Notes LNG of Shipping Interest Summary
US There LNG has Import been Outlook no spot Through charter activity July reported recently as the availability of
There vessel is has very all little but to dried report up with again. regards It is to suspected the status that of US there LNG are imports a few available as most flexible
cargoes vessels are for hire moving the everywhere Med region but that to aren’t US ports. visible. With However, the delta as between a result of US the and UK
pricing renewed maintaining tightness a the spread benchmark of over $1/mmbtu daily spot there charter are rate no incentives has moved to bring up from LNG to the
States, the exception being, of course, high liquids-content LNG at Lake Charles.
$40,000 per day last week to roughly $46,000 per day for a newer carrier with
cold tanks.
Our April Imports figures were adjusted slightly upwards from 37 bcf to the 40 bcf level
accounting for the addition of one tanker arrival at Elba Island according to the most
recent FERC data. Meanwhile one tanker arrival of 1.7 bcf that was reported in the April
FERC data at the Everett terminal is being questioned and has been omitted from the
Waterborne figures until it can be verified. Meanwhile our May import estimate of 31 bcf
remains unchanged.
Waterborne June LNG import estimates have increased slightly with the addition of one
Elba Island delivery bringing the total to 33 bcf. There is also information that Cove Point
could receive both a tanker from Norway and a Trinidad sourced cargo that would push
the figures up to the 36 bcf level, although with stronger netbacks in just about every other
LNG importing country in the Atlantic Basin this seems unlikely.
Surprisingly July estimates are still a bit stronger that previous months amid the prospects
of renewed global production after a series of planned and unplanned outages spanning
from Malaysia, Norway, Oman, Egypt, Qatar, Australia and Trinidad during the months of
April and May. Preliminary projections show potential import levels as high as 50 bcf.
Kuwait Samples the Globe for LNG
Since Kuwait’s 2010 import season began last March, the country has sourced cargoes
from seven different countries. This is a testament to the growing volume of uncommitted
supply which can basically be obtained from anywhere for a price. As mentioned in
previous reports, because of the high value of specialty or counter-seasonal markets such
as Kuwait where landed prices are linked to crude oil, margins are high for suppliers. This
provides a wide selection of supply sources to choose from as is evident from this year’s
imports. In May alone all five deliveries came from five different countries. These
countries include Oman, Belgium, Russia (Sakhalin Is.), Australia and Yemen. Soon to be
added to the list is an Equatorial Guinea delivery expected to arrive in mid June on the BG
tanker “Methane Lydon Volney”. This ex-ship delivery is believed to have been sold to
Vitol.
Kuwaiti LNG imports are expected to reach an impressive 104 bcf for the 2010 import
season which ends in October. Last year Kuwait imported 31 bcf although the new facility
only started operations in August.
Repsol’s vessel, the “Barcelona Knutsen” is currently in position to load her inaugural
cargo at the world’s newest liquefaction plant in Peru. The 4.45 mmtpa Peru LNG
production facility is expected to push out about five cargoes per month once the plant
has reached nameplate capacity. The first tanker shipment is expected to discharge at
Repsol’s Canaport terminal on the Northeast Coast of Canada.
Petrobras Pulls Cargo into Rio de Janeiro
Last week Waterborne erroneously reported the expected arrival of a tanker at the
Brazilian port of Pecem. Waterborne now believes that the second delivery into Brazil
this year will be delivered into the Rio de Janeiro terminal on the BG tanker “Seri
Bijaksana” in the next few days. The tanker loaded in Trinidad around the 25 th of May.
Qatari LNG Outages More Significant that Originally Thought
Reliable market sources have revealed that the widely reported three train outage in
Qatar that have occurred from March through May have been grossly understated and
various circumstances are likely to have played a role in further delays recently
announced on the two remaining mega-trains which are still under construction. In total
from late March through today as many as six trains are believed to have been affected
by planned and unplanned production interruptions across both RasGas and Qatargas
production complexes.
