Again, hke the spurious biographer, the writer of the postscript is ready
with any number of pre-existent documents, to give colour to his
narrative. We have the whole pedigree of the transmission. The
most famous scholar
first stage introduces the name of Polycarp's
Ireneeus. The second stage is marked by the name of the orthodox
interlocutor in the famous Dialogue with Proclus directed against the
Montanists (Euseb. H. E. ii.
25, iii. 28, 31, vi. 20), Gaius, who seems
in the course of the work to have spoken of Ireneeus as his master'.

the third person in the pedigree of transmission written in different
copies Socrates or Isocrates — we have no knowledge ;
but we may
surmise that his name was not unknown in the third and fourth
centuries. Nay, have we not in this Pionian postscript the very echo
of the language in the Pionian Life, where previous documents are
