of the old prophets, Elijah, Jeremiah, Isaiah, Samuel, Daniel, instead of<br />

their original names, which in some cases were derived from idols<br />

AtKcSv oWwv d Tv^oi). In like manner, in the absence of any definite<br />

information, we may conjecture that Ignatius assumed the name Theophorus,<br />

' the God-bearer,' at the time of his conversion or his baptism,<br />

desiring thereby to keep continually before his mind the duties and<br />

privileges of his newly acquired position.<br />

But whatever may have been the cause of its assumption in the first<br />

instance, the name itself gave rise to more than one mythical legend,<br />

according as it was interpreted 'the God-borne' (O^ocjiopos) or 'the Godbearer<br />
