RALEIGH—Being in a hurry paid off for Walter Harris. The Raleigh man says he normally picks his own
numbers when he buys a “Carolina Cash 5” ticket but on Sunday decided to buy a quick-pick ticket to
save time. Later that night, the computer generated ticket he’d bought for the Oct. 4 “Carolina Cash 5”
ticket drawing matched all five numbers to win the $335,903 top prize ($228,414.36 after taxes).
Harris bought his winning ticket at Capital Mart on Capital Boulevard in Raleigh. He says some of his
winnings will go to his church and family, and that he also will probably use some of his winnings to take
a trip.
Killing time before his bank opened Friday morning, Wesley Green of Gaffney, South Carolina says he
went across the street to the Campus Store #146 on North Main Street in Boiling Springs to get a drink
and decided to buy a “Wooooooo!” instant scratch-off ticket since it was new. As he scratched it off, he
says he thought he’d won $10,000 but then realized there were a few more zeros.
Green had the ticket scanned because he thought it might be a misprint, but it wasn’t—his ticket was
worth $100,000 ($68,001.60 after taxes)! Green says he will take a vacation with some of his winnings.
Jesus Lugo of Carthage was passing through Goldsboro when he decided to stop at the JP Goldsboro
on East Ashe Street to buy a few lottery tickets. He randomly picked the “Mega Bucks” instant scratch-off
ticket and was surprised when it revealed the top prize of $100,000 ($68,001.60 after taxes). Lugo says
he plans to put his winnings in the bank.
In the Saturday, Oct. 3 Powerball drawing, three tickets matched four out of five white balls plus the
Powerball. One of the three tickets was Power Played and is worth $30,000 since the Power Play
multiplier was three. This ticket was sold at Handy Stop on Rock Barn Road in Conover.
The other two tickets that matched four out of five white balls plus the Powerball were not Power Played
and are worth $10,000 each. They were sold at Catamount Travel Center on Highway 441 North in
Whittier and Kangaroo Express on Capital Boulevard in Raleigh.

A total of 67,838 North Carolina Powerball players won prizes in the Saturday, Oct. 3 Powerball drawing
ranging from $30,000 to $3 for a total payout in prizes worth $506,287. One ticket in Florida matched all
five white balls plus the Powerball to win the jackpot, so the jackpot for the Wednesday, Oct. 7 Powerball
drawing is an estimated $20 million.
The North Carolina Education Lottery (NCEL) has paid out more than $5.6 million total in instant scratchoff
ticket prizes since Thursday, Oct. 1. Also since Thursday, “Carolina Pick 3” players have won more
than $1.1 million. “Carolina Pick 4” players have won more than $310,000 and 21 tickets won the top
prize of $5,000. “Carolina Cash 5” players have won more than $522,342.
