Biostatistics: helping build the knowledge base
The reliability and validity of the data we collect in our laboratories, clinics and in the field is crucial to
the development and augmentation of knowledge in any area. The biostatistics department supports
all the research done at LVPEI in the clinics, laboratories and in the field. Mr S Krishnaiah, our lone
statistician, works closely with researchers to design sound studies, develops data gathering instruments
and forms, and then analyses the data using appropriate tests. Among other things, we were able to
establish the viability and efficacy of cultivated limbal epithelial transplantation using retrospective data
from 477 eyes (the largest series from a
single centre). Apart from assisting on
a variety of clinical and basic research
projects this year, Mr Krishnaiah also
helped design a follow-up to the landmark
Andhra Pradesh Eye Disease Study
(APEDS), which is planned to assess
the impact of interventions in the four
districts surveyed in the original study.
The initial feasibility study conducted in
collaboration with the London School
of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine has
indicated that close to 72% of the original
cohort is available to participate in the
follow-up study.
