<strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Fitting</strong><br />
Working Conditions<br />
<strong>Austal</strong> <strong>Ships</strong>’ Apprentices are employed under an Employee Collective Agreement<br />
(ECA) and are required to work a 40 hour week, with a choice of roster pattern.<br />
Some overtime may be required depending on the deadlines and targets that you<br />
are expected to achieve during your apprenticeship.<br />
<strong>Austal</strong> <strong>Ships</strong> has clean, safe construction halls that you would be required to work<br />
within and all potential employees must be committed and focused on safety.<br />
This means that you are required to abide by the safety policies and procedures<br />
including wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).<br />
To succeed in this trade, you need to demonstrate the following<br />
characteristics and skills:<br />
> Good hearing and eyesight.<br />
> Manual dexterity.<br />
> Mechanical aptitude and interest.<br />
> Ability to work as a part of a team.<br />
> Desire to keep up-to-date with changing technology.<br />
> Keenness to use tools and equipment to perform tasks requiring precision.<br />
> Ability to solve problems.<br />
> Ability to follow routine procedures.<br />
> Strength and stamina to work with heavy tools and materials.<br />
Pre-requisites<br />
To gain an apprenticeship in <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Fitting</strong> you are required to have one or more of<br />
the following pre-requisites:<br />
> Year 10 - Level 4 or higher in English, Maths, Science and Design and<br />
Technology.<br />
> Year 11/12 - Level 4 in English and C grade in Maths and Science.<br />
> Previous work experience in the mechanical area.<br />
> Demonstrated interest in the mechanical area.<br />

To gain an apprenticeship in Aluminium Fabricating & Welding you are required to<br />
have one or more of the following pre-requisites:<br />
> Year 10 - Level 4 or higher in metalwork and/or woodwork subjects.<br />
> Previous work experience in the metals industry.<br />
> Basic skills in maths and technical drawing/design units.<br />
> Demonstrated interest in the metal fabrication/welding area.<br />
