A warm welcome to all our fellow ‘Puzzlers’- Old & New. Lots of
goodies coming our way during this year. We are off to find
new & exciting ranges for you in the next two months and
have lots of new jigsaws coming in as we speak. If you have
a favourite manufacturer, please let us know and if it’s not a
current supplier we will endeavour to find them.

Dogs for the Disabled was started in 1986 by Frances Hay,
who had become disabled herself at the age of 16. Her
own dog had helped her to overcome some of her physical
problems, giving her welcome friendship, companionship
and independence. It was this special rapport that inspired
her to realise a dog could help disabled people in many
ways.
Sadly, Frances died in 1990, but the seeds had been sown
and Dogs for the Disabled went from strength to strength.
Imagine...
...You’ve dropped your keys; they are out of
reach and no one is around to help. It’s a
cold, wet day and all you want to do is get
home. Being in a wheelchair can stop you
doing even the simplest things; it can stop
you living your life.
...You are eleven years old; while friends are
always out playing football, you’re stuck at
home. Your mum even has to help you take
your coat off and it feels like life is standing still.
...Not being able to go anywhere as a family
as your child, who has autism, just cannot
cope with life outside. He finds lots of
environments too overwhelming and just
wants to run away.
Dogs for the Disabled is a life-transforming charity,
creating exceptional partnerships between people living
with disability and specially trained assistance dogs.
Through practical assistance, a dog can offer freedom and
independence to people who face a lifetime of challenge.
Each assistance dog is trained to undertake a range of
practical tasks including opening doors, retrieving dropped
or out of reach items, push access buttons outside shops
or bark on command to raise the alarm when more help is
needed. An assistance dog for autism supports the entire
family, acting as a continuous focus enabling the child to
remain calm in placed they may have previously found too
challenging.
However, partnership with an assistance dog offers far more
than just practical help. Disability can have a profound
effect on both the individual and their loved ones; many
experience feelings of isolation, loss of confidence and
lack of independence. An assistance dog becomes a social
icebreaker, a reason to go out, giving new found confidence
that opens doors to fresh opportunities including
friendships, hobbies, education and even careers.
The gift of independence is priceless – the cost of training
a dog is not.

Our Star Letter
Each month we receive many letters from our fellow
members, containing all sorts of information and
comments. We try to print as many as possible in our
monthly newsletter and our first choice letter writer
always receives a jigsaw gift. We’re grateful to you all for
your contributions and sorry if your letter didn’t make
it onto this section, but please keep them coming. Next
published letters could be you!
A Jigsaw Life.
Loss of a friend recently, very disabled and hardly away
from home, I really enjoy being a member and doing my
jigsaws. They keep me occupied, lift my spirits when down
keep brain & fingers active and stop my tongue being
so active too! As I love nostalgia and Xmas scenes, I get
plenty to choose from. Carers think I’m mad as everywhere
one looks there are jigsaws. Have about 60 at present
and have given the same number or more away when
I’ve completed them. Even contributed some to the local
lending library There is always something on the go. Of
course I can pick up and leave off when I need to and
people cannot resist having a go on a visit, which makes
me smile.
So thank you ‘Puzzle Club UK’ for supplying me with a
pastime I can call my own and gives me so much pleasure.
What did I do or manage before I knew you Happy five
years and many more to come.

We really appreciate receiving lovely letters like this and
knowing we can make a difference. We have enclosed the
latest Gibson catalogue with this newsletter and hope
you’ll find a suitable jigsaw for us to send you as a
thank-you for taking the time to write in.
I’m not disabled, or retired, and still in my early thirties
and despite being a very busy career woman, still find time
to unwind with a jigsaw of an evening and sometimes
weekends. My friends don’t understand this apparently’ crazy
obsession’ and I find it hard to explain the compulsion, so
I just ignore the comments and feel sorry for them really... If
anyone can explain the pleasure, obsession, desire, etc in a
few simple words, it would make my day.
ANONYMOUS.
We could probably list many words to explain, but we
thought it might act as a challenge to our Members to
come up with their thoughts! Watch this space.
We had a recent telephone call from a Charity shop
asking if all 1000pc jigsaws were actually - 1000pcs. The
Staff had been tasked to count the pieces in each jigsaw
before putting the puzzle on sale to ensure there were
no pieces missing. As the pile of rejects got bigger, the
store Manager got concerned and phoned to ask the
question… The answer is that not all 1000pc jigsaws are
exactly 1000pcs – could be 1008 (the NEW 32000pc is
actually 32526!)

Hi Puzzler friends…
Hope you have now all received the
Ravensburger jigsaws we featured in our
preview section last month. There was a delay
in them arriving, but as always Mick did a
champion job (with a little help) and all orders
should now be with you or on their way.
We are sending out the Gibson Catalogue with
this newsletter. EVERYTHING is available or should
be with us before the middle of the month.
Please ALLOW EXTRA TIME particularly if you are
ordering new items.
We endeavour to feature most sizes in our
newsletter, but we’ve had a few phone calls re:
pricing… Gibsons prices ALL 500-625-1000 pc
jigsaws will be the same price. The only exception
is Kinkade which are £2.00 extra each. We do put
our current price list in with all orders but if you
need any other info please call.
