and implement services in the manner and in
the areas they are most likely to be effective.
RARE provides a simple and effective method
to accurately assess visual acuity and collect
data on prevalence of refractive error without
reliance on a high level of technical expertise
or sophisticated equipment. This means that
RARE is possible even in the most remote and
under-resourced regions. The data collection
process can be completed in 8 to 10 weeks
even in heavily populated areas, and costs less
than USD 2500 for a population block. This
also means that it can be repeated with equal
ease, thus providing a measure of the impact of interventions over time. The global eye care community
has responded positively to RARE, and the ICARE team has already conducted one workshop in
Nepal, where the Tilganga Eye Hospital wishes to apply it as a planning tool in their refractive error
program.
