THE WORK OF
AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL
Founded in 1961, Amnesty International’s mission is to give
a voice to the oppressed, defend the rights of the vulnerable,
and stand up for the human rights of children, women and
men everywhere.
Inspired by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, we
work to ensure the same human rights apply to all people,
equally. As the world’s leading human rights movement, we
were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of the
relief our supporters have brought to the marginalised,
victimised and abused. For half a century we have been
achieving justice and freedom for thousands of people across
the globe.
We are also an independent organisation- following no
particular political system or religion, and accepting no
government funding for our work so we can be free to
criticise the actions or inactions of governments. All our work
is funded by people like you, unified with determination to
stand up for freedom and liberate people from injustice.
