The extant Ignatian letter to Polycarp again<br />

contains no such injunctions<br />

as Polycarp here states that Ignatius gave<br />

him. There are<br />

indeed general directions to him to commit to the messengers whom he<br />

sends to Syria the letters of other churches ;<br />

but there is no mention<br />

be reconciled in<br />

of any particular church. The two accounts may<br />

more than one way (see in. p. 347) but no mode of ; reconciling them<br />

is intelligible on the supposition of a forgery. Again the notices relating<br />

to the delegate reveal still more subtle relations. Ignatius directs<br />

the Smyrnean Church generally {Stnyrn. 11) and Polycarp in particular<br />

{Polyc. 7) to appoint an exceptionally trustworthy delegate to Antioch.<br />

He does not hint at Polycarp's going himself. On the contrary the<br />

language of his salutation is such as indirectly to exclude this contingency<br />

and to show that it was not present to his mind {Polyc. 8 tou 7riixirovTo
