This is also important to us because the school community we experience today is a direct result of this encounter. We resume our story with St Eugene’s meeting with the Pope. In his private journal, Eugene jotted down his impressions of the morning, as he recalled them. JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS
WELCOME BACK TO ALL FAMILIES
I hope the Easter bunny visited your homes and by the looks of things,
he visited the 5J classroom over the holidays as well. Unfortunately he
forgot to leave and to the surprise of Mrs Jones and the boys in 5J he
was still there on Tuesday morning. Mrs Jones and her class are glad to
be back in their room which has now been cleaned thoroughly and are
ready for a term of good work.
TERM 2 SPORT
involved in either rugby, football or cross country, some wearing the
black and white for the first time. This week’s rugby and football trial is
against Ashgrove here at Iona and we will be opening up the canteens
next to Davine Oval and at the Football (soccer) fields. We would
greatly appreciate parent support to help man these canteens this week.
If you are able to help, even for a short time, could you please contact
Mrs Kerri Stariha on 3893 8805. Our home games for the Junior School
this term are on Saturday 3 May, 24 May and 14 June and your support
in assisting the Sports Supporters with the canteens will be greatly
appreciated.
there have been some date changes to the College Calendar.
On a personal note it was very impressive to see Iona College Year 5
student Bailey Kelleher performing the part of Louis Leonowens in the
Next Friday afternoon we will be taking the cross country team to the
possible to attend.
We will travel by bus to Villa Park straight from school and students are
required to find their own transport home on the completion of their
race. A bus will be returning to the college at about 5.00 pm for those
IONA SPORT….
”Good sport comes from anywhere”
Winter sport sees football, rugby, chess and cross country all thriving.
Our trial weekend against Ashgrove sets the standard for the winter
months and begins with the lower grade teams where ‘good sport
abounds’. We need to plough development and enjoyment into all our
teams so that our whole community benefits from the winter
involvement. All coaches, managers, referees, players and spectators
are to make the right decisions on and off the field throughout winter—
playing and supporting with the right moral compass will benefit our
community.
INTERHOUSE CROSS COUNTRY
The last day of Term 1 saw the initial part of interhouse cross country
being held. The races for Years 8 - 10 were held and the results are
below. TO BE COFIRMED: Years 11 and 12 races to be held in Week
4 of this term during house periods.
RUGBY
Our Harlequin squad completed a training camp at the Gold Coast.
Many thanks to Mr Turner, Mr Phillips and Mr McBride for making the
camp successful. The trial against St Laurences at the start of the
vacation was useful and the results are as follows:
1st XV won
16A won 17-5 16B lost 10-15
15A won 35-10 15B lost 14-19
14A won 25-15 14B won 20-15
13A won 35-10 13B won 55-0
FOOTBALL
It was also a good ‘hit out’ against St Laurences for the football teams
on April 5. Unfortunately St Laurences were too strong for us in all
games except for the 15As and 14 As.
SAILING
At the State Team Racing Championships held over Easter, the Iona
Black team gained second place behind Brisbane Grammar and our
White team placed 6th. Our team now moves onto the Nationals in
Sydney over the June/July break. A huge thank you to the following
people who assist tremendously with the sailing program:
Mr Gary Dutton
President
Mrs Sue von Richter
Secretary
Mr Ricketts and Mr French College staff
Mr Tim Robba
HIGH PERFORMANCE SPORT
Jack Skinner (Year 9) has just returned from the UK where he trialled
for Westham Football Club. He has been invited back for another six
week trial that will happen again sometime this year. This is
outstanding and we wish Jack all the best for his coming year of
football.
IONA SPORTS SUPPORTERS
The winter seasons are the biggest for the Iona Sports Supporters. It
takes lots of hands on deck to ensure we provide the quality hospitality
Iona is known for. We are now looking for a person or group that can
assist in convening and operating the canteens for both CIC and AIC
Football. The goods are purchased by the Sports Supporters, we need
the manpower! If you are able to assist please contact either Mrs Sue
Carroll or Mrs Kerri Stariha at the College. Without parental help, the
football (soccer) canteens will not open.
