IT seems advisable, as a preliminary to the discussions relating to<br />

the priority and authenticity of the several Ignatian Epistles, to<br />

give the passages<br />

in ancient authors in which mention is made of<br />

Ignatius and his writings, or in which they are quoted directly or<br />

indirectly. This course is suggested for convenience of reference, and<br />

has been adopted by Ignatian editors generally. It is superfluous to<br />

acknowledge obligations to predecessors in this case, where the harvest<br />

has been already reaped and where at the utmost only the scantiest<br />
