It is not very easy to conceive Rufinus producing from the<br />

spiritless translation supplied by Eusebius a document which savours so strongly of<br />

the imperial edict of Hadrian's age. In this case, the corruption Serenius for Licinius<br />

or Silvanus must have been found in the text of Justin by Rufinus, as it had been<br />

found previously by Eusebius. The corruption is the more explicable where a Greek<br />

copyist, transcribing a Greek MS, suddenly found himself confronted with a Latin<br />

document which he only imperfectly understood. Where the present text has &v-<br />

BpuTToi corresponding to the Latin 'innoxii', Eusebius must surely have written dOccoi,<br />

though the reading dvOpoiirot, is as early as the Syriac Version.<br />
