Where the remains of contemporary literature are so few and fragmentary,<br />

intervals far longer than half a century constantly occur<br />

between the producible instances of the use of particular words. One<br />

example will suffice. The Ignatian letter to the Ephesians on any<br />

showing was written before the middle of the third century when it is<br />

quoted by Origen. Yet the next example, after this Ignatian letter, of<br />

the use of the word dvaywyev in the same sense as 'a liftitig-engine''<br />

{Ephes. 9), which the lexicographers produce, is in Eustathius (see 11.<br />
