distant from the<br />

city^—they<br />

sung the psalm of defiance, 'Confounded be all they that<br />

worship graven images.' The emperor was furious at these demonstrations.<br />

Christians were apprehended and put to the torture*; but<br />

nothing was gained by this severity. He was advised that coercion only<br />

aggravated the evil which he sought to remove. But a still heavier<br />

blow awaited the god of the Daphntean grove. Shortly after the removal<br />

of the martyr's bones, a fire broke out in the shrine ^ The<br />
