ROBERT HOLL, BASS
After completing his studies with Jan Veth and David
Hollestelle in Rotterdam, Robert Holl won the first prize at
the International Vocalists’ Contest in Den Bosch in 1971.
Furthermore, he studied with Hans Hotter in Munich,
where he won the first prize at the international ARD Contest
in 1972. Since then, he has built up an impressive
career as a concert, opera and Lieder singer. His preference
lies with the German Lied repertoire. He is considered
one of the greatest Lieder singers of his generation,
shedding light on new aspects of the art. Robert Holl has
worked with eminent orchestras, including the Royal Concertgebouw
Orchestra, the Wiener Philharmoniker and the Berliner Philharmoniker,
working with such conductors as Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Chailly,
Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Herbert von Karajan and Kurt Masur. Robert Holl
received the honorary title of Kammersänger from the city of Vienna in 1990.
He regularly takes part in the Wiener Festwochen and the Salzburger Festspiele.
In 1997, Robert Holl was awarded the Elly Ameling-Ring for his outstanding
artistry. In that same year he became a Professor solo singing and
music-dramatic expression at the Hochschule für Musik und darstellende
Kunst in Vienna.
RUDOLF JANSEN, PIANO
Rudolf Jansen was born in Arnhem (the Netherlands). He
studied piano, organ and harpsichord simultaneously at
the Amsterdams Conservatorium with Nelly Wagenaar, his
father Simon C. Jansen and Gustav Leonhardt. In 1964 he
won the Prix d’Excellence for organ, in 1966 the Prix for
piano. He later graduated as an accompanist with Felix de
Nobel. In 1965 he won the Toonkunst Jubileumprijs and in
1966 the Friends of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw
awarded him with the Zilveren Vriendenkrans. In addition
to his solo career Rudolf Jansen has concentrated more
and more on Lied-accompaniment and chamber music.
Concert tours took him all over the world to the main halls
of prominent cities and the famous Music-Festivals, together with artists of
great reputation: Elly Ameling, Robert Holl, Andreas Schmidt, Olaf Bär, Christiane
Oelze, Barbara Bonney, Hans-Peter Blochwitz, Monica Groop, Tom
Krause, Edith Wiens, Birgit Finnilä, Irina Arkhipova, Brigitte Fassbänder and
Jean-Pierre Rampal. Rudolf Jansen regularly gives master classes for
singers and accompanists in, among others, the Netherlands, Austria, Great
Britain, Germany, Russia, Danmark, Italy, the United States, Canada and
Japan. In November 1996 he was invited by the Juilliard School of Music to
give a master class in New York.
ELLY AMELING, SOPRANO
Elly Ameling is beloved and admired throughout the world
for ther splendid and expressive voice and her compelling
artistry. Her 1995/96 farewell tour marked a milestone in a
remarkable artistic career. After her professional début as
a concert singer in Rotterdam in 1953, she performed for
more than 40 years in virtually every major culture centre
in the world. Her frequent appearances with the leading
international orchestras (Haitink, Britten, Ozawa, Sawallisch
among her conductors) have established her as one
of the greatest singers of our age. She has regularly sung at the Aix-en-
Provence, Edinburgh, Aldeburgh, Bergen and Tanglewood Festivals, to mention
only a few. She has sung in opera, notably Mozart, but Art song is her
speciality. In her recitals she showed to future generations the brilliant values
of German Lied and French mélodie. This dedication to a highly individual art
form has resulted in the production of countless LPs and CDs, many of which
are regularly being re-issued. Elly Ameling is in great demand throughout the
world for her masterclasses for singers and their pianists, during which they
benefit from her knowledge and the wealth of her practical insight. Dr. Ameling
has been awarded four honorary degrees and has been knighted by Her
Majesty the Queen of the Netherlands for her services to music.
