Hersey Orchesis Philosophy:
It is our mission to provide each dancer with a
well-rounded, healthy performance and rehearsal
experience. Orchesis exposes dancers to the following areas
of concentration: teamwork, individual and group goals, time
management, dance and performance technique,
commitment, rehearsal and performance etiquette, selfconfidence,
dance as an art, and being held accountable for
the choices one makes.
Orchesis views the performance experience as a
training tool by exposing each dancer to a variety of different
dance styles, organizations, events, and levels of
accomplishment gained through both individual and group
dedication and effort. Each performance is merely to
educate our dancers to other schools, companies, and
organizations available while motivating the dancer to strive
for individual and group goals, appreciation, and
achievement.
About Orchesis:
Our director, Jennifer Foss, graduated from
Columbia College Chicago with a B.A. in Dance. She
earned her Physical Education teaching certificate at
Northern Illinois University. Her graduate level work focuses
on Curriculum and Pedagogy. She has been teaching
dance for 9 years and also supervises a recreational dance
program. This is her second year directing the Hersey Dance
Program.
Orchesis strives to expose the community to the
art of dance, while at the same time giving our dancers a
chance to grow and gain experience. Last year, along with
hosting our annual show on February 24, 25, and 26 and our
winter show for Hersey Students, our members were able to
perform at Navy Pier’s Winter Wonder Fest, local schools on
our 8 th grade bus tour and at senior citizen homes on
Hersey’s annual Valentine’s Day Love Bus. In addition, our
dancers were given the opportunity to take master classes
and work with guest artists from around the Chicago land
area as well as attend the district’s Artist in Residence
Program. This year a concert will be added on January 11,
2012 that will include the entire Hersey Dance Program with
the hopes of spreading an appreciation for movement
throughout the school. All of this is made possible by the
support of the community at events such as our car wash,
bake sale, and Huskie Dance Workshop.

JHHS Orchesis invites children from
ages 4 to 14 years to participate in an
afternoon workshop and then perform in
a recital with the JHHS Orchesis
Company later that evening.
This Children’s Huskie Dance Workshop:
1. Allows dancers to perform and
reach the community on a
broader level.
2. Exposes youth to dance at John
Hersey High School and in our
community.
WHEN: October 22, 2011
CHECK IN: 3:10pm in the lobby
WORKSHOP: 3:30-6:00pm
OPTIONAL PIZZA PARTY: 6:00-6:40pm
COST: $25 (Fee includes 1 evening
performance ticket, 1 t-shirt, 1 certificate,
and 1 goody bag)
ADDITIONAL COST: $5 for pizza dinner
PERFORMANCE: 7:00pm
WHERE: John Hersey HS East Gym
Receive 1 admission ticket with registration
and additional tickets are $5.00 to be
purchased at the doors.
Performance Information:
Parents may elect to have their children
stay between the workshop and
performance for an additional $5.00 charge
which includes pizza and drink. Children
that are leaving for dinner are to be picked
up at 6:00pm and returned at 6:40pm.
There will be NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY
ALLOWED. VIDEOTAPING IS
PERMITTED IN THE LAST 2 ROWS OF
THE BLEACHERS.
WORKSHOP CLASSES OFFERED
3:30-6:00PM
CLASS SIZES ARE LIMITED
LITTLE BITTY DANCERS- (grades pre-k to k)
Class focuses on creative movement for young
children. Dancers use movement and action to make
a story come to life.
BALLET- (grades 1-3) Training enables the dancer
to gain strength, balance, and dexterity.
MUSICAL THEATER- (grades 4-8) Dancers learn
styles of dance featured in musical numbers.
Attention is focused on acting, dance, and musicality
combined.
BOYS- (grades k-3 or 4-8) Special class designed to
encourage and inspire. This will be taught by our
male dancers.
LYRICAL- (grades k-3 or 4-8) Fluid form of
movement that focuses on jazz, ballet, and
contemporary styles, often interpretive of lyrics.
CONTEMPORARY- (grades 4-8) Dancers will
work on creating new movement, balancing lifts, and
moving in and out of sharing weight with a partner or
a group. Dancers are to dance barefoot.
JAZZ AND HIP HOP- (grades 3-5 or 6-8) Dance
style commonly seen in the entertainment and
commercial industries. It involves sudden and rapid
isolated movements while challenging the dancer
rhythmically.
