Support for the Maternal Child & Family Care Unit Full Speed Ahead Ben’s roller coaster is a hit with the patients, visitors & staff At only 10 years old, Ben Kruck has a promising future as an engineer and philanthropist! Ben built an extreme roller coaster called the "Vertical Vengeance" using K'NEX Building Sets. The battery operated roller coaster includes screaming sounds and stands over 4ft tall. In October, Ben donated the roller coaster to the Paediatric playroom for the young patients to enjoy. Ben’s sister, Georgia, also donated a Fairy Treehouse to the playroom. Gliding into Parenthood New parents across the region will benefit from the generosity of the St. Columba Anglican Women who donated $500 toward the purchase of a beautiful Glider Rocker for the MCFC. The glider is what every new parent needs for a soothing and peaceful bonding experience while they are in the hospital. Concert Hits a High Note The Young Singers of Canada were thrilled to donate proceeds from their summer concert totaling over $1,000. With over 80 members, it is clear that this talented group has a passion for music and philanthropy. To date, nearly $470,000 has been raised through the Magic n' Miracles Christmas Magic Show, an eagerly-awaited annual event that inspires our community to help young patients at the SCGH. Proceeds from the 2007 Christmas Magic Show totaled over $18,000 and was used to purchase a state-of-the-art Infant Transport Isolette for the Special Care Nursery. The St. Catharines Professional Fire Fighter's have been voluntarily raising funds for our hospital for 21 years. We are truly grateful for their on-going support! Page 4 | Winter 2009 | www.scghfoundation.com 'Sweet' Victory for Paeds Like most kids, Bailie Knox, Christina Ford and Emily Mohring enjoy putting on a good lemonade stand. But with the help of their community, the three found there could be even sweeter rewards if they helped out a good cause. The three girls spent the last days of summer vacation selling lemonade with their Thorold neighborhood supporting the idea with generous donations and words of encouragement. The girls hard-earned proceeds enabled the purchase of a DVD player, several packages of crayons, pencils, colouring books and a bowling set for the Paediatric Department. When Ethan Girard invited guests to his 7th birthday party he made an unusual request for someone his age. Ethan asked friends and family to donate gifts to the young patients at the SCG rather than buying birthday gifts for him. Ethan is no stranger to the needs of our hospital. His mom, Vera Girard is a Resource Nurse in the Emergency Department at the SCG and hospital needs are often discussed at the Girard household. Ethan and his sister Alexandra, were happy to strike a pose! D.M. Spreads Holiday Cheer Armed with tape, scissors and festive décor, students from Denis Morris created holiday magic throughout the Paediatric Department. The visit helped to bring smiles to the patients, visitors and staff at the SCG and we would like to thank Denis Morris for inspiring the spirit of the season. A Little Magic Goes a Long Way! Guests enjoyed tasty food & beverages, special gifts and prizes. We were thrilled that the "Kleenex Cottonelle Puppy" made an appearance and encouraged our guests to support this great cause. Lions Support Local Services In November the Lions Eye Care Niagara Inc., which includes members from Beamsville, Stamford (Niagara Falls), St. Catharines and Jordan, generously donated $47,000 to purchase a DSAEK Instrument Set for the O.S.S. This new equipment boasts greater efficiency with less trauma and rapid healing time for corneal transplant patients. We thank the members of the Lions Eye Care Niagara Inc. for providing our local community with access to a state-ofthe-art procedure in Niagara. The Alumni's most recent donation enabled the purchase of a Portable Spirometer for the Respirology Department. This equipment is the most commonly used respiratory function test for assessing respiratory disease. The Association also donated a Dialysis Chair for effortless patient positioning and ultimate comfort. Thank you to our long time friends for their continued support. Treasurer), Kathy Burtch (Mack Alumni Assoc., Director) Art Donations Beautify SCG Georgina Finch recently donated 24 Trisha Romance Limited Edition Prints in memory of her father Walter N. Bradley, a life-long resident of St. Catharines. Georgina's collection is prominently displayed throughout the SCG and has made patients and visitors feel welcome. As a local artist, Trisha Romance has played an important role in our community's expression of pride. We are grateful to Georgina for this generous donation and for creating a more comforting environment for those in the hospital. Georgina Finch & Jean Bradley DVD Systems Help Patients In October, Larry & June Zehr delivered 15 portable DVD Players and an assortment of DVDs for the Outpatient Oncology Unit at the SCG site. This donation was made in memory of June's parents, Eva & George Jedicki. Thank you for your support! Co-operative students Sal Alajek and Mike Merpaw were happy to organize, cook and serve their co-workers at a BBQ this summer. Hair-raising Success After a decade of industry leading service, Renaissance Salon and Estetica hosted a grand re-opening celebration in October. Guests enjoyed an exquisite afternoon of cocktails and hors d'oeuvres while touring the newly renovated salon, located on Ontario Street in St. Catharines. The day concluded with a charity auction with proceeds totaling $4,500 toward Outpatient Oncology.
