this account of Ignatius depends solely on the passage of Eusebius<br />

in which Irenaeus is quoted (see above, p. 156, 11. p. 378). If therefore<br />

he supposed the words to have been spoken at the time of the martyrdom,<br />

he has misinterpreted the el-rrev of Irenasus, which in itself would<br />

apply equally well to written as to spoken words, though here in accordance<br />

with the general usage of Irenaeus applied to the former ^<br />
