lOO EPISTLES OF S. IGNATIUS.
in the Syriac KIajl:^,
which differently vocahsed signifies either
'counsel' or 'king,' and the second sense is
wrongly given to it.
(2)
The
rendering ' angeli regis (consilii),' common to both, would not be suggested
independently by the Greek. {3) In the Greek there is nothing
corresponding to the final r^LixAx..'^ r^* Sin^O^^ 'in forma apostolorum
' after the mention of the deacons. The explanation seems
to be that eis tvttov awedplov twv (iTroo-ToXwv was at first wrongly
translated ' in forma angelorum consilii ',
and the words ' in forma
apostolorum' were a correction perhaps written in the first instance
on the margin but afterwards inserted in the text, not in their right
place as a correction, but elsewhere as a substantive addition. The
Armenian translator has taken the whole passage as he found it in
his Syriac copy. In Magn. 6, 7, again some curious coincidences
appear. The preposition in TrpoKa6r]fxivu)v
is translated in Sj as before,
and so it
again becomes 'in capitibus vestris' in A. Moreover in
rendering rtSTros the word adopted in S, is K'tO.aj, which diff"erently
vocalised signifies either ' the form ' or ' the sight ',
and accordingly
the corresponding words to eh tvttov are ' in conspectum ' in A.
Again the words 7;i/w/a€Vos wv are omitted by both Sj and A. Again
the Syriac ^___^£a-i^ 0.&fiai:sa 'tentando tentate ' is
reproduced
in the Armenian, where the Greek has simply TreipdcrrjTe. Again loia
v{uv in S, is cnXo coU^ ^^_OAAJSa rtu .T-mA , literally ' uni uni
'
e vobis ab ipso et ad ipsum and in A
',
unusquisque e vobis a se ipso '.
In Tral/. 2, 3, likewise, SjA keep very close together. Thus both
render Kara avOpmirov
'
in corpore '. Again the reading of A, ' quando
creditis ortum ejus et mortem ',
for TriaTevo-avTcs eis t6v Odvarov avrov,
must be explained through the Syriac. S, has ^ii.sn^cru:n
.t^
coh\cssns ..^^o^rf following the Greek; but the Syriac
ms from
which A was ultimately derived must have had a corrupt reading
oo.'^\a=a 'his birth' for cn^osa 'his death', whence, owing
probably to a marginal correction, both words got into the text
which was used by A. Lower down S^A have ' presbyteris ' ('sacerdotibus
') for tw Trpeo-^uTeptw. Again S,
translates fxva-TrjpLwv by
