patristic mss belonging to this Borgian collection, has been transferred<br />

to the Library of the Museo Nazionale at Naples, where I transcribed it.<br />

The portions of the Ignatian Epistles contained in it are (<br />

HoXvKapTTia irapiOifXTjv v'/tds to the end, followed by (2) Smyr7ucans<br />

from the beginning as far as § 6 •n-ctj/coi'Tos r/ Sm/'wvtos'. They are written<br />

on two loose leaves, or four continuous pages marked e, c, h. '^,<br />

The MS is a 4to with double columns, clearly written. The initial letters<br />

are occasionally very rudely illuminated and the «^'s are generally<br />

coloured. The marks over the n are capriciously inserted or omitted.<br />

Of the date I cannot venture to ex'press an opinion, where Zoega<br />

is<br />

silent. The four pages missing at the beginning,<br />

have contained the earlier part of the Epistle to Hero, and can hardly<br />

have contained anything else. The Epistle to the Smyrnaeans<br />

is distinctly<br />

numbered the second. Thus the epistles in this Thebaic ms<br />

were arranged in an order different from any which is found in the mss<br />

of other versions and recensions. The ms affords no clue for determining<br />

how many of the Ignatian Epistles<br />

For the present edition I have compared my own text with Ciasca's<br />

and corrected some errors. In other cases, where we differed, I have<br />

this version included.<br />

felt justified in adhering to my own reading as against his. For the<br />

last word which is mutilated in the ms, I read eqo&[e], where he has<br />

eqop['2s.]. My deciphering of the MS in this case agrees with the Greek<br />

Sn/'wvTos, and I have had no opportunity, since my transcript was<br />

made, of comparing it with the original.<br />

LONG FORM.<br />

Besides the original Greek of this recension, a Latin version<br />

exists, omitting however the letter of Mary to Ignatius. This Latin<br />

version was first printed together with the works of Dionysius the<br />

Areopagite by Faber J. Stapulensis, Tgnatii Undecim Epistole (Paris 1498).<br />

The letter of Mary of Cassobola to Ignatius did not appear in this<br />

edition. The twelve letters complete were published by Symphorianus<br />

Champerius (Colon. 1536). The editio princeps of the Greek is that of<br />

Moesinger {Suppl. Corp. Ign. p. 30) error is not explained by anything in the<br />

speaksof the Epistle to the' Antiochenes' passage of Cureton (C. /. p. 362 sq) to<br />

as existing in this Coptic version. His which he refers.
