ATTACHMENTS: 1. 2012 Club Volunteer award nominee report (Confidential) 2. 2012 Community Volunteer award nominee report (Confidential) 3. 2012 Access and Inclusion 'Caring in our community' award nominee report (Confidential) COUNCIL DECISION: (COMMITTEE AND ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDATION) Moved by Cr Langer, seconded by Cr Walker That:- (i) the 2012 Club Volunteer Award be awarded to Nominee 1 and an amount of $500 be presented at the Town's volunteer function on Tuesday, 25 September 2012; (ii) (iii) the 2012 Community Volunteer Award be awarded to Nominee 2 and an amount of $500 be presented at the Town's volunteer function on Tuesday, 25 September 2012; the Access and Inclusion 'Caring in our Community' award be reviewed due to receiving only one nomination that did not fit the criteria. The aim of the review will be to increase the profile of the awards in the community and ensure its relevance to local community groups and businesses. COUNCIL MINUTES TUESDAY 28 AUGUST 2012 CR12.121 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE AND COMMONWEALTH GAMES - EVENT CELEBRATIONS PURPOSE OF REPORT: To update Council in relation to the 50 th anniversary celebration event of the British Empire and Commonwealth Games, including a community event. BACKGROUND: A report was presented to Council in May 2012 (CR12.61) pertaining to an opportunity existing for the Town to undertake a number of activities to celebrate the 50 th Anniversary of the British Empire and Commonwealth Games which took place in Perth in 1962. It was identified that the activities could be joint ventures between relevant stakeholders. Council decided that "an amount of up to $25,000 be included in the 2012/2013 Draft Budget subject to matching funds being provided by the relevant State Government agencies". DETAILS: Since June 2012, the Town has met with key stakeholders including the Western Australia Olympic and Commonwealth Games Council, Athletics WA and the Department of Sport and Recreation WA all of whom have indicated their support for the event. The Town has also liaised with the WA Sports Federation, Cities of Vincent and Perth and the West Australian Institute of Sport. In relation to funding, the Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR) and Landcorp have committed $10,000 each towards the event. The Town, Athletics WA, the Western Australian Olympic Committee and DSR have formed a working group and propose a number of activities to celebrate the 50 th anniversary. These activities will be joint ventures and will culminate in a major community event on Friday, 23 November 2012 at the West Australian Athletics Stadium. The original date was proposed for Saturday, 24 November, however, the evening of Friday, 23 November has been decided as the most appropriate date as it coincides with an Athletics WA meet so a captive audience will already be in attendance. Proposed activities will include the following: • Display of 1962 Commonwealth Games memorabilia including CHOGM display panels - to be displayed in October/November at the Library and at Floreat Forum and at the WA Athletics Stadium on the evening of the event; • Living Treasures/Local Heroes - oral histories of athletes, host families, volunteers, businesses or any groups/individuals who were involved in the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games. To feature in pre event media, at the Cambridge Library and at the Community event; • Local Schools project - schools to be invited to colour in flags in October 2012 which would be displayed at the community event; • A community event - to take place at the new Athletics Stadium and to include some athletic events, 'come and try' activities for non-athletes, old fashioned games, guest H:\CEO\GOV\COUNCIL MINUTES\12 MINUTES\AUGUST 2012\C CR.DOCX 136