Three Qatargas trains are thought to have gone down over the past 9 weeks. The first,
Mega-Train Qatargas 2 Train 4, is thought to have been recently brought back on-line
after a one month planned maintenance program. The maintenance programs of two
more conventional sized trains are thought to have been moved forward as well with the
bulk of the outage time occurring during April and May. Meanwhile, three RasGas trains
are believed to have undergone maintenance since late March and consist of two Megatrains
and one conventional size train. It is important to note, however, that train
maintenance is common during the months of April and May, which are shoulder months
for most seasonal importing countries.
This information is being supported by the most recent findings in the “Waterborne Global
LNG Production Tracker” which shows a 41 bcf drop in Qatari LNG production from
March to April with preliminary figures revealing even further reductions in May. The next
edition of the production tracker will also reveal significant reductions in production in
Malaysia, Oman, Algeria, Egypt, and Australia during the month of April.
A recent increase in spot Asian demand for July and August deliveries has pulled spot
price ideas up to the $6.30/mmbtu level for the month and even higher in August. Taiwan
is playing a key role in the spot market this year amid the termination of a long-term
contract out of Indonesia combined with strong domestic demand. Taiwan’s CPC recently
released a spot tender for the purchase of 9 cargoes for delivery in July and August.
Taiwan’s spot presence in the market has been growing in recent months with a total of
four purchases for May and June deliveries.
Meanwhile Japanese and Korean utilities’ spot interest is also on the rise as buyers there
– who are experiencing a seemingly steady economic recovery - are finding LNG more
economical compared to petroleum products.
Vol. 7, Week 22
In last weeks issue of the US Waterborne LNG Report we reported that the Total
controlled tanker “Arctic Lady” was en-route to Sabine Pass. We have since learned
that somewhere in between the Northeast US and Florida the tanker was diverted to
Spain. Market intelligence is indicating that the port of Huelva will likely be her final
destination.
RasGas Charters Conventional Carriers for Added Flexibility
RasGas recently chartered in two conventional size carriers to add flexibility to its
existing operations, which include the “Trinity Glory” and the “Maersk Meridian”.
Currently RasGas has 13 Q-flex tankers and 1 Q-Max tanker in its fleet (most of
which are idle at this time) and which are dedicated to the new Mega-Train
production. These volumes were largely earmarked for regas terminals where Qatari
investments had been made although circumstances are now dictating that the option
to deliver volumes to terminals which are not compatible with the larger size tankers
may prove to be useful. Both tankers are thought to have been taken for up to a
year in 3 month incremental option periods. The suggested market charter rate for
the tankers is $30,000 to $31,000 per day.
KPC Tender for more August Deliveries
Kuwait Petroleum Corporation issued another spot supply tender for the delivery of
up to two cargoes during the month of August. Bids were to be submitted by May
28 th and remain valid until June 1 st . There is no word as of yet who may have won
the tender. This tender comes on the heels of KPC awarding a previous supply
tender for up to five cargoes per month during the period from April through October.
Shell and Vitol announced they had been awarded the combined volumes for a multiyear
contract. Market intelligence suggests that the award level was somewhere
close to 9-10% of Brent crude oil futures.
Methodology
The U.S. Waterborne LNG Report tracks the flow of LNG vessels that call on U.S. ports only. The report is
a rolling 5 month view of LNG imports. Some of the vessel information contained in this report is unconfirmed.
Some forward liftings are based on anticipated vessel rotations and market feedback. Current and forward vessel
schedules are considered incomplete data, and are subject to change. Any information contained in this report
may be modified at any time. The volumes are listed in cubic meters and billions of cubic feet (bcf). Volumes in
(bcf) account for a 2% loss of cargo in transit based on a 5 day voyage. Heat content is based on an average of
various port specifications. Historical information prior to June 2003 cited in the summary section of the U.S.
Waterborne LNG Report is sourced from the EIA. Import forecasts are formed by a compilation of
information from various sources and in-house expertise.
